This is not a total turn off for me, but I always side-eye "clean" beauty. There's no legal definition for it, and the term mostly means that they don't use as many preservatives. I won't buy expensive "clean" products because they tend to go off really quickly.
@simplythebestgirl
@simplythebestgirl Год назад
Exactly! The fewer preservatives concerns me. The products can go bad faster. Not all preservatives are bad.
@demitri1011
@demitri1011 Год назад
In fact because some clean beauty products claim to avoid some effective and perhaps safer preservatives, they actually use higher concentration for weaker ones. The tradeoff doesn't worth it
@caityjayde96
@caityjayde96 Год назад
A lot of brands also use "clean" to mean natural and promote it as being better for the skin, but sometimes natural ingredients are the ones that people are more likely to have allergic reactions to. For example, I can't use argan, avocado, or aloe vera, and I have to be careful about using rosemary, but they're all natural ingredients that are pretty commonly used in beauty products (to be fair, they can all have skincare benefits if you don't react to them). I can, however, use a bucketload of tea tree oil and be fine, even though it's a fairly common irritant for a lot of other people, and it is also a natural ingredient.

Red flag for me: not just huge palettes, but palettes with chaotic layouts (see: any of the ABH Norvina palettes, which are positively Lovecraftian). I need the colors to be presented in a sensible way; I want the color story to make sense. If there's nowhere for my eyes to rest I'll just move on.

I've found that since branching out into Asian beauty, the "clean" no makeup/makeup brands with high price tags are red flags for me now because that look can easily be recreated with k- or j-beauty. So brands like Glossier, Tower28, or any lip focused brand I know I can get better, cheaper products off Yesstyle. Edit: same with skincare. No reason to shop on sephora for skincare, especially since some brands like Laneige and Dr Jart are far cheaper on yesstyle

My biggest red flag is when a high end brand tries to justify cheap cardboard packaging at premium prices under the "environmentaly friendly" banner. There are plenty of biodegradable plastic options out there that would provide a more sophisticated finish, plus they could always make refillable components if they actually cared about waste production. ZARA is a great example of this and their beauty items are certainly inexpensive
@Kayla_P99

@emilyfriedlander3992
@emilyfriedlander3992 Год назад
I agree that brands should use more eco-friendly practices without significantly sacrificing user experience. I personally Ike cardboard packaging if its thick and sturdy but thats just me. Thought you might be interested to know that biodegradable plastics are better than regular plastic but still not that great. Unless in they're disposed of in their perfect environment, they can still take 100s of years to decompose. Its better than the 1000s that other plastics take but I side eye companies who rely on biodegradable plastics to give them a good image. If they're not changing anything else it just seems like greenwashing to me
@jklroxmysox111
@jklroxmysox111 Год назад
Even better than biodegradable plastic (because most of it isn’t *actually* biodegradable under average landfill conditions) would be to use glass. It’s weighted and luxurious and is usually fully recyclable. Even if it gets thrown away and ends up in a landfill, it won’t leech anything like plastic will.

@@denisuuhdzz616 if it was the avatar one I have the theory the IP was excessively expensive and they had to use cardboard to offset the cost 😂 I think that’s been their most expensive collection so far, nearing Sephora prices. I agree with “lock in place” products, especially as those 89-hour lasting, super waterproof crazy glue level items are often loaded with PFAs and some of the worst ingredients for our skin and environment. On the other side of the scale, products advertised as “clean” or “natural” are also a red flag for me because those labels don’t mean anything and can be just as (if not more) irritating as botanicals are more complex than synthetic counterparts so “clean”/natural products are not necessarily safer, less irritating or “better”. It’s not like I never buy these products, but I don’t buy into them and I’m often buying them DESPITE those claims if that makes sense. Like I’ll read the ingredient deck and decide for myself.

Me thinking about that new CP palette when you talked about big palettes lol And then you show it 😂 I have the It’s a Mood and Smoke N Roses mega palettes, and otherwise I don’t like mega palettes. But that Aurora color story… yes please! I literally asked CP to do this kind of color story one day when they asked randomly what customers would like to see in their IG stories lol I actually know I don’t have most of those shades, because I don’t have many cool toned palettes, so I’m excited 💚💙💜 I’ve fallen in love with cool tones in the past year. And I do like CP blotted lips, glossy lip stains, and the velvet liquid lips… so I disagree with that one 😅

My BIGGEST red 🚩 is when the palette is marketed as a colorful palette but it’s mostly browns or neutrals and 1-3 “colorful” shades. It’ll be like one random purple, green, yellow, blue shadow…I hate that!! I LOVE yellow eyeshadow and I’ve been searching for an exclusively yellow palette and it makes me just want to make my own palettes😂 if I had a makeup brand I’d probably come out with color themed palettes and make them one color specific with 8-12 shades that range from the light- dark & warm -cool tones of the color

enjoying your vlogmas so far Lauren. and your fragrance channel content too! also: I was very against tik tok for a long time. finally joined this year and it's actually great. lots of professionals (across all industries) have gravitated to tik tok to share information. makeup is included in this of course. and the videos can be up to 3 min long now 😊

Great video! I am just unwinding from work and was so happy to see this new video from you! I agree totally with your first 2 “red flags”: the huge palettes (which I admit to owning quite a few) and the long lasting products like the lip products. I tried one of those years ago because my sister thought it was the best thing. I could not stand the way my lips felt and I had to get it off asap! Btw, your eye look is amazing! Subtlety dramatic. 🤗

Aging myself here, but I remember color pH lip products being around in 1998! They were bullet lipstick shaped balms that came in green, orange, & yellow, and they supposedly adjusted to your perfect pink or berry. They are nothing new or innovative.

I agree with most of the comments here about "clean" beauty. Also, I remember a big boom when foundation and mascara companies were hitting hard with super longwear claims like 24 to 48 hours of wear...like that's not good to keep makeup on for nearly two days lol. Also, we all know it's not capable of lasting and looking flawless for that long.

It annoys me that "pH" makeup products claim that they adjust to your skin tone, when they really just blend into a beige colour. If a dark skinned person tries pH foundation, it's going to make them look grey or give a strange white cast.

I agree with everything except the subscription boxes. It's given me the opportunity to try products & colors that I would have never bought on my own. My favorite part is getting to try expensive skin care products. I didn't know there was a difference between lipstick, lip oil, lip gloss, etc. I didn't know you were supposed to put primer on your eyelids. I had never heard of warm or cool tones. Learning all of that lead me to watch makeup tutorials, which lead me to research various products, which lead me to knowing what type of makeup is worth investing in. Plus, when your life is devoted to taking care of other people, it's a nice little treat just for me!

Sorry for the comment spam. The ONLY color changing product I ever actually liked was part of the Bésame Sleeping Beauty Collab. It was a blue lipstick that would change to pink on the lips. Which was super cute considering the theme. Other then that, meh. Also the lipstick queen green lipstick/blush always left a green cast and I will die on that hill. I know it’s not as popular as it used to be, especially among young people, but any product from a Makeup Counter is an immediate red flag 🚩 most of the products are old as hell (and overpriced) so please do not overspend on expired makeup Maybe someone can give me a good recommendation but any eyeliner that is retractable and not a pencil is a red flag. Besides being unhygienic for makeup artists, I find they usually work worse, and break more 🚩

So at first, what I thought you meant with beauty box sub brands were the ones created by those boxes like ipsy and their complex culture or when boxy charm had their own palette in a box. The product isn't necessarily bad buuuut they can assign any value they want to it. Is this really a $50 brush? No probably not but it looks great for the value of the box and it makes me side eye the brand and the box quite a bit

For me glowing lip and blotted lip are the best CP lip products. Of course I’ve only tried the lippie sticks and the bullet lipsticks which are both adequate. Definitely wanted to try their other lip products after liking them.

Colourpop does have good lippies, I don’t know what she’s on but maybe she had a couple of bad experiences. Their So Glassy lip glosses are amazing, so is their Blotted lip and the Fresh Kiss lip lacquer. I’ve had a couple of their bullet lipsticks in the past and I liked those too, they’re just as good as the bigger brands.

I loved this video! People forget (probably because they are younger, probably the GEN Z crowd) that a lot of the products that are going "viral" or considered "must haves" or "innovative" are literally products that have been around for years but some company decided to copy it and capitalize off of that. I think a lot of this has to do with the GEN Z obsession with the 90s-early 2000s fashion coming back, so you are gonna see Black Honey being the IT product, mood changing/color changing products, body glitter, hair glitter, MFBB looks etc. At the risk of sounding patronizing/old (LOL) I just think it's super novel to them because they didn't grow up during that time or were just getting to the age to appreciate it before it went out of style.

I personally think that the ONE argument for beauty blender's zillion colors/patterns of their sponges is for people who want a sponge to suit their personal tastes. A favorite color, your zodiac, a pretty pattern to match your bathroom, HOWEVER other than that I personally dont see any other justifiable reason
