Making a Bent Lamination Chair / Full Build

A video of making a bent lamination chair. I saw a lot of similar design in metal and decided to try and make one in wood. I started by making a mould for back rest and and seat. I made it from some leftover osb, and plywood as shown in the video. Bottom part of the mould is rigid and keeps it's shape while the top part of the mould is more malleable. I used 5 layers of 1.5mm thin mahogany veneer for the seat and back rest. Glue I used for this part of the project is ordinary vinyl acetate d3 glue. Second part was making mould for the chair structure. I shaped the inner mould from 10x10cm leftovers and fixed it to the plywood board which served as a base. Same mould is used for the legs and arm rests. I cut 2 and 3 mm strips of spruce and sanded them down to final 1.5 and 2.5 mm thickness. Thinner strips are placed as the outer layers of lamination while thicker strips are placed in the center. Thinner strips can withstand sharper bending and protect thicker core from braking. Glue moisturizes them and also helps with bending. For this purpose I use two component melamine glue with long open time of 45 minutes. It takes some time to Spread the glue on so many layers so longer open work time is critical. After drying, I shaped the pieces to final form with power tools, everything is sanded with varying degrees of sandpaper and finally assembled. To join an armrest to the legs part of the chair I used 16mm beech pegs and acetate glue. To join the back rest and the seat to the chair I used decorative screws.
I really hope you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe! :D

You use such a wild mix of these massive industrial machines, and handheld jobsite power tools, to build your pieces. I could approximate most of the techniques you use, but not all of them. ... and then there's the robots
@lignumchannel
@lignumchannel 4 года назад
Every once in a while I try to use simplest tools as possible.. This one is quite simple to recreate and some of my industrial tools are not necessary, 1.5mm spruce veneer is not that uncommon and before I got the machine I always used that..

Talk about big toys. That jigsaw was the biggest motor and blade I've ever seen (on a jigsaw). The reciprocating saw to cut multiple veneers simultaneously is a magnificent. The chair turned out well. It's not just the craftsmanship, I really get a lot out of you demonstrating your creative talent too. Thanks for the video. Cheers, David.

dobar dan. very interesting. Maybe you should consider that strengthwise, wood is the ultimate carbon fiber lengthwise and can take silch across. Croatian design have for the last twenty years gone pompeus like some other european contries, with sofaes filling up the whole room, etc. At the same time your potential customers are moving in to smaller and smaller appartments. Interesting choice of wood though. With the amount of hrast being cut every year and not enough replanting to sustaint it. We will all have to get used to fast growing poplar.

Very nice! Question: I don't see how you're over coming the racking forces. Can you elaborate or is this more of a show piece and not really meant to be used?
@theodurbin8672
@theodurbin8672 4 года назад
The seat and back panels resist racking. But the only thing that seems to prevent twist (from left to right) is the fact that it's a chair, which normally sits on a floor (which is presumably flat) when loaded. But if this needs to be shipped, I suppose it would be disassembled anyway.
@lignumchannel
@lignumchannel 4 года назад
You are right.. The seat and back keep everything in place.. As with most of my projects, details are decided along the way and I wasn't sure if some additional reinforcements would be necessary until it was complete, but it turned out it was strong enough as is..

@@lignumchannel Alvar Aalto pioneered bent lamination back in the 1920's, look up some of his furniture; the dimensions are really quite small, and the wood handles the forces with no problems. They have some flex, but it mostly adds to the comfort of the chairs. His "Armchair 42" especially has very similar design to yours.
