Making a BIG Hydraulic Cylinder Rod & Eye | Part 1

This video is part 1 of a job we did to make a new BIG hydraulic rod and eye for a Hitachi EX1200-6 Excavator bucket cylinder. The rod has a lot of scratches and the eye is completely torn off the rod and has fatigue so we are making a whole new cylinder rod and eye. This shows the step by step process to make the eye including machining, milling, drilling, facing & boring. We start with a 200mm chunk of steel plate and turn it into the hydraulic cylinder rod eye ready to be fit and welded on to the new rod that we make in Part 2!
** WATCH NEXT** Part 2: • Making a BIG Hydraulic...
In this video we are using:
- HMP-150T Hydraulic press
- TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- BM-63VE Milling machine
- Everising H-360HA horizontal bandsaw

I was a well traveled Mechanical Engineer going around the world repairing commercial gearboxes, mostly newspaper printing, mining, large vehicles etc. My neck broke and my fate was sealed so I was medically retired. Your videos allow me to experience what I have missed most in the world, my job. Thank you.

You know I tell people that since I can't work anymore myself because of medical issues, and I don't know about where you're from. But these folks think that I'm not right in my head for missing my work, personally I think they're not right in their's for thinking life is so grand when you can't work, and have to sit around bored outta your head with no real purpose in your life anymore. Glad to see I'm not alone in that sentiment, and I understand exactly how you feel. Btw, dam good work you do young man, your pop, and your grandfathers should be dam proud of the way you turned out. @@timothymilam732 I can relate to your situation. I'm in radio broadcast electronics and in 2000 a ladder slipped with me on it and I crushed L1&2 in my back damaging my spinal cord. Fortunately I was in an ambulance in 10 minutes and operated on the next day by a trauma team of very competent surgeons and given a second chance. Everything is not right but with physio and care I returned to work for another 10 years before I was retired. I opened my own business doing contract engineering and had more work than I wanted until covid19 came along. Now it's emergency only and I could be bored out of my mind if I let it. Instead I've returned to my hobby of building a model traction engine that I started 40+ years ago. It'll keep my mind and hands busy when I'm not on the road. Keep the right attitude and take care of yourself. Who cares what others think. Keep standing. Covid19 doesn't like gravity. My theory anyway. Ron in Canada's banana belt.

It may not seem like a lot, but I really appreciate you showing where the part is located on the vehicle. Very nicely done including the radius. That radius is not just eye candy, it tries to prevent pinpoint stresses from building up on the surface. For it to operate as intended, the finish and the transitions around that radius should be fairly smooth. I probably would have done the last finish for the round part using the button tool just to get that radius as smooth as possible.

I figured all that would do was push it out of the chuck. Then you welded them in and I saw the method of using the corner to actually drag it into the chuck. Very clever idea. I'll store that one away for reference.

Guys, I was a bit slow on the uptake and the penny dropped when Homeless disappeared out the door and the chopper took off at the end . . . I had to laugh at having not read the plot from the get go. I am amazed just how you get the experience to have a crack at some of the huge jobs you do in the first place. You have my respect - and full marks to your crew too.

Hey Kurtis, how the heck did the wife manage to keep the sunglasses on the safety doggo, let slone long enough to film? 🤔 Nice to see you working so hard in fast forward 😁. Fun how your sped up yet the work is slowed down 🤣. Love the machining of the big parts.......so do we have to wait for the second part? 🙄

I've never worked in your line of business - instead I was a senior manager in local government and worked under enormous stress and strain and mountains of paperwork. I'm glad I found your videos which I find really informative and fascinating how you repair and maintain your customers machines. If I had my time over again I think I'd choose your line of business. Keep posting the videos. Regards from Yorkshire. England. 🇬🇧

The closest I come to working in a workshop like yours is when I fire up the Ozito battery drill and yet its after midnight and I've only just finished watching this video. I'm hooked! And now I'm pissed off that that I'm going to have to wait for Part 2. I'm especially interested to see how you go about welding the rod to the Grade 350 mild steel eye. Great video. Clear, concise, to the point and its Australian. What more could a man want. Keep making videos. Thanks

Almost channeling My Mechanics with "so I make a new one" lol. Next is channeling ClickSpring. (omg a collab video with him would be amazing). Curious as to why you face the eye on the lathe and not on the mill? I would have thought it faster on the mill, but obviously there is a reason to use the lathe.
