Making a Bomb-Proof Miter Joint | Live Edge Bar Top

Take a behind the scenes look at the hard work that REALLY goes into every little detail of a custom home! (And honestly I cut the footage in this by video by 10 minutes for watchability).
We are making a stunning live edge bar top for our project out of a HUGE slab of Brazilian Cherry... it has a big mitered joint that needs to be bomb-proof and beautiful! This woodworking project took place over a several day period, and included (but not filmed) was replacing a huge chunk of the slab that was split with a new piece of matching grain!
IF YOU AREN'T... follow us on Instagram for lots of behind the scenes footage and photos!

Hey guys. I'm 60. Years ago when I was allot younger I built houses with an uncle of mine. Saw that little trick you showed using your square to cut 2X and have a perfect cut. Used it today on some decking and really was easy. Thanks. I guess an old dog can learn new tricks, if he's willing to try !!! LMAO. Hope Jamie is doing better. God bless.

If you prime end grain by spreading a thin layer of glue then letting it dry a little before adding more glue and clamping, it will be far stronger than usual end grain gluing.

As an alternative to clamps, you can use bench top connectors Knock down fittings (35mm x 25mm deep hole set in from joint edge). Benefits: pulls together not lifting.🔧

Just a little miter clamping trick for all you fellow craftsmen. Clamp two boards parallel on each side of your miter top and bottom of the work piece, add another one on each side of the first set if you need more clamping pressure (Boards on top of the work piece and clamp down TIGHT. Place craft paper between them and the work piece ). Apply clamps across your joint and tighten. No blocks to glue or remove later. Love the channel btw Perkins Bros. You got a great crew working with you guys :)
@propsguy007
@propsguy007 4 года назад
That's how this is actually done. This method also improves the angle of the clamps, as it really is best if the are properly perpendicular to the cut.

Your spirit is bright and you're countenance is cheery. Sometimes, life's curve balls can make a person bitter, sometimes it makes them better, and sometimes, you have to fight through the bitter to get better. Only fasten one length of the bar hard to the base. The other length needs to have slots with large washers and not tight. Otherwise the miter will either crack or the base will break.

Question!!! Redoing my kitchen countertops with black walnut, inside of countertop is a 90 degree angle outside of countertop is 2 45 degree angles. What would be the better way to form my 90? Miter the countertops or run all the boards the same direction exposing the end grain on the shorter countertop. Mind you the finished top will be approximately 1.75"- 2.00" thick. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Another thing you can do if you don't have the fancy Festool biscuit thangy is to match drill 5/8" holes with a drill, and then use short 3" chunks of 1/2" all-thread slathered in West System epoxy as dowels. Paint the mating surfaces w/ epoxy as well. Thicken the epoxy w/ colloidal silica. Won't go nowhere...
