Making a telecaster thats chambered with spalted elm. Salvaged from a dead elm that suffered from dutch elm disease. A pretty involved build that used rhino cad, a DIY CNC machine and home made pickups.

Way cool. Love the finish. It really brought out the grain in the wood. All of the chrome gives an industrial look to it, like it was a machine, which isn’t too far from the intended use.

Beautiful job! I have a stetsbar tremolo on a Firebird (kinda industrial looking but it STAYS IN TUNE) My only suggestion for future tele builds would be to countersink the control plate. It looks great when the plate is flush with the body.

This is a gorgeous and well made guitar! That said, the only change I would suggest would be to do two individual channels through the main body instead of the individual chambers, and then you can do F-holes (another great Jersey insult) and make it a semi-hollow body Tele. Just my two cents though...

@MARTINA-gc3tq
@MARTINA-gc3tq 5 лет назад
THE MASSACOUSTICS Norman has had a few through his hands and would likely know the answer. I few further things that gave it that wonderful sound would be the bridge pickup fixed onto the bridge base and off course brass saddles. It is amazing how close the Squire Classic Vibe has got to that pioneered sound. squire use a pine block too!

Good work, but if I were you: - I would apply shielding before installing the pickups - I would shield the pickup cavities as well and run a wire to connect all shielding layers to each other and to jack ground - I would connect the bridge to shielding as well - I would embed the jack plate and and control plate into the body. It would be much more easier for you since you have a cnc. - I wouldn't use aluminum since it is very soft and can easily be damaged, especially for such ambidextrous locations. I would use chrome plated parts sold on the market. But again, very good work and thanks for sharing with us. And nice wood selection by the way.
@Cpt_Adama
@Cpt_Adama 5 лет назад
Humbuckers right? No shielding necessary, unless they plan on adding a single coil pickup.
@RadioWerwolf
@RadioWerwolf 5 лет назад
@@Cpt_Adama even if they are humbuckers, they may want different arrangements within humbuckers such as coil splitting to get different sounds from the pickups. Just an idea.
@TranscendentBen
@TranscendentBen 5 лет назад
There's more than one source of hum in electric guitars, and the humbuckers only reduce the magnetic hum (what you get near an amp's power transformer). The shielding is for electrostatic hum (if you hear a hum without touching anything and it reduces when you touch the jack plate, that's electrostatic hum, and cavity shielding, even the humbucker cavities, will reduce it).

Zow! Love the spalted look. It seems to play well, too. One idea you might like: start your countersink holes with the countersink. Then pilot and size-drill them. You’ll get much better finish on the edges of the countersink (plus no chatter-cuts). I think the tear-out on the spalted Birch was inevitable. With grain going every which way and the weakened wood fibers from the salting, it seems it would be hard not to have some of it. Nice job, boys!
@themassacoustics264
@themassacoustics264 5 лет назад
Thanks for that info. Every bit of knowledge helps.
@dewesq55
@dewesq55 4 года назад
The reason they got tearout is that they didn't know what they were doing. They should have drilled very small pilot holes for the tuners then used the forstner bit to drill ~halfway through from each side meeting in the middle. The pilot holes will center the spur of the forstner bit. This is standard practice for woodworkers.
@CCCfeinman55
@CCCfeinman55 4 года назад
I agree with your “cure”. That would have been the best way. Or maybe they could have done it on a CNC router with a spiral down cut router bit. I see no crime in not know what one it doing...especially, as in this case, I think, exploring new ground (so to speak). Regardless of the shortcomings of their method, it was a good effort, with great results. Any of a number of best practices would have worked to better effect than what they did.

I'm impressed with the build, to a point. Great work with the CNC, most of us mere mortals will have to do it with a hand router. First question, though; with a beautiful figured top, why not rear rout and lose the control plate from the top? I mean, you HAVE a CNC machine, you COULD cut really clean pot and switch holes... Not at all sure why you had to mill your own plates, either. And why use aluminum? Aluminum scratches much easier than brass or chromed plates, and making it from scrap like that was SO thick! And, by the way, you mounted the neck pickup backwards. The screw adjustable poles should be closest to the neck.
