Making a crypt for halloween

To make this crypt you'll need two sheets of 1"styrofoam (2' x 8') and two tubes of styrofoam glue. I prefer the pink/blue styrofoam for this project because I can get better detail than with the white styrofoam. White styrofoam will work, but it's messy. Other tools you'll need: a measuring tape, marker, saw, a straight edge, a rasp, wire brush, acetone, and paint. If my cuts are a little off, I use some paintable, exterior caulking and everything blends in pretty good. It's supposed to look old and worn and imperfect anyways…...

Great video, thanks for sharing. Great idea for sure all together. Great dry brushing, when it happens doesn't look like much but adds a great effect at the end. Glad to see a video!

A foam cutting knife (heat knife) would've been your best friend. Great job, though!

+bransonhauntedhills Thanks Mary! I love working with foam more than any other material and I just can't get the same detail with anything else. Plus, it's lightweight and waterproof!

You just can't beat it. I am looking into making a homemade hot wire table. I seen a great video on a portable one today. I think me and the hubs can do this!

What type of paint did you use? I’ve heard that certain types of paint can dissolve the exposed foam. Thanks.
@hickabodcrane
@hickabodcrane 5 лет назад
I always use water based latex exterior paint on all my props. It's true, some oil based paints do dissolve foam board.

How do you anchor them when they are in your yard for Halloween?
@hickabodcrane
@hickabodcrane 4 года назад
For my crypts, I don't even bother anchoring them to the ground. I usually put a small fence around them so they're somewhat contained. For my larger stackable tombstones, I drive a 1 X 2 stake (18") into the ground first, set the bottom section of the tombstone over the stake but along the side on the inside, so its not seen. I'll then drill a screw into the stake, and then into the inside of the tombstone. I guess you could do something similar with the crypts too, or maybe glue something on the inside of the crypt wall to give it some more weight if you have a lot of wind in your area.

@@hickabodcrane every year we have a big storm sometime before Halloween with winds like 40 and sometimes stronger so the crypts I love them but not sure a good way to keep them in my yard when the wind comes.

Where can I get 1 inch foam board in the pink or blue? I went to Lowe's and Home Depot and they only have 2 inch.
@hickabodcrane
@hickabodcrane 5 лет назад
I bought my 1 inch foam at the local hardware store. You can use 2 inch of course, but it's quite a bit more expensive. If you do end up using the 2 inch foam, the joints will end up stronger because of a greater surface area for the glue. Another suggestion, I've been using gorilla glue instead of the PL foam board glue, I'm finding the joints weren't holding up as well with the PL brand. Hope this helps

What kind of saw are you using...
@hickabodcrane
@hickabodcrane 5 лет назад
It's a Japanese woodworking saw called a "ryoba" saw. It has a very fine blade and is two sided with different teeth for different cuts.
