With limited IT knowledge, this is a Very instructive video...glad I watched it ALL first before starting the process! Didn't know before starting to install VPN that: I would need 2 routers (not just 1), pay for a subscription for a VPN account, have 2 patch cables on hand, there's no mention of pre-requisite items until you got to those items at that part of the video. Might be nice to mention that ahead of time. Thanks for posting.

I followed your directions to set up PIA on a dedicated Netgear R6300v2 router. I used DNS.Watch, L2TP, a separate network and double checked against your setup screens but the wired setup says it is NOT connected to the internet on the Genie screen. However, the cat connection from the VPN router I am setting up to my laptop is passing an internet connection to my laptop. I am not a techie but I did try to copy in detail everything you did. Any thoughts about what I should check?

Hi Richard, have been following the post and I have a question about the Dedicated VPN Router setup: I have a Actiontec c3000A as the main router supplied by my ISP and my Secondary Router is a TP-Link AC1900 with a Synology DS418 Play NAS. Your video puts the VPN on a seperate network, how can that be setup so that I can still have access to my Synology NAS while traveling outside my home? Any advice would be very helpful.

what you missed is that operating system can track what you do since every program thar runs on your os most use the os api that allow every progam to access advance i/o or netwrok operations. So you need to find a secure os first

Hey Richard, Ideally, this is how I'd like to set up my VPN. I'm about 20 Minutes into the video and its great so far. However, my VPN service has told me that my router firmware needs to be compatible with their service. They list several routers that have firmware which is compatible and neither of the two routers I have are mentioned. Before I listen to the rest of the video, I'd like to know if you mention anything about the router firmware? If so, what if my router firmware is not compatible with my VPN? I don't want to go out and buy another router just to install the VPN. I'll just install it on my individual devices.

Is there a fix for this..?????

Hi Richard, first of all I wanna thank you so much for sharing such a great knowledge in a very clear way. I have a problem setting up a TP LINK as a VPN router connected in WDS to a main router. We have a conflict about how this should be done. To connect the second router, the one I wish to run as a VPN one, wirelessly in WDS, the routers need to be in the same net as 192.168.178.1 the main and 192.168.178.2 the second vpn one ( TP LINK Archer C6). I understand though that to have the router to behave as a VPN one it has to be on a different subnet which makes it impossible to get the internet data through the WDS option. Any hint about how to work around this issue? Thanks a lot for you support

When I use a my app VPN websites say my I.p. Address is the server I set. But if I go to google location history it says I am where I live at. The VPN doesn’t fool it. If I use a fake GPS app it will change my location and then I use the VPN. Can I use a DD-WRT router and be safer with the VPN dedicated on it and extend my WiFi with it on the same router? How will I use a dual band DD-WRT and do I have to configure it with LINUX? Also, I will be wanting to connect to a synology NAS to download movies it will be my server. Will this work?

@@richardlloydusa Thankyou so much. Your videos are great and are to the point and are extremely easy to follow. Now a days asus merlin supported routers are very popular for for dedicated vpn routers. However lot of people struggle with kill switch. If vpn somehow turns off WAN gets wide open. The sole purpose of dedicated vpn router is to 10o% make sure IP addresses don’t get leaked. I would appreciate if you could do a video on this. I am sure it will get 1000s of views. @richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 3 года назад
This can be done but it is not the subject of this video. You would have to replace the WAN IP configuration with what your ISP would be giving to you normally all the other settings are the same. You can find that information from your router when it's connected directly to your modem and surfing normally. Again use your information in the WAN configuration under the advanced tab on the netgear config. In my case mine gave me an IP address 24.162.133. XXX (This number is the IP address the ISP gave my router XXX is me keeping my IP private your will be different anyway) Subnet mask 255.255.224.0 (yours may be different look at your router info when it's connected to the Internet normally on the WAN side) Default gateway 24.162.128.1 (Yours will be different) Domain Name Server (DNS) Address use Get Automatically from ISP. I set this up on the router I used on the video and it worked. Now I don't know how long it will work for because my ISP could change my public the IP at any time which would disconnect me but at that time I could find out what the new one is and re-config the router as I showed above. Good luck.

Hey Richard, so glad l found your site. Your instruction videos are some of the best l seen. I am a newbie at this and computer retarded at times. I have a question for you please. I currently bought a Netgear Nighthawk MR1100 as a mobile traveling device. My isp is US based. And while l am in Canada and Mexico l get throttled down to lower speeds and make this modem useless while outside the US. Is there anyway that a VPN can be used to keep my location in the US. May be a stupid question, but that's what newbies do. Thanks in advance. Keep up the channel, and your great work.

If you set up a vpn server (pivpn) can your isp still not see what's going on, or does it only work when your on pubic vpn providers?

VPN (as it is used in this video) is an encrypted tunnel through your ISP. They can see the connection to the VPN gateway but they can't see what's traveling through that tunnel. All they know is that you are connected to a VPN provider past that they can't tell what you are doing this ensures your privacy. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Quick question's. 1. Why wouldn't you just VPN your primary router? 2. If my computer is connected to VPN router, then VPN router to primary router, couldn't someone track my primary router and make the VPN router invalid? Sorry not making the connection on why two routers ...

1. vpn router slows your speed and decreases bandwidth a lot, much more than using the app on a device.

Great Video but I couldn't make it work. My ISP is comcast cable internet service. First I set up the WNR2000v3 as a VPN router and tried to connect to my Motorola MT7711 primary router.. Could not get Internet service. Motorola said their router was not compatible.. Then I activated a new Netgear CM500 Modem and attached a Netgear WNDR3400v3 as a new primary router successfully. Reconfigured the WNR2000v3 again and connected it to the WNDR3400v3. Again unable to get internet service thru the VPN Router. Any idea where I went wrong.

I am looking at the PIA page. I can't find the "network" page that is shown in this video. The only thing I can find that remotely looks like the network page in this video is on their OpenVPN Configuration Generator page. Has PIA changed their website to prevent making a VPN router as shown in this video? edit: I found a location that has VPN being used as gateways so ppl can view content from specific countries. I can't for the life of me to get this to work. I have a modem, a main router, and a sub-router (the VPN router). I have hooked the VPN router to the main router....can't get it to work. I have hooked it up to the modem...can't get it to work. I have put the modem in passthrough and normal...can't get this to work. I have followed the instructions in the video to the letter. I have watch other videos of yours: connecting two routers together in one network, and it works flawlessly. I can't for the life of me get this VPN router to work. I am trying to get a VPN router to work so my wife, kids, and her parents can watch Japanese content. The website with the VPNs is vpngate (google it as i know youtube is weir about putting in website addresses in the comments. my moden is BGW210-700, my main router is a Netgear RAX20, and the VPN router is a Netgear R6020. Some help/advice would be helpful.

It's very hard for me to diagnose this, there are too many variables. Does the PIA VPN client work on any computer on the network? I suspect that you are failing to authenticate but again I'm only guessing. I'm glad and very happy to know that I could help you. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

At about 40 minute, you say the "My IP Address" on the VPN router needs to be OUTSIDE the DHCP server range, then 30 seconds later while explaining this, you state the number needs to be ON the IP network range. I think this is confusing a lot of people.

Can these settings be configured on a Linksys using the same steps?

@@richardlloydusa thanks I have the EA9500. I watched your whole tutorial and can this be done with only one router? I notice you have the router to be changed linked to the one connected to the internet.

Be aware of which browser you use. There's a reason Google is so eager to provide a "free" browser and DNS servers. VPNs wont protect you from a snooping browser. Also, PIA has gotten bigger over the years. The bigger a VPN service gets, the more that websites like Amazon will detect and block their traffic.

That is certainly possible and true. If it happens someone will think of a solution around it and sell that too. LOL. Thank you for watching, commenting and the valuable feedback. I appreciate it greatly. All the best. 👍😀

Are there any VPN providers that employ high-speed servers. I'm connected with Spectrum with a service that runs at 486 MBPS. I had an account with a VPN provider and had to cancel. I was reduced by 90% in internet speed. I dropped to 46 MBPS from the forementioned 486 MBPS. Now I have hooked up with another service and I got a 60% drop down to 222 MBPS. When I told the rep from the provider about drop they replied, "isn't 222 MBPS fast enough". And I replied I paying for 500 MBPS and getting 486 MBPS without VPN, why should I settle for such a drop? Does anyone know of a high-speed VPN provider? Many internet TV services now require a VPN to operate.

I use Private Internet Access and they are pretty fast. But you need to understand that VPN is an encrypted tunnel which the data you send needs to be encrypted first, sent and decrypted on the other side, responded to re-encrypted sent back to you and decrypted by your computer when you receive it. There is a considerable amount of overhead in the process so your computer needs to have to have the processing power to keep up (most modern computers) have more than enough CPU power to do it though. I have a 118 Mbps connection to the net straight through no VPN and with the VPN client on my Ubuntu Linux machine, 24 GiB memory, Intel® Xeon(R) CPU X5680 @ 3.33GHz × 12 core GeForce GTX 780 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 (I have more than enough processing power to handle it) my VPN speed is 95.57 Mbps so I am losing approximately 20% of the throughput which I consider normal. I would contact Private Internet Access and see what kind of throughput they can promise you and if it's acceptable go for it. Make sure you get a written (email) statement with what they are promising. Works well for me. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Most do, but every VPN service will slow your connection, you just have to find the one which is acceptable for you as the encryption takes time. In addition to this, you are probably not running your test to the same server once you activate your VPN, so you'll have to make sure you manually select the same server if you want to properly compare before and after speeds. Only getting a 15% drop is very good, somewhere around 50% drop is acceptable, but this is what trial periods are for, along with testing different servers of the VPN service during the trial periods.

What happens to the ip address if you go back in pia apk and change cities does it change automatically in the router or do you have to change it manually in the router? As i use a netgear router as well as PIA.
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 5 лет назад
You have to change it manually in the router as I show in the setup, but that is not a hard thing to do. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

I'm literally zoning out watching some of this and i'm barely a few minutes in, i need a plug and play solution which has nothing to do with command prompt or anything that remotely smells of programming, thats way beyond me and it cannot CANNOT be on the ISP router because I need the default internet to be available for the rest of the household to use

I am confused. The guy who installed my home dedicated VPN router with Nord setup the openvpn client on my router with encryption settings certificate and configuration stuff from Nord. How does this method work as it only uses the simple login supplied by vpn service?
