Just want to take a second to say thank you for sharing and taking the time to explain this target making process. I’m a beginner, my knives get delivered today. I was just going to use a couple bales of hay, then I seen your video, so I’m on my way to Home Depot. I’m sure it will make all the difference in the world, so thanks again.

Comparing to other builds on RU-vid this one has been the best. Rows of blocks and screwed down to be able to replace each row when needed. Compared to shimming a shimming and calling it good. Also using less expensive 2x4s versus 4x4 is better IMO. Thanks for making the video

Great work, just a couple tips. One the frame didn't need screws from top to bottom, only horizontally for the rows . Second your throwing a half spin with the blades, half rotation, which is the most powerful form and thus called combat throwing sometimes . I've seen the 2x4 a lot but have had better luck with 4x4. Lastly it's better to attach a stopper, or block, or jig to the miter saw, so each cut is as close as possible to identical. When you measure all your cuts right off the bat your losing about a 16th of in inch each cut because of the width of the saw blade. Keep building brother thumbs up to you . When the zombies come it will be nice to have all these metal toys lying around right lol.

Great looking board! I've been meaning go make a pressure board for some time. Just a tip I learned, soaking your targets will make the board much kinder to your knives. Hose a target like this down and let it dry and you'll be able to hear how softly the knives hit the board. I'm still very new to throwing, only about six months into it as a serious hobby so I still know very little, but this one tip has really made a difference for me. Love your channel!

Nice..... now I'm I'll be humming Benny Benassi Satisfaction all day... actually more like thinking about that video... oorah! ;) I'd suggest clamping two 6-8" wide ply pieces onto both sides at the top when you're standing those up to keep everything in alignment when screwing in the edge pieces - I saw you on the struggle bus a little keeping it all aligned but... it worked. Nice project tho.

I like the idea of this wooden target but I've also been thinking, if someone has a chainsaw with a long bar, like 18" or longer you could cut a 36" diameter section of tree trunk, say 3" or 4" thick and probably get the target for free. If you can talk to a tree cutting outfit and find out when they're going to cut down a large diameter tree somewhere in your area they might just cut a slab off for you for free or maybe a small fee. Sometimes you can drive around and find trees that have been downed and just lay there for days, weeks or months and could probably get permission to cut off a slab or two.

Huge tip: make a 3.5-inch mark on your miter saw table (or clamp a block to the fence.) Measure ONCE and cut each block! Also, you may choose to use 4x4 posts and cut only HALF as many pieces! www.RandysSuperSharp.com for beginner throwing knife reviews.

On these type of targets , if it stays outside or you wet the wood before you throw to make the wood softer , you should never use any type of glue, use 1 to 2 inch screws & put a piece of 1/4 inch plywood on the back the diameter of your target . I made a target like this out of 4x4s each piece being 6 inches long & I used 1 to 2 inch screws in the back with plywood , mine stays outside year round .

If you hold the blade then it is NOT blade forward...also it is spinning one and a half revolutions...if it was just one rev then it would strike handle first since it was handle towards the target when you released it. Some guys throw only a half spin from a blade grip...this gives you two effective ranges with the same spin rate...a short range half spin stick and a longer range one and a half spin stick. Nice target, With the half spin throw, you can learn the slip rate and start to apply some real power....Your music was cool for one repetition...then i wanted to stick a knife in the speaker....

I made one of these out of 4x4s and ended up "eating" through the center of it in less than 50 hours of throwing practice. My next project will have the pieces wedged in tightly and screwed, not glued, in place so the most damaged sections can be replaced more easily. (For now, I'm throwing at free tree "rounds' that someone wanted hauled off)

Wish I had a saw. Will it wear my knives down faster with a large cutting board?
@JM-nh8yp
@JM-nh8yp 9 лет назад
Nice. As someone else suggested you really need to step up a stop block (jig) on the miter saw so that you can simply repeat the same cut over and over. That way you don't have to measure and mark any of the wood and you will get all the pieces exactly the same size. Two big benefits! Easier and more precise!

I'm thinking 2 pieces of osb or plywood, with target size squares cut out of each one at whatever height you want the target, and some 2x4 blocks cut a few inches shorter than the target to connect the plywood sheets. Then you can slide the square target into the plywood. Not sure if the idea is presented clearly enough.

Why would you use a 2x4 instead of a 4x4?
@mojodank
@mojodank 4 года назад
For a beginner practicing no spin from 15 feet away this target is too small. I have a makeshift target out of 6 4 foot long 2×8s nailed to 1 inch thick plywood. The whole target is 4'×4'. The biggest change I need to make is to use the materials to make an end grain target. Even 2×8 lumber chips all over the place eventually.
@salty_steak_2743
@salty_steak_2743 7 лет назад
Why dont you use 4×4's
@bumstudios8817
@bumstudios8817 4 года назад
Because it is proven the molecular structure of the 2x4 is more sturdy and able to absorb the shock of a knife or axe under 10.2 ounces vs a 4x4 when the tilt is set at negative 45 degrees axis from the longitude lateral line of the equator. As long as a orange cat doesn't walk by before the blade of unobtainium is first thrown with the harmonious number of serrations wrapped in 12 string paracord with 3 strings removed.. if not he would be screwed......... OR it was just the materials he had at hand, but i go with answer #1

Why the small pieces, instead of a sheet of plywood? Is this so the grain of the wood is exposed, so the knives impact more deeply and don't fall out?
@itsdox7433
@itsdox7433 9 лет назад
Its similar to making an end grain cutting board with exactly the same benefits. The grains will spread allowing the knife to stick with minimal damage to the target. Face or edge grain targets will chip and splinter out faster, reducing the life of your target and knives, as face/edge grain is harsher on your knives than end grain.

Seems like i will just keep destroying my blades if i throw them at hard wood. Unless we are investing about $10,000-100,000? into a bagful of titanium blades? Also the stronger blades. Isnt there a reason we don't buy them? Like not being able to sharpen them?

Practice the finger slide and you'll be able to throw knives without any spin, especially if you don't know the distance or low light conditions prevent you from estimating correctly.

If you are just learning how to do this for entertainment (like throwing darts) then flipping them is fine but if you ever wanted to be able to throw a knife that would actually penetrate flesh you need to learn how to throw "no spin". I got into knife throwing as a kid and enjoyed it, once an old timer taught me how to throw no spin I could sink it every time, up to a certain distance. One of the big differences is that with practice you can throw the knife a lot harder if you throw it without spinning it. The basic principal of throwing no spin is to hold it by the handle, and when throwing you let the tip of your index finger slide down the handle of the knife as it is released, taking the natural spinning motion out of the throw. Your throws are more accurate and more lethal if you learn to throw 'no spin'..
@thaladriataeyeon3265
@thaladriataeyeon3265 7 лет назад
I know this is an old comment to reply to, but would just like to say that as a very amateur knife thrower I have thrown a 303g knife at 73fps by throwing half spin from the blade. I don't know what that is, if not lethal.
