Making a floral arrangement for a fabulous arty venue

Today, join me making a Jolie laide, handsome rather than pretty, arrangement for demanding artistic surroundings where art is all.
It is very important not to be blandly pretty whether you're a person or a work of art. Flowers need to challenge one to look at them - to see why they are enticing (or not!) Here we have a #30stemchallenge for you - go and find some mismatch in your garden, hard colours, dark, contrast, just thirty stems, and see if you can make something that draws the eye as I hope this one does.
This is a table centre so it mustn't be too big either, or too tall, or fill too much of the space. Enjoy this process and have a go yourself.
Enjoy!

Randomly I watched one of your videos from about 2 yrs ago. It has your dad playing the piano at the end. I watch it now and again, as it brings me joy. Why? No idea. Could be that I get it from watching him getting fulfilment from doing something that is so hard for most of us, brilliantly. His sense of "simple" accomplishment at the end, reminds me of how you are at the end of one of your floral creations:).

Loved that demo ! Can’t believe how many stems you got into those small jars ! Can you give some guidance on choosing roses that don’t go to a mushy head hanging mess in the rain & which mint you used please ?
@theflowerfarmer
@theflowerfarmer 20 дней назад
the mint is chocolate mint - all roses will eventually flop in the rain but only when they're very blown so keep deadheading and they'll stand better x

Wonderful. I see what you mean, it's an "adult bouquet". Subtle, complex and interesting. I imagine I might substitute blue pincushion flowers for the sweet peas (can't grow them in hot California) with yellow roses. And would have to think hard about foliage (not fond of dark foliage in my garden - looks like a black hole). But I also have Lucifer here and there, and the neighbor's English ivy growing through the fence, reads pretty dark. Hmmm.
@mdorn6592
@mdorn6592 Месяц назад
Plant sweet pea starts in October to establish roots, they will over winter then pop in the earliest part of spring and you'll have them until it gets too hot (a little longer if you put shade cloth over the area)...I just picked up a hypericum inodorum 'Miracle night' (St. Johns wort variety) at a botanical garden (hardy zones 6-9) - not only does it have a stunning dark foliage but a deep dark berry that looks great in the landscape AND cut flower arrangements

@commonfarmflowers I have recently discovered you Georgie, subsequently the binge watching has been epic. I am curious, I know you have mentioned permaculture and sustainability, have you had a look at the new DEFRA SFI guidelines and can you make any sense of them? I have many questions for you. have you come across silver pasture, syntropic planting or regenerative agroforestry? What do you think of Dr Elaine Ingham? If you are looking a good podcast I can not recommend her fungi lectures and discussions on soil health enough. Have you ever had your soil analysed? I ask all this because I have a cunning plan and would adore the opportunity to bounce my ideas of someone sensible and knowledgeable such as yourself. Any way kind regards and hope you have a most excellent season, this year and all the years to come. god bless
@theflowerfarmer
@theflowerfarmer 25 дней назад
lol - no not looked at latest DEFRA SFI guidelines and I will look up Dr Ingham - there's a wonderful book about fungi called Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake which I very much recommend in return x
