Awesome video man. The shaft wasn't too big or too small. Just the perfect size.

I think you made a great job with this project Ralph. There was a lot of work evolved with the handle a lot of sanding I use a lot of hammers in my job as you know i use a copper hammers. You did the correct thing by soaking it in oil. The handle looks really good the black makes it stand out well 👍

I suck at 3d modeling software too. Sometimes I find it's easier to do some parts of the patternmaking process by hand. Like you could have drilled holes for alignment dowels in your pattern halves then hidden the outside ends of the holes with some bondo and sandpaper. Did you think about adding coreprints and making a corebox? Anyhow, the brass hammer turned out quite nice. 👍

My thought on a core box was to just change the dimensions of the hammer head STL so it's really wide and then use it to make longer cores 😋 I really need to put some time into learning 3D software 😅

@@ralphmourik lol me too but I'd rather spend the time to get good at making old school wooden patterns than spend even more time at the computer than I already do for my day job. I was thinking the same thing, chop off everything but the eye from your model then stretch it and print it. Even I could manage that I think (if I could get my printer to cooperate). Maybe something to try on another project.

A challenge well met, it looks very nice, if your hand fits your shaft comfortable you done ok but oiling your shaft 🫣. The brass cross wedge is an awesome finish. ? How do you get the residual metal out of your crucible, ie how do you clean it for the next use.

The good thing about graphite is that most things don't stick to it, so in most cases it's just holding it upside down and tapping it and most will just fall out. Slivers of left behind metal and dross you can just pull out with long thin pliers. Sometimes I use a small brush to get all the white dust out and then the inside looks good as new. This was a fun project, and now that I have the pattern for the head I will be making more "ommers" in different metals and alloys 👍🔨⚒

Nice melt but that old iron was a relic from the past and they just don't make them anymore.

True, but they have no real value over here, I checked it beforehand offcourse 😁 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

I used wax on my handle mainly because that was what was available. 🤣

Where did you get that smelter?
@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik Год назад
The furnace is the Goldbrunn Therm 3000. It is of way better quality then most on the market, I really like working with it, but it is somewhat more expensive then most others. Just google the name to see if any are sold in your area. 👍
