The ovaled cylinder; obviously I would weld the flanges to cylinder BEFORE assembling the frame, the problem here was that I couldnt get access to weld the flanges all round the cylinder so just welded the sides where I could reach. This shrunk those opposing sides which pulled the cylinder into an oval shape. obviously the solution is to weld the flanges to the cylinder BEFORE assembling the frame, Lesson learned!

You are a proper engineer Eric, I wish I had a supportive teacher that understood my way of thinking instead of lazy arrogant workshy office workers. I never had much luck with hand tools, too much interference in school and mothering at home to get to grips with cutting, grinding, pressing, rolling or extruding. Buffing, welding and bending is all I think I can do and that is at a push, skilled fab work is a real talent and you have it in spades so thank you for sharing your gift, time and passion. We are lucky to have you in our midst but some of us will have to leave the net because the energy bills are gonna get real high soon. Its so heartbreaking. May God bless you my tough Northern brother. :--)

I really appreciate the fact that you show your mistakes and then repair them - but even more than that, that you go through the process and pitfalls of building this press and then first thing you decide to do is break random stuff with it. My inner 13 year old says "much respect"

The tight spot on the cylinder bore was caused by shrinkage from welding. You needed to order a cylinder wit a front flange for mounting and avoid welding the cylinder. Every time the piston goes past that tight spot it will damage your seals.

Cripes - that's a LOT of travel for a press. Nice. I'd be wary of smashing stuff with it though - it doesn't look made for off-axis loads. Interesting that you made your own - a very clever guy/RU-vidr in New Zealand (Marty T, recommended) wanted a hydraulic press, looked into making one, and found that he could buy a Chinese press cheaper than he could buy materials to make one!

I commend you for showing the mistakes. It makes the video a valuable tool for learning. For dimension critical parts I recommend either doing the final machining after welding (which probably wasn't feasible for this particular project), or designing a mechanical method for fixing the hydraulic cylinder to the press structure. That aside, the project result was very nice. This press will render many years of useful service. Thanks for sharing your work.

The tack-welding process used when welding the second cylinder was the right way to go. You might have done it and not shown it, but a refinement there is to use your air compressor to cool down the part as you go. To absolutely avoid warping then follow the rule, "If it's too hot to touch, then it's too hot".

this is why you fill the barrel full of oil before welding on it, i make cylinders all the time. also when fixing a crack in the weld were it leaked, youcant just grind it out an weld it even if it looks like a pin hole, you have to drill a small hole on each end clean it out really good with brake clean from inside out, if you dont drill it will keep cracking farther and the oil if not cleaned never welds good and do not repair with mig welder use stick welding with 7018 3/32

Was wondering how that weld was going to treat you on that first cylinder. You might have gotten away with it had you left the piston at the other end of the bore then welded... but then again it very well could have seized on the first full stroke. I hone every single cylinder after welding. Just no way around it. For a setup like this I cut threads on the bottom, then thread a collar on. The collar can be welded or bolted to the frame. But that requires access to a machine shop. Careful about lateral loads on the rod on those long extensions. They are easier to bend than you might think. Minor bend wears out the seal faster.

Could be convenient to speed up the course of the ram to fill the first gap then switch to a lower speed when you get close to the object, without having to turn a knob all the way ?
