Making a Lathe Chuck Subplate | WW222

While machining a tombstone for a pocket NC, Ed was inspired to make the job easier. The lathe chuck on a mill table is great for workholding but who wants to mess with strap clamps if you don't have to? Let's machine a subplate for the lathe chuck so we can toss it on and bolt it down. No more fuss.

Only tip would be: You did the SMW logo prior to final finish face pass. Heavily used tools, particularly chamfer tools when used on various materials can leave a kerf on both the upper and lower edges so if you chamfer prior to doing your perimeter finish and face finish you are left with cleaner edges.

This is just so incredibly satisfying to watch. I have a question tho. I am learning the job at the moment here in good old germany and.. I always am like SUPER precautious, checking every setting etc. like 5 times. How do I speed up that process? Do I just have to get used to my machine ?

Glue idea, you would likely need a anaerobic adhesive to cement. Option a, that I've set in a vacuum chamber before (because when air is removed it bonds) loktite, the highest strength they got. The second is a quick set epoxy, that uses a chemical reaction and or heat to set. A 1 or 5 min set type could be had cheaply, and in combination with the powder coat tape could be a key plastic bow single peace for heavy hoggin. Just a electrician from rhode island who had a manual lathe in the basement

I think my favorite part of these videos is watching the superfly do its thing! Could a 2.5hp router motor on a very rigid cnc router run a superfly?
@dmtdreamer
@dmtdreamer 5 лет назад
Tormach has less HP so thats not the problem...but rpm may be. Usually 2500 rpm for superfly, can the router spin that slow and have some torque? Might just need to reduce DOC to keep it spinning. Good luck.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Chamfers are usually 45 degrees are they not? That would make a 90 (included) spotting drill which would have you attacking only the rim of the dimple. This is not ideal.

Don’t ask me how I know but 3 jaw chuck teeth aren’t as strong as they look when you put them in a mill.......
@Echo51
@Echo51 5 лет назад
Isn't this because when milling you apply force away from the chuck(upwards), while in a lathe, some/most of the force is pushing the stock *against* the chuck?
@ToddSandercock

@@Echo51 Yes I would say that's a factor for the grip strength. I had a complete failure of a 2 of the teeth though. Was impressive. I now have a lang 3 jaw vice that's designed for milling use. Great asset for the shop.

@gusbisbal9803
@gusbisbal9803 5 лет назад
Ed, how are you? Your issue with the tap is bonding a very flat smooth thermo setting plastic to itself. The best way to do this is to disrupt the crystal matirx on the surface and allow the CA glue to get into the plastic to a deeper level. This needs to be done on an atomic level rather than just scuffing the surface. The way to do this is by using a primer for Polyolefins that effectively disrupts (doesn't quite dissolve) the surface of the PET. Here is an article on it. www.swiftsupplies.com.au/blog/news-and-blog/our-best-super-glues-for-plastic-part-2-choosing-super-glue-different-types-plastic/ There are also better glues than just standard CA but both the better glues and the primer is probably a 2x improvement for sure.

I don't think you will find a cement for your PET (aka polyester) tape. PET is notoriously difficult to fuse. I used to be a projectionist, back in the days when movies came on film. Release prints were made on a PET base, and the only ways to splice them were to use an expensive ultrasonic welding machine, or to use sticky splicing tape. Solvent-based cements, which work great on acetate-based film, have no effect on PET.

Why tape again and not just glue straight to the material?
@ZPositive
@ZPositive 5 лет назад
I've tried just gluing straight to the material, and it doesn't hold nearly as well as tape-glue-tape. Maybe a few factors at play, like the tape providing a little vibration damping for the brittle superglue, or better tape-glue adhesion than part-glue adhesion. Tape-glue-tape is the only way to fly.
@antsman331

I don't know why these guys tape blocks to plates in the fist place. He still flipped it and decked the back off. so why not give your self enough stock to hold in a vice and not risk throwing your part? Or bolt it to the fixture plate threw the counter bores then contour.
