I started leatherwork in the mid nineteen eighties because I had a bunch on nice knives with crappy sheaths. So I have been doing leatherwork for the last 27 years or so. For the last twenty-five I have been doing a lot of medieval type leatherwork although I still do modern stuff. Primarily as a hobby although I will occasionally make something for sale. I know this is long winded but it hopefully tells you I know a bit about leatherwork. I find your work top notch. You tooled the back of the sheath. (Al Shelton who made leather products for the rich and famous (such as Gene Autry) would decorate the inside of his belts because if your paying for custom work it should show.). Anyone who sees this sheath will know it was hand crafted. You hand sewed the sheath. Once again showing your interested in making the best sheath possible. And while I know and do most of what you showed I learned a bit from you about using the paints and antiquing. I know that his is a bit long winded but hopefully others less versed in the mysteries of leather will read it and be moved to subscribe and like to improve their own leatherwork

Hi Peter! Well, I'm at a loss for words. What a great compliment, thank you very much! You have about 15 years on me so I'm sure you've seen or delved into the production of many sheaths like you mentioned. I'm happy you were able to take away something from the tutorial as I tried my best to reach out to the beginner through advanced, even though I am still trying to improve my skills, and techniques myself. I believe (I assume like you), there's no room to cut corners in the search for quality, especially when trying to produce heirloom pieces like I try to do for my customers. There's been many times I've had to restart a piece due to a slip of a tool or misplaced measurement, when it would have been easy to just let it go. Speaking of medieval leatherwork, it's always something that has interested me, just haven't had a chance to indulge in this style of the craft. Once again, thank you for watching, and the great compliment!!!

Having had to give up my career in my mid 40s a few years ago due to a spinal injury, I've been stuck in limbo not knowing which way to go with my life. It's videos like this which have given me the inspiration to rediscover my creative side, (which, for some reason, disappeared a couple of decades ago), and get into leatherworking. Once I'm more skilled I'll start tooling, airbrushing and maybe even old knife restoration.

This is probably the most in depth and well explained all around sheath build video on RU-vid. I was immediately blown away by your carving and tooling skills, then the airbrushing took it to another level! Right now in my very young knife making and leather crafting journey, I'm good for some mediocre pattern tooling, and that's it lol--the carving is lightyears ahead of me. Thanks for the awesome in depth video, it will be one I reference frequently as I try to grow my leather skills.

Great job all the way around I didn't want to miss a minute of your work/instructional video. This is a great way to share your art. Well done! I watched a show about what it takes to make a saddle for a horse and they show a little about how to make a show saddle with the skills you used to make a sheath. They get good money for the ornate "show saddles" they make. I wish you well and hope success follows you!

Yeah, the production and editing are great, and only add to the freaking awesome craftsmanship demonstrated. It takes an industrious and conscientious attitude to become a craftsman. Definitely props to you man, that is a kickass sheath.! I really admire the time and effort that you put into really making this, as much of a piece of art as it is a sheath for a knife. The amount of detail that you added and the way you create the overall plan of attack approaching this particular style of sheath, is refreshing and interesting. You appear to stick to the methods that you choose to use at the beginning and what stages you were going to do them in. I'm sure a lot of the reason you chose to do it this way comes mainly from experience, or would that be incorrect? I only say that because of how smooth and fluid you go from one stage to the next without hesitation. This was very apparent when you started the coloring process. It would take me 2 days just to get the colors to turn out anywhere close to what yours did! Lol. You've given me no choice but to subscribe because how in the hell could anyone watch this entire video and not appreciate the quality of time, effort , and pride that was put into making a knife sheath? Maybe one day America can find it's way back to these very standards, the ones that made this Country the birthplace of innovation.
@TwistedOakHandmade

Thank you for the compliment, Chad, and the sub. I plan on doing more leather work videos showcasing carving and coloring. As you figured, the process I use from beginning to end strictly comes from trial, and error, and learning from my mistakes...lots of them. Of course watching leather craft videos like the one I made here definitely helped me when starting out so I'm trying to return the favor. In regard to the coloring process, I've been lucky to transition my fine art skills in oil painting, and airbrushing over to this medium, which has helped tremendously in the creation of pieces such as this. I hope the video helps you along with the craft.

Hi Yawan! Thank you for the compliment and kind words. Glad you liked the modified screw driver trick. It's really simple to make, just take any old, medium sized screw driver, and take it to a bench grinder. Grind the end off and give it a slight rounded curve, around a 45 degree angle. You want to push the screw driver into the grinder hard enough to cause a burr on the tapered end. After this take the tool to a medium grit sharpening stone to hone the edge and strop it to a polish.

Hi. As an amateur i´m just working for the first time in my life a sheath and it is for my friend. He asked me to make a new sheath for him because the old one was broken. I principally make leather cuffs, phone cases...etc. It is almost ready. It is a " traditional " sheath. Your´s is very beautiful and i will try to make next time like yours, for my self. It is nice to watch when a professional makes something and you learn always something new. Usually i don´t care to listen music in the background, but your music choices for this video fits like a glove. Thank you.

Thank you, Lee! Unfortunately I've been inundated with the full time job but I'm gearing up to make another sheath project. Been trying to think of what to cover in the video so maybe I'll focus on more of the airbrushing.

I try to make what I don't have...at least within my capabilities. I'm actually working on a video right now on how to make a round edged beveler. Hopefully I'll be posting within the next week. To answer your question, probably a stitching machine, and a few more high end stamps for carving.
