In this leather craft video I make a cheek rest with extra ammo storage for my Mossberg Maverick shotgun. The whole thing is fixed onto the stock with lace I made using my Tandy lace cutter.
Construction questions or comments please leave in the comments and I'll try to respond.
Also follow me on Instagram (@roadagentleather) where there's lots of leatherwork that doesn't make it to my RU-vid channel.

I like the way you're working along, practically silent, quiet music in the background. Then out comes the mallet.

I have these on all my lever action rifles. The only difference is the strap that holds the ammo in place, i cut a slit to tuck in the ends and stitch them through. Beautiful work.

I liked the lace cutter so much that I just ordered one. Been looking for something that I could use to make consistent cordage with. The buttstock bandolier looks awesome, wish I had that kind of talent.👍

That's great to hear! You'll find the hardest part is getting the lace started (as you saw in the video). But it's awesome creating yards of good, functioning leather lace from what is essentially scraps from my waste pile. Saves you lots of money.

Great project! I made one of those for a rifle that I could not get a good cheek weld on and had never shot very accurately. Also made the cheek riser replaceable and the whole butt stock cover easily removable so the rifle bolt could be removed for cleaning the chamber. Used a little boiled linseed oil on the leather stock cover for sealer. Just like the finish on the rifle. Makes everything go down to a dull shine. Now it shoots good. Thanks for another great video sir.

do you put that on hot? or is that whats its called.i have ssome but i was using it on knife handles i was making. i have no training self trained by you tube
@kobudo
@kobudo Год назад
@@chrhaddenThat’s just what the product is called. Boiled linseed oil is a favorite finish for a lot of woodworking. Just wipe it on in a thin layer with a rag, wipe off the excess. Repeat as necessary. It’ll soak into wood nicely, I’ve never tried it on leather though.
@chrhadden
@chrhadden Год назад
@@kobudo ok i thought you were saying to put it on leather. it worked great for the knife handles i made from oak
@kobudo
@kobudo Год назад
@@chrhadden It looks like that’s what OP was saying. I always use neatsfoot oil on leather for conditioning after dyeing, and topcoat it with a 50/50 mix of water and acrylic resolene, myself. I’m not saying BLO won’t work on leather, just that I’ve never tried it and I don’t know what the result would be like.

I designed and made one for my shotgun a couple years back. I had the hardest time figuring out the correct spacing for the .12 ga shells. I used paracord for the string. It works very well, however the brass on the shotgun shells has turned green from the chemicals in the leather.
@minerblue9641
@minerblue9641 Год назад
I hear you about the brass turning green. A "light" coat of clear nail polish, paint, flotrol, or something on the brass and it should stop corroding(on the leather may not work well). Or don't store the ammo in the cartridge loops unless you're going to use the ammo soon. If you don't push the shot shells all the way into the loops they won't corrode. The leather only touches plastic. Thats the good thing about shot shells. Otherwise by my experience it takes a while for brass to start corroding when its in contact with leather. Maybe a couple of weeks (depending on the environmental conditions) and you may see corrosion starting. Therefore it should be safe to leave the brass touching leather a few days or a few hours.
