Making a Magnetic IWB Holster Leather Working ASMR

In this leathercraft video, I'm circling back on the "magnetic retention" concept again for this Smith & Wesson 3rd generation 3913 leather holster. In general, IWB is not my preferred carry method; but it comes in handy and is sometimes the only option. (pocket or shoulder holster is my favorite.)
The stamps used on this piece:
Hidecrafter PG007
Barry King Barker/Veiner
Craftool 347
My laser is an xTool P2
Below is a link for saving a few bucks purchasing a P2 direct from xTool. I was given this code to pass on to my viewers when I first received the the laser. Hopefully it still works:

@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather 9 месяцев назад
Thanks! Adobe Illustrator for creating the designs and making .stl files. It's a paid subscription (I'm a professional graphic designer so already had it). Inkscape is a free web-based option that seems good. I used Lightburn when I had my Creality machines. However, Xtool has their Creative Space app and I've been using that since I got their P2 laser. I don't think it has as many features as Lighburn, but it's free and obviously interfaces with their machines well.

@rumplefourskin6775
@rumplefourskin6775 8 месяцев назад
Is the reason you wet it with saddle soap because it gets it ready for tooling and gets rid of the soot from the laser cutter in one step?
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather 8 месяцев назад
It's an old trick I learned. The saddle soap helps lubricate the leather fibers: This makes carving with a swivel knife easier (if you're using one) and helps make the leather more pliable, which results in better stamp impressions. It also slows down the drying a bit. But it's something definitely not everyone does.

@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather 10 месяцев назад
Thanks! It's just like regular casing. I let it sit in the bag for a few hours, then take it out. When the leather starts to turn back to it's original color start the tooling.

@TexHoss1
@TexHoss1 10 месяцев назад
On your drill press punching them holes, try using a finish nail. It will poke the holes without the leather getting all caught up like it does in the grooves of a drill bit. Edges will burnish easier for you too if you burnish them first & then dye. Not saying you way don't work because it does, but for me it seems harder to get them burnished if I dye first.
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather 10 месяцев назад
Thanks! I used to chuck an awl blade in the press and poke the holes that way. But I prefer the drill bit actually removing the material as it just makes it easier to get the needles through all that glued material.

I can only assume the laser saves time but do you have any cons? I.e. harder to stitch or dye?
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather 10 месяцев назад
For me it's less about time-save and more about precision and repeatability. The stacks of leather I had to cut to create both the welt and the toe plug that held the magnets would be near impossible to do otherwise (for me anyway). No effect on stitching and dyeing. In fact, you can actually laser cut stitch holes . . . . something I'll be showing in an upcoming video. The cons: There's the scorched edge and the soot to deal with. There's also the issue that you may generally waste more leather than hand-cutting or using a clicker press: You have to fit the leather into the machine somehow; which necessitates sectioning off your hide into smaller pieces. I've found this results in more unused material getting thrown into the scrap bin.
