This video demonstrates my process of making a leather travel journal with a pen lock closure. The pattern for this item is available on my website:
I start off by cutting the pattern into individual pattern pieces. Then I demonstrate the entire assembly process, from cutting out the leather, to burnishing and sewing.

► LEATHER SUPPLIERS
Wickett & Craig - I typically order their "Tooling/Holster/Carving" vegetable tanned leather. I purchase their "Standard" grade, and I request that they split it down from a thicker hide so the back is as clean as possible. I normally order 7-8 ounce for holsters, 3-4 ounce if I'm lining a holster (I build the whole thing out of 3-4 ounce), and either 3-4 or 4-5 ounce for wallets, journal covers, etc... They will allow you to purchase individual hides
Herman Oak - While I love the leather I've gotten from Wickett & Craig, I prefer the warmer coloring of natural Herman Oak. Unfortunately, H.O. requires you to buy leather in bulk from the tannery, and buying from distributors can be hit & miss. Springfield Leather sells "Herman Oak Premium Belt Bend", so I’ve been using this lately.
The Leather Guy - I don't have a lot of experience with this leather, but the "Artisan's Choice" leather I've used has been very nice. The coloration is similar to Wickett & Craig. The thing I really like about The Leather Guy's website is that nearly every single hide shown on their site is a listing for the actual hide you'll be buying, complete with photos and a description of blemishes for that particular hide. Very cool that they do that!
District Leather - I've never personally ordered from them, but I've heard good things about their leather.
Acadia Leather - I've never purchased from here either, but I've also heard good things about their leather.
Horween Leather - At the risk of sounding repetitive, here's another I've never ordered from, but their leather is very well known.
Weaver Leathercraft - Most of what I order from weaver is buckles and tools, but they also sell leather.

I do have a problem when it comes to edging anything under 3 oz. I use a #1, I forgot the name of the company of the edger. Ranch tool something like that. They come with five removable heads. They work great for the money. Great job, I purchased the acrylic pattern of the journal that you are doing. I hope it comes half as nice as yours. Jim

Thank you Pablo - the round knife does an okay job at skiving, but I've seen some people use Japanese style leather knives to skive and do a super nice job of it. I need to add one of those to my collection one of these days. Take care, and thanks for watching!

Barry King 0, 1, 2. Nigel recommended them. They work really well. The 0 works on 3-4 oz like a dream on granite surface. Flesh side first, then grain side.

I'd like one with just the pocket for Field Notes on both sides. I'd never use the credit card slots. Love the pen lock.

Haha!! Me: I sure hope I don't screw this up since I can't really re-shoot this clip. I'm always afraid I'll skive the skin off my knuckles! Probably should buy a more appropriate skiving knife, but I"m too cheap. Thanks for watching! :)

It is great 2 C U do other things besides Holsters. I just made something similar for my journal, but I like 2 carve so I carved a 3d tree face into the Front and back covers. By the way I only do custom leather so sometimes it's nice 2 do 4 me. I am also in the great state of TEXAS. GOD'S BLESSINGS LEATHER BROTHER ✝️⚾ 🙃

Wow! So much inspiration! Thank you. Never got the idea of burnishing leather...what product was that you applied before slicking? I might give it a try (that and using a sander/dremel is genius! Must try this as well! It looks so clean!)
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 5 лет назад
Thank you! I used Gum Tragacanth to help slick the edges, but there's lots of different chemicals out there, but Gum Trag is all I've really used. Just beware that Gum Trag will block dye penetration, so be sure you only apply it after you've dyed your edges. Edge painting products are also popular, but I've never liked them. I don't recall exactly what I did in this video, but I typically slick with water first and hand burnish it (to avoid burning the edge from too much heat). They I dye the edge if I'm dying the product - it's easier to apply the dye if the edges have been slicked first. Then I'll burnish with either Gum Trag or a 50/50 mixture of beeswax and parrafin and my drill press burnisher. Then polish the edge with canvas or denim.

@@AdamsLeatherWorks they are incredibly sharp, designed for light weight leather and they feel great in your hand. I would recommend starting with a number 2. They are made and sold by a omish guy. There are a couple of RU-vid reviews.

What are you using for CAD? My best bet right now is LibreOffice but that doesn't let me curve any edges on my patterns
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 4 года назад
I use Adobe Illustrator for my patterns. I've heard good things about Inkscape and have it installed on my laptop that controls my laser printer, but only use it for last-minute edits while I'm in the shop. Otherwise I prefer to use Adobe Illustrator. Here's a video that shows some feature comparisons (not affiliated with this guy in any way - just thought it might be helpful). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R68ugh7SVM4.html

Will a 12" x 24" piece of leather be enough to make this project?

Yes - that should work fine. Depending on how you lay out the pieces, it will take roughly 10" x 20" of leather.

just me, but what is the point if you don't talk to the people you are doing this for??
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 5 лет назад
Is it a necessity for someone to verbally narrate the process before the information can become useful? Diresta, Make it Extreme, Laura Kampf, Craftsmangus, Hahns Atelier, etc. - none of them speak, but by watching their process, I've picked up a lot of great tips & techniques. All that aside, I just enjoy making videos and if they help just one person along the way, then I'd call that a success. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to buying a quality microphone so I can narrate future videos. Thanks for watching!
