Burning Leather and Making a Journal Cover!

I made a leather journal cover for the Leuchtturm1917 Medium A5 using oil tan pull up leather I purchased last year on a Black Friday sale at Springfield Leather. I start off by quickly sketching the basic design, then I roughed out the pattern before (off camera) refining the pattern in Adobe Illustrator. Then I cut out the design on my laser cutter and assembled the project. This was a really fun project, and it was nice to make something for myself for a change.

► LEATHER SUPPLIERS
Wickett & Craig - I typically order their "Tooling/Holster/Carving" vegetable tanned leather. I purchase their "Standard" grade, and I request that they split it down from a thicker hide so the back is as clean as possible. I normally order 7-8 ounce for holsters, 3-4 ounce if I'm lining a holster (I build the whole thing out of 3-4 ounce), and either 3-4 or 4-5 ounce for wallets, journal covers, etc... They will allow you to purchase individual hides
Herman Oak - While I love the leather I've gotten from Wickett & Craig, I prefer the warmer coloring of natural Herman Oak. Unfortunately, H.O. requires you to buy leather in bulk from the tannery, and buying from distributors can be hit & miss. Springfield Leather sells "Herman Oak Premium Belt Bend", so I’ve been using this lately.
The Leather Guy - I don't have a lot of experience with this leather, but the "Artisan's Choice" leather I've used has been very nice. The coloration is similar to Wickett & Craig. The thing I really like about The Leather Guy's website is that nearly every single hide shown on their site is a listing for the actual hide you'll be buying, complete with photos and a description of blemishes for that particular hide. Very cool that they do that!
District Leather - I've never personally ordered from them, but I've heard good things about their leather.
Acadia Leather - I've never purchased from here either, but I've also heard good things about their leather.
Horween Leather - At the risk of sounding repetitive, here's another I've never ordered from, but their leather is very well known.
Weaver Leathercraft - Most of what I order from weaver is buckles and tools, but they also sell leather.

Hi! I just found this video on my search for branding on black leather. I am very, very new to this and I thought it was super cool that you are in Texas too! Or at least that is what the brand logo says. I drew a design for a friend on a bracelet with her name, butterflies and flowers. I just can’t see the design very well because it’s like black on black. I was thinking of rubbing acrylic paint or something to see if it would show up better, but I figured I needed to search you tube for advice before I screwed it up. Thank you for the video. Thank you! Are you referring to pyrography? I haven’t tried that yet (unless you consider laser engrave in that category). I’d be curious to know how bad it smells.

LOL - I know, right!?! I haven't used very many copper rivets. The first time I used them was maybe a year or two ago on a pair of 3-ring leather binders for work. The next time I used them was on our Christmas ornaments last year and I struggled along with the old vice's anvil surface. Thank you for watching, and you and your family stay safe as well!

Oil tanned leather doesn't burnish well. Veg tan is what you are going to want to work with. I learned that the hard way.

Veg tan is what I use for 99.999% of the products I make. Bought these oil tan hides on sale last year because I've always wanted to try it. Hides are much cheaper too, but I'll continue to use veg tan for most of what I make.

@@AdamsLeatherWorks I was able to cheat a nice look into it by loading the edges with beeswax. Apply, heat, apply, heat again etc. After a while it still gets that weird open pore look to it.

Thanks Jason - my laser is a Chinese import, sold by Rose Graphix. I think their company name is BesCutter now. I bought mine used from a local seller that used it to cut acrylic templates for quilting. Mine is a 90 watt with a 600mm x 1000mm bed. That's about 23.6" x 39.3". The only thing I wish mine had was an adjustable bed height, and maybe auto focus. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You're right - I had the Tippmann Boss for a while, but upgraded to the Cobra Class 4 after I started selling belts and experimenting with making large items like bags (where you really need two hands on the leather).

Putting a layer of painter's masking tape over the face of the leather before engraving and cutting helps cut back on unwanted burn marks and smoke stains. It does take some extra time to remove the tape though for jobs with more detailed engraving. But it looks cleaner. The extra layer of tape means you might have to mess with the power and speed a bit on the laser.

Thanks Wyatt - I typically do apply masking tape when engraving. But I've had several times where the adhesive in the tape gummed up on the surface from the laser heat. I opted on this one to leave the tape off. But you're right - masking tape is generally a good idea.

Lol, good point. I do have a granite slab, but it’s probably 5/8” thick. More ideal is several inches thick, like a piece from a broken headstone. I also have a quartz slab from a sink cutout. It has a fiberglass mesh backing, and all the corners are broken from being hammered on. I was thinking about trying to build a custom bench and pour a reinforced concrete slab that’s built into the counter, but I’ve also head concrete isn’t really a good material to hammer on. Probably just need to find somewhere that makes headstones and see if I can buy a slab. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@AdamsLeatherWorks Yeah I do concrete countertops and you don't want to spend a lot of time hammering on them. I got a few end cuts of granite (1.5" thick) from a countertop maker. Combined with a poundo board, they seem to work great for for this sort of work. And I was just busting your chops on the laser; I'd have one too if I could! They seem like way too much fun.

Talk about a handy tool to have....that laser made short work of the pattern. Do you feel like it's cheating a little to use it to make the engraved pattern though? Maybe I'm just jealous. Lol.

In my opinion, it's just another tool in the toolkit. I don't typically use the laser to cut out pieces like I did in this video, but I figured I'd give it a try since the pattern was already loaded up in the machine. It's really not much different than using a sewing machine to sew instead of hand saddle stitching, or a brass stamp to make an impression in the leather instead of hand tooling it. It's similar to discussions in the woodworking community about power tools vs hand tools, or CNC machines vs more traditional methods. It's varying degrees of speed (and maybe accuracy?) vs. quality and/or intended result. You can't really tool this type of leather like you would with traditional methods on vegetable tanned leather, so the only other option would be something like pyrography, or an enormous custom brass or delrin stamp, but the amount of pressure that would be required to stamp something this large would be unrealistic. Just incase you are still frustrated by that slot - being a journal cover having a little slot for notes, receipts, and other random bits which end up in a journal is one big thing I look for in a cover. It comes in super handy to the point it's a necessity! I bought a journal cover a few months ago and ended up buying another from a different maker for that very reason.

This is the old LEATHER SMITH, I know what U mean, I have started 2 make one 4 myself but instead of using your machine I carve 3d image's in 2 both sides, but I have clients that R also keeping me busy so right now it's sitting on the side, I am binding a Bible 4 a client, actually I got in pieces and I now have it 2gether and I am setting up the covers. To be honest, I've never worked with any of the Horween leathers. I'm not sure how it would take the molding, and how stiff the resulting holster would be. If you're talking more generally about horsehide, I've made a couple holsters with it, but it's been a while.

Stop using Gum Trag. Invest in some Tokonole for edge finishing. It is the best for Veg Tan and gives a smooth edge on Oil Tan after 600 Grit Sanding.

Мне очень жаль это слышать. Это просто инструмент в наборе инструментов. Это не всегда целесообразно использовать, но вариантов нанесения графического изображения на этот тип кожи не так много. Спасибо за Ват...
