This is a fully mechanical LEGO clock... better than last time's one (that was a disaster). It has a pendulum and escapement mecahnism and I could definitely do a part 2 if you guys wanted. If you enjoyed, please leave a like, and subscribe to not miss any content!

I'm honestly shocked at this point that Lego hasn't made official sets like this by now. How awesome would it be to get some simple mechanical devices like this that you get to actually build before you use? Talk about an amazing way to teach kids about how things work! Until such time though, keep making awesome videos like this!
@puzzLEGO
@puzzLEGO 3 года назад
yeah, LEGO definitely has an opportunity to teach kids mechanical principles and get them interested in engineering from a young age. I hope these videos can teach my young audience about simple mechanisms, trial and error, mechanical advantage, problem solving e.t.c
@thebravegallade731

the main problem with a proper pendulum clock is the weight... but no real reason they can't make a quartz clock to teach them about gear ratios
@ArcNeoMasato
@ArcNeoMasato 3 года назад
@@thebravegallade731 I mean, I feel like with sets in a line about this stuff, they could either make some special parts, or just include a few things that aren't Lego, since the point is to make a working thing you then use.

There are actually „lego education“ sets designed for schools. When i was a kid we got one for Christmas. There are instructions for building an actual clock mechanism (even though it worked terribly, it still showed how it worked). There were even pneumatic and electric add-ons you could buy
@pbjwizard

with the gears coming out of the sides like that, you could do minutes and hours as separate modules and have them all run off the same driver
@puzzLEGO
@puzzLEGO 2 года назад
that would be cool, but in part 2 I just designed a mechanism where the hour and minute hand run separately off the same axle and I want it to only have 1 face

I'm curious to know how pendulum clocks are able to run for days without needing to be wound again. The weight seems to fall pretty steadily. If you do a part 2, I'd love to see you touch on that
@puzzLEGO
@puzzLEGO 2 года назад
Yes so basically you gear up as much as possible so every rotation of the axle the weight is connected to leads to as many rotations of the escape wheel as possible, the reason why I didn’t do more was because it created too much friction so the weight was too light to turn the axle. I’ll fix it in part 2
@noahdiluca9857
@noahdiluca9857 2 года назад
I’m guessing that’s why a lot of grandfather clocks are as tall as a person lol so the weight has farther to fall. Also making it heavier would give it more potential energy when wound up

IIRC real clocks have way more efficient escapements, and often have pulleys that apply more force with less verticle distance.

Okay, challenge proposal. Do this: - make a grandfather clock (doesn’t need to be a 1 to 1 replica of a real one, that would be too insane) - In big 2 meter tall would be interesting. -make the clock show time correctly (that’s gonna be the most difficult part about it) -propose the finished product to Lego Ideas.

Great idea and build! I think there's a possible improvement in the anchor and escape wheel connection. From what I can see in the video, it appears that the anchor does a great job pacing the escape wheel, but the escape wheel is only pushing the anchor in one direction, and thus driving the pendulum only have the period (going from right to left). This is also probably why it stopped so easily at first. Doubling up the anchor connections (like in actual pendulum clocks) would make the movement of the pendulum much more reliable... Thanks for making this video, because it stimulates our creative thinking and makes me want to tinker with the concept too =))
@puzzLEGO
@puzzLEGO 2 года назад
That’s a good idea, my next clock which I’m designing now could probably fit that, but I’m using a heavier weight anyway so there shouldn’t be any issues with the escape wheel not having enough force to push the pendulum

I think the trickiest part would be to make the minute hand tick to the next number after the second hand does a full rotation. I don't mean do little ticks as the second hand goes along, I mean the minute hand stays put until the second hand does a full rotation and then it ticks to the next number. That's how clocks used to be but everyone does it the lazy way now.

Full grandfather clock that is over 30hrs per wined up, only Lego. Weights and all. They use to make Lego weights that went in the boat hulls. Seriously though, 3 weights, pully system, 30hrs+ per winding, hour, minute and second hand and if you go fancy a case so your not using double sided tape to stick to the wall. Would be epic af, I'm only missing a couple parts you used. Might have to buy some legos. Lol
