Just finished Lore Valhalla and it was so much more enjoyable then Lore Olympus. Sif is a much more interesting and to be honest, tolerable, protagonist to follow compared to Persephone. You did a great job capturing the feel of the orginal novel and telling a complete story is such a short frame!
Webtoon is going to steal your comic if you did, a lot of the artists can't even sell merch because they basically sold their comic to webtoon and aren't getting paid well. (:
I like the silhouettes of Lore Valhalla more than Lore Olympus. Thor x Sif is my fave ship now. On the other hand your Loki lowkey reminds me of Beastboy.
i think lore valhalla being a one-shot rly helped it feel much better than lore olympus as a myth adaptation to me, a lot of myths are just quick isolated stories with characters easily recognizeable through the deities' place in the zeitgeist and archetypes they might embody, so a one-shot based on a specific story makes a lot more sense than.... whatever lore olympus decided to do trying to stitch things together plus the simplified character designs worked very well with valhalla bc there's not that many named characters, meanwhile with olympus the more characters got added the harder it became to tell them apart by anything other than color (and sometimes even then). also loki's ripped hat looking like horns was a fun visual reference
For some reason i always assumed Lore Olympus was drawn by adding the colours first then adding the lineart(Like how i draw). The whole erasing inks after drawing everything sounds so hard
I am a fellow background hater, well more i hate having to draw a background in every panel, so I just do what i like to call introductory backgrounds, if there's a new area a scene takes place in, i draw one or two background panels to establish wjere they are to avoid confusion for the reader, and it doesn't burn me out because i can put a ton of detail into just one panel and then focus on character which is what i prefer
thats a great approach! i feel like manga does this a ton where it starts with an establishing shot before switching to blank/minimal backgrounds for the dialogue panels
Quick question: wouldn't "Lore Asgard" as a title have made a bit more sense, if the one shot is set in the world of the Norse gods? Because Valhalla is supposed to be the Norse afterlife where the deceased go, as far as I'm aware 🤔
i actually debated this for a while but chose valhalla because i felt it better rivaled Olympus' "pinnacle-ness" despite being the afterlife + title wise it just had a better ring to it
2:15 Gu-wah-sh hope this helps >__< irl paints similar to oils but quick drying and cheaper, later adapted to digital because of how many people liked it traditionally
about the lineart. instead of easring it, it can just be recolors as the characters colors, by locking the layer of the lineart and using the color. or just making the lineart layer invisible xD
I am a huge Greek myth geek, but I also love Norse, Japanese, Celtic, Egyptian and Indigenous mythologies. The fact that you made a parody comic is tremendous ! I would LOVE to read it !
This was so good! Absolutely loved Lore Valhalla, it was quite cute! Really liked the panelling, and loved the characters! Odin and Sif were my favourite designs. Also, the part where Thor rips Loki's hat in half and it turns into horns, really tickled me. Honestly, this was such an interesting exercise! Lore Olympus has a super nice aesthetic despite all its flaws, so the idea of doing a parody is so cool! You really nailed it in my opinion. I'm surprised the whole thing was only 35 pages long with everything going on. I know you said the ending was a bit abrupt, but I think it worked well. Also gouache is pronounced goo-ah-sh lol
You did an amazing job with the comic. And you managed to understand loki's character perfectly (because he's essentially just a mega-ultra-supreme troll).
@arandomthingintheabyss2062 eh, some jokes are overdone, but the one thing i did appreciate was how easily a seraph bodied Adam. He was not even fighting and still won. Seraphim are the most powerful angels after all.
Haha I knew as soon as you mentioned Sif as your main character that it'd be the story where she loses her hair-- poor Sif! I do think it's interesting that you went with Sif and Thor as stand-ins for Persephone and Hades though. I had always thought that a Lore Olympus parody of Norse Mythology would feature Idunn and Bragi, but perhaps they aren't well-known enough. Idunn's famous story is also in the Skáldskaparmál, where she is kidnapped and then rescued due to her keeping the apples of immortality for the aesir. (Loki is, as always, involved on both sides of the issue)
I finished Lore Valhalla and it was really good. I enjoyed reading it and if you ever tried to make more comic oneshots on myths I’d be more then thrilled to read 😄
I read all of Lore Valhalla, and I really liked it! The only complaints I have are really only due to the nature of it being a one shot. Like, okay, Sif and Thor are just, in a relationship now, okay, I can roll with this. It genuinely would’ve been so much better if it was longer and more plot points were able to develop for longer. But I get the feeling of just wanting to make a one shot and just be done with it, very relatable. Overall, it’s a solid 7.5/10. Love all of the ideas presented, it really hooked me in. I likely am going to check out your other work because of just how good of an impression I got from it. Keep up the good work 👍
yo thank you, i agree with all of your points- there was so much to potentially expand on, explore, or pace out if i didnt limit this to a one shot (which i also appreciate you acknowledging) but glad it still stuck the landing despite those restrictions
Huge respect for stepping into the shoes of a creator you didn't fully agree with. I LOVE Love Valhalla because I'm a huge fan of Norse myth parodies &...it's a really nice little comic. Very fun. Well done all around!
Ugh, I love this so much. Now I kind of want to make a series like this. I love Lore Valhalla much more than Lore Olympus. I did like the beginning of Lore Olympus, and this really feels like it captured the charm the original story had, with it's own little twist. I really do get sad when I think of how Rachel's passion for LO clearly declined over the story.
Despite your impressive and meticulous appraoch to replicating the style LO, due to personal biases, the point that bought you the most street cred is how you have a Spaceman Spiff graphic in your background. Despite the spoilers, I'll probably check out your comic.
@@crownobsidian It was an enjoyable read, every named character had an arc, you resolved all relationships, be they romantic, filial, fraternal, etc. Nothing was left hanging. I can't speak to it's effectiveness as a parody, having not read Lore Olympus. However, going by the open communication, support, and utter lack of interpersonal drama between Sif and Thor, I can only assume Lore Olympus features betrayals, manipulations, and misunderstandings galore, and likely a very protracted plot. Good job getting to the point in a pithy manner!
Lore Valhalla was super charming. I liked how you managed to capture the vibe of the original lore Olympus comic 's style while still retaining some of your own flare in the drawing so the comic still manages to stand apart from lore Olympus. The play with the Sif head shave myth was well incorporated story-wise. Nicely done! :D Looking forward to your new stuff, since I'll probably subscribe now.
I read Lord Valhalla. And I gotta say it's great because iray red Lord Olympus. And I like seeing the North gods. Reimagine. Thanks again for the credible work you made.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This is fun. Is making Demeter hatable not because of her trying to get her daughter back but just making her a toxic yuri satan because people won't like her anyway after LO and other stuff a good idea like this or should this have stayed in the drafts
i did pause this to read lore valhalla and i was blown away by how good it was! i read LO a long time ago and i remember it took me forever to really care about the characters, whereas with LV i was engaged very early. could it be just the pacing of a long comic vs. a short one? maybe, but i think getting your readers engaged, especially with your characters, is really important to do early. i thought the story was really good and the ending is quite cute
This idea sounds really interesting, but I don’t think I can take it seriously since my fathers name is Tor (whiteout the h but still pronounced the same) and Thor in this comic also kinda looks like him.
I love whwn p[eople re-write it for fun or seriously. Ima be happy to check this out. and in all seriousness still for greek lore rekindled is doing good LOL
my fav part of this is that, because you already made Lore Valhalla, Rachel can't. the art style isn't whats wrong with her comic (the art style is actually why I suspect it got to the heights it reached) critics of her work don't want her touching another mythos ever again because of her story-telling.
I really respect how you put yourself in the author's shoes and it was really intresting to see what kind of process goes into the comics. Lore Valhalla was a definite fun read! I much prefer how Sif was presented compared to Persephone
I'm wildly impressed with Lore Valhalla! I know its not good to compare but In my opinion its way better than lore olympus. I enjoyed it way more. I couldn't finish lore olympus because of how incosistent the character designs were! Their noses would change shapes, and their bodies would too. This annoyed me SO MUCH! Just trying to read through it made my veins pop with rage. I kept asking myself "Is that supposed to be persephone or someone else?". I really appreciate how consistent your characters were. In each frame you can tell who it is, and you did a great job at not making them bland and you didnt make the only difference between characters be what color they were. One more thing I truly appreciate is the fact that Sif acts like a grown adult, and Thor doesn't act like her father. Thats another problem I really had with lore olympus. Persephone acted like she couldve been his daughter! It made the romance between those two so weird and it put a really bad taste in my mouth. But you did a great job with Sif and Thor. One thing I would say is the jump from Sif and Thor meeting at the bar to being in a relationship was quite a quick jump. I wish it was better explained that there was a bit of a time skip, however that doesn't take away from the enjoyment I had from this. Thank you for making this! You did a great job. You are an amazing comic artist. :)
Oh my gods i didn't even watch the video yet but i already love you for making this LMAO Edit: i just read it and i genuinely had a few chuckles at it this was great
the comic!! it was so wholesome omg 😭 im glad i clicked on this video and read it. also, watching the video kiiinda makes me wanna try making a short webcomic for funsies too 🙈
read the comic got opions on it 1 AMAZING 2 wayyyyy better then lore olympus (sorry rachel) 3 loki is odins blood brother (they made a blood pact) but not bad on the norse myth 4 i love the art style 5 god that comic was good for a short comic the character are so good you legit feel bad for some of the characters (not loki lil annoying turd). 10/10
@@crownobsidian would you ever consider doing more with the idea make it a little longer because the idea has a lot of potential without the mellow drama of LO
lore olympus has a hot mess of a story and hot mess for characters, but GOD DAMN rachel ATE THAT ART DOWNNN i legit shed a tear like i gotta get my skill up FOR REAL, comics are so daunting LOLL
Ah nah I ain't reading the comic on Patreon, which makes it blocked! I'd rather read it somehow else, like videos about it or videos reading or comic dub dramas on RU-vid (or even pdfs or like in digimon website manga digimon dreamers on how it's easy to read and look up)... I don't want you to associate with JetStarfish, who promoted his mod through Patreon and did a way worse job and there are response videos and drama. You're a way better person and you made a masterpiece. We ain't doing petty drama with insults. I'm not gonna argue. Edit: Nevermind I got it easily! No need to be passive-agressive on you now I can read it thanks! 👍 Edit 2: I might even do comic dubs if I wanted! Hope you're okay with this. Gonna do it one day :)
its a very last of us inspired story where 2 survivors must travel across a frozen apocalyptic world filled with bandits and monsters in order to stop a powerful faction from unleashing a new weapon-- i have a video similar to this one covering how i made it and funded it on kickstarter!
@@crownobsidian yeah I have a comic too about DC and marvel inspired characters set in a 1920s in a fictional country and a continent close to America and asia so I can relate
Sorry to ask this, but was Lore Olympus always bad or did it just get bad over time? Because quite a lot of people were praising it when it first came out, but now almost every video about is talking about how bad it is. Not saying they, or you, are wrong I just was shocked by it because I quite liked it at first and I’m wondering where it started going wrong.
it was the slow burn pacing with zero pay off for me. ive only read volume 1 (the first 25 episodes) so its a limited take but i felt like there was no agency towards anything- scenes would just "happen", conversations had little substance, nothing impacted the story or how character arcs would progress...it all read like filler that was trying to stretch the episode length out (in order to hit that weekly posting quota)
@@crownobsidian Okay. Well, I will admit I started noticing a lot of subplots that were clearly going somewhere they were just taking far too long and I guess I do see the other problems. I mean, I did think how they reimagined Fertility Goddesses as these all powerful, but Vulnerable beings because of their connection to Gaea and how she was used by Uranus was creative. Reimagining the cycle in Greek myth where gods would overthrow each other and Persephone’s role as fertility goddess in it.
@@crownobsidian I guess it just really upset me because it made me question my own judgement. See I want to be a comic writer, but the fact that I didn’t pick up anything wrong with how the story started or did notice them just didn’t know they were real flaws… am I not cut out for this?
@@insectostrich4407 you are cut out for comic writing, dont let my gripes with LO tell you otherwise! LO still is a super expansive story interwoven with a huge cast of characters and thats an impressive thing to juggle...its just done in a way that i dont personally connect with based on stories that i like and gravitate towards no story is gonna be perfect and win over everyone
@@crownobsidian Thanks, but just so you know it’s not just you. It’s literally every video that talks about Lore Olympus. Either calling sexist or feminist propaganda or saying the characters are terrible. Which is a shame because I liked the story at first, but I guess I did start noticing things taking way too long, some things just not adding up or certain main characters doing questionable/stupid things I guess. So maybe I had suspicions, but do I have poor judgment for needing a second opinion to know it was a bad story?
Bro somehow made a parody of a trashy webtoon comic and somehow made it more enjoyable and well written than the original slop. Good job, really, I'm impressed
Yeah in immediately reading this Okay it was pretty good but the pacing was confusing, like sif and thor just kissed really fast even though they only knew eachother for what seemed like a couple of days, and sif thought thor was mad at her? For being bald? Scuse me?
It was a fun comic, but it's pretty clear you weren't sure what to do with such a limited number of pages. You missed all the emotional beats. I had no idea when Sif and Thor got in a relationship in the first place. When Loki was first mocking Sif for being with him, I was assuming he was doing the immature thing where you see your brother with a girl and tease him by calling her his girlfriend. Was half-expecting Sif to get flustered and embarrassed to have her crush lampshaded like that, but even when she just seemed mad at Loki I simply assumed that was it. No one was more surprised than me when they kissed on Thor's couch later-when did that relationship even _happen?_ Had no idea Loki felt so jealous of Thor that it would escalate into the hair cutting incident. Someone just tells him Thor's ale is doing well and he scowls. It's not like his position as an entertainer is jeopardized in any way. Maybe even just a single line about how people would rather talk Thor's ear off instead to find out how Sif made it could have helped. Honestly, if Odin _had_ told Thor he was proud (or close to it), that would've actually given Loki a stronger cue to get so pissed off. Without Sif's hair, no Aesir Ale. No Aesir Ale, Thor's back from hero to zero again. It was really unnecessary for Loki to talk like Sif being bald destroyed their relationship. Judging by the fact Thor has angrily come to Sif's defense, they're _obviously_ still together. Loki really should've just stuck to the work rivalry angle. There's an early panel with a pink background where Thor suddenly goes all blushy at Sif. Why. She says she doesn't like a drink and then "just kidding!", why does he fall for her then of all times? Did you miss a panel? If this is the story where Thor gets Mjolnir, why does he already have Mjolnir to make drinks hammered? Not as big a deal since I assume you just wanted to ensure some brand recognition? Sif's wig when she's holding it looks identical to her lost hair, frayed/chopped ends at the top and all. She could've just put her original hair back on if that's all it took, I guess? Lore Olympus deserves a parody comic, but this isn't a parody. You didn't satirize the format in any way, you made a genuine attempt to mimic the art style and create a similar story. Which is great. Making a referential/homage comic to LO is fine. Norse Mythology hasn't been as done to death as Greek mythology after all! But even just for an experimental oneshot, I spent a lot of my time reading it very confused. Even Freya wasn't at all recognizable until the other characters mentioned her by name, and a portion of this video was dedicated to you saying it was important their identities didn't get erased by modern fashion. Loki keeping the ripped hat on (though I'm confused how anyone would rip a hat that way) to resemble the Marvel Loki horns was a nice touch. Please keep working on future comics. Practice makes perfect. Also, Poseidon briefly has a beard in Lore Olympus, but he's made to shave it off pretty quickly. Not surprised you missed it, nbd. Rachel Smythe is addicted to her clean-shaven guys.
Your take on this "parody" was sad, to say the least. Your anatomy and body proportions are so off, your line work is sloppy, and the dialogue is just boring. It's obvious that you put no effort into this project because it just looks like you set a transparent layer of Smythe's OG art hand just hastily traced over it. If you're going to do any other similar parodies in the future, at least have an original take on the source material; Smythe understood this and actually put some effort into her passion project. Which is why it was so successful, even if it generates your own personal disdain, it still keeps peoples' attention. Something you obviously lack.
