The small hole in the side of the needle allows for the needle end and the masking to flow flawlessly ... if the hole isn't there a vacuum is formed preventing the masking fluid from coming out and the only way it will flow out is by using the plunger of which is difficult to judge and can suddenly shoot out as you try to judge the pressure.. I've tried it without a hole and it shoots out and requires two hands to operate
