I was asked on the Angel Wing Designs Facebook Group how I made up the hi-start I used for launching the Micro Gentle Lady, so here is a short video showing how I did it. 1/8" rubber strip available from The Vintage Model Company by the metre: www.vintagemodelcompany.com/1-8-f-a-i-tan-flight-rubber.html A following video will share some things I've learned from my hi-starts.
I bought a kit a few years ago and didn't realise everything is electric now but I finally got around to buying the stuff to make a hi start and the tips you gave about using the heat shrink tubing was gold 🥇🥇, without a doubt you saved me from a school boy error but as they say you learn something new everyday, thanks
One of my commercial hi-starts uses the same method, so I made one similar as they work really well 👍 I'm sure your toilet paper tube works well too 😁 I'm about to order more rubber so I can make up some longer hi-starts as this one is a little short, and will have one with 1/8" rubber, a second with 3/32" rubber and a third with 1/16" rubber, so I can experiment with which works best for different micro/small gliders.
@@RCSoaringUK I use "snap swivels" from the fishing department at Walmart to connect the various rubber and fishing line parts. I tie the swivels to the line and the rubber, then use the safety-pin-style end to clip them together. The toilet paper tube is currently a wadded up Gordian knot. I'm trying your method this year!
Thank you! this is very helpful. I hope to get the Pug DLG one day and add a tow hook. I look forward to your video showing how to add a tow hook and also where to add it (in relation to the C o G). Thanks again :)
@@RCSoaringUK that's good to know, looking forward to seeing your conclusions. Just a quick question. What were the lengths of the rubber and the fishing line for this project?
Nice Job Carl, I was looking through your videos the other day and noticed how many views your glider videos are getting!! The one is at 15k views, i think you've found a niche!! That's excellent to be getting views like that👍😄
You even made time to watch a little video about making a hi-start 👍 Thanks Ian. Yes that video just exploded. I think it's because it encapsulated everything about flying a glider in minimal lift. It was one of those flights that the breeze was just right, hitting the little slope at just the right angel and having the perfect glider for those conditions. That flight was probably one of my most memorable because it was ridiculous where I was finding lift 😍
You're absolutely right there Ken, and I think people do enjoy seeing a simple 'honest' video, and that's why I've been enjoying your videos. Too many videos out there are far too staged. This is why my channel is RC Soaring Diaries as that's all it is, a diary of what I do and people seem to be liking it. Looking forward to seeing what you do this spring and summer 👍 Thanks for chipping in Ian too, your channel is another one I enjoy because I view it as a diary of you 'exploits' 😁
Thanks Carl. I have asked you in your other videos how you made the hi start but just came across this. How Long for the rubber? How long for the nylon line? Please?. Thanks Pete
The rubber is 1/8" or 3/32" as used for rubber powered models. I've used 7.5m rubber with 30m of line. You can get 1/8" rubber from www.vintagemodelcompany.com/1-8-f-a-i-tan-flight-rubber.html by the meter. Have fun when you have a go, and go easy on the tension when you launch. The wings on these micro gliders will fold 😲
