Making a Modern Lamp with Inductive Charging | I Like To Make Stuff

I wanted to make a new bedside lamp and I also wanted to charge all of my devices, so I made a modern lamp with inductive charging! Using some walnut, an LED matrix, a lamp kit, and a wireless charger I solved this common problem, check it out!

I'm using some walnut for this side table lamp because it's super pretty and I want this lamp to stand out. I tried to use Fusion 360 to design something, but I decided to take the wood and just start cutting. While I tried to be bold in the design, I made sure that the lamp was functional. I found a piece of walnut that was beautifully figured that I want to be the flat upright. The base had to hold the round inductive charger and possibly the small micro-controller to power the LED matrix reading light.
I discovered that I really like a slight 7 degree angle for the upright, so I used my miter saw to cut those bevels. While the lamp looked nice, it was still very angular and boxy. Using a flexible steel ruler, I placed two nails at either end of the board and pushed the ruler against them. This creates a traceable curve that I repeated on the opposite side. The jigsaw made quick work of those curvy cuts and now the lamp is ready for some routing!
Naturally our lamp would include more than just a simple lamp and bulb kit. The inductive charger plays a heavy role, but I want it to remain hidden away in the base topped with a simple leather patch. The downward-facing LED reading light also had to be recessed up into the walnut overhang. I could design a pocket cut for the CNC and let the robot cut these areas, but instead, I used my palm router to carve in these spaces.
The charger pocket was dual-layered, one for the charger puck itself, and another offset shelf to hold the leather disc. The LED matrix had a similar pocket but I added a deeper space in the back to hold the controller wiring. It also got an offset shelf to hold a piece of frosted acrylic to help diffuse the reading light. Once those were done, I cut a channel on the back of the upright to hide away all of the lamp's wiring.
At this point, the walnut base was ready to fully assemble. I used glue, some brad nails (as a temporary hold) and some dowels to assemble all of the elements together. At the top of the base, I mounted another block of walnut to hold the actual lamp kit hardware, it is lamp after all. I dry-fit the components and the wiring before I permanently fixed anything in place. The inductive charger and dyed leather cover fit perfectly into the bottom pocket and the LED matrix and frosted acrylic sat nicely inside the reading light overhang. I ran all the wiring through the pockets and down the rear of the lamp before glueing all of the electronic elements in place. It is now time to do a little programming on the ESP module mounted in the base to control the reading light.
This may be kinda scary for someone just looking to make a bedside light, but it is really quite manageable. We need a micro-controller because the LEDs need to be told what to do. They are RGB meaning that they can be configured to be any color, they can fade or blink or ru na custom animation. This is where the controller comes in. I am using the ESP8266 which is small and has onboard wifi and bluetooth connectivity.
I am able to treat the matrix as a Phillip Hue light bulb and use the Alexa app to control it. I may add more custom animations or color combos later on, but for now I am really happy with the light being the right color temperature and it fading on and off. The diffusion material works really well and it gives off a soft glow so I can read without bothering my wife.
I set out to make a nice looking lamp that is also a reading light and charges my devices. This lamp accomplished each one of those tasks! I am extremely happy with this project, especially because I could make it up with minimal design planning.

Guys you are complete legends I love what you do and can’t get enough of it. I love this kind of stuff and I have since I was around 8 and now I am 16 still loving the same thing. You guys are like a series that I can’t for the next episode. I am working on a modern desk lamp that can fold up, be charged therefore it’s wireless and when folded up it will look like a briefcase. It’s just I have been designing this for so long and it’s a lot of work. So I can’t imagine how incredible you guys are for doing what you do. You are amazing people living legends. Thank you.

If you add an NFC sticker you can creat a spot on the lamp that when you put your phone next to open the app for the lamp via shortcuts. Or maybe sets a timer that will turn it of after a desired amount of time.

@Shadow Fexz would be really cool if it was red for low battery while charging, yellow for medium battery power then green for high battery power and fully charged. Red could be 0-39, yellow could be 40-79, green could be 80-100

You could change the channel name to “ I don’t like to plan stuff” 😂 this turned out great, I built in some sconces to our nightstands to get stuff off the top. This is a similar idea. I feel like it keeps the charger from moving around too which is awesome.

Yeah, that has actually been a really nice side effect, not having to chase the charger around the table to get it to charge correctly 👍🏼

Hey Bob, To be honest...I've learned so much over the years, from watching your channel that I decided to start my own. I've only got one simple project on it so far, but I'm just about to head back into the shed to keep working on the second. Would love any feedback you have. Thank you for the inspiration. The only thing I wish is that I'd started sooner. You're the best mate. In this project, you've spoken about LED lighting which i'm really going to have to get into soon as i need to build some lights to get better video of what I'm making. If you've ever thought about making some big over head lights, I could really use some help!!!

WLED would be a great piece of software for this for those people who don't want to code it themselves. You can flash it directly onto the ESP module and it can emulate as a HUE RGB light so you can add it to Alexa or Google Home and be able to control the brightness, color, and on off.

I've use WLED for lights on our porch, eaves (Christmas lights) and for our Christmas tree, and it works really well. The one thing I miss is Google integration, but I'm still looking into how I can do that via an MQTT server. (I have one on my NAS, but I need to hook it to Google somehow still.)

the making of the base of this reminded me a lot of your guitar building video the way you had to create a few spots for electronics and wiring was very reminiscent of the hollow body guitar build it's super interesting to me to find similar skills utilized between seemingly completely unrelated projects it shows you how much the basics in a skill like woodworking can be utilized to create such a wide variety of things I would never assume that someone that builds really nice lamps would also be able to also build high quality guitars but clearly there is a lot of overlap with the skills required for each specialty woodworking is really versatile and awesome

the fact that you were able to use a wireless charger without ripping it apart of finding out how they work and then recreating a bigger version made this project so much more feasible for me I am super confident building things with enough structural integrity to support whatever I plan for, I learned to build to hold up my bed and fish tanks, but the idea of wiring and electronics almost makes me throw up, so this was the perfect middle point for someone like me

Love the automation videos. If I were to make this myself, a few things I would do differently are: - Add a thin hard but conductive material between the leather and the charger to improve the aesthetic. - Add a small limit switch below the charger and program the Arduino to make the lights fade in / out red for 10 seconds to indicate charging. Obviously, for the last one the limit switch it would only assume that the charger is charging. Though I suppose if you could find a really small relay you could tie the limit switch into arduino, then arduino into the signal end of the relay to turn the charger on / off based on whether something is present.

I've been planning to do something similar to this, my iteration involves the lamp being built into the night stand, fully Alexa controlled, however after watching this, I've just thought of adding an Alarm Clock screen to it. Maybe a flip out one. Also been listening to your podcast with David & Jimmy, I'm only up to Episode 113, so a long way to go to catch up.
