for the car anxiety, start by just sitting in the car with her and not going anywhere, just a few minutes at first then up the time. Once they're ok with being in the can when it's in the drive way start driving for a few minutes and slowly working up. this whole process can take awhile (2month) but the slow progression is what really makes it work.

This ^ I have a beagle-mix who was _terrified_ of cars. We realized it was the engine turning on that spooked him. It took about a year of work to get him calm, and a toy after each session as reward.

Patience is key and it can take as long as it takes. Dogs don't make new neuropathways very quickly, especially from an already learned behavior, but it is possible to do. With your understanding of anxiety, I think you will be the perfect person to help Posey.

Yes! And also giving them something to do in the car (like a Kong toy with peanut butter) can also really help, provided they're not too stressed to eat. Definitely start slowly. Also going on short drives to go on a fun walk can also help them associate the car with fun.

@@LaviniaDeMortalium Yes, the sounds of a car, their wheels and machinery are similar to growling noises and we can appreciate that animals do not like growling close by particularly when they can't see the mean or potentially dangerous thing(s) doing the growling at them. Soon, though, general growth in confidence rises up to compete with fearful noise.

Dog advice: I got a puppy a few years ago, and my parents already had a dog that was a few years older by that point. We did all of the things you read about online and mentioned yourself about separating them and giving the older dog space etc. Honestly, my best advice is to begin to incorporate each dog into fun and daily activities together. Little trick sessions with treats, daily walks together and lots of positive reinforcement, if they show no food aggression then feeding them in the same room at the same time. It turned our older dog from being very dismissive of the puppy into a partner in crime almost, he now looks for my dog whenever he wants to play or do something naughty which we never thought he would, because he usually wants to sleep all the time! I think they just needed to have more time doing things together where the focus was not each other, but the activity they were doing that happened to be in the same space.

1. You look great. It was quite obvious that you had put on nice makeup and gotten yourself together at the end of the video and you looked very pretty. 2. Do you realize how much less time, energy, and emotion EVERYBODY puts into dogs than you? The fact that you care so much is the first laudable trait you display, followed closely by the time and effort you put in to identify and rectify problems. You are a lovely dog owner and you're doing every single thing you can to make your dogs' life as happy as they can be. 3. We are not out to get you. You don't need to worry so much that every detail of every video is perfect. You have just about the same number of human flaws as the rest of them, and when they show that just makes you, well, human. 4. I love your videos and I love the projects you choose and it just hurts my feelings when you can't allow yourself to be happy with your output. You do a great job and you should feel great about it.

So sorry to hear about Posie's anxiety. Have you talked to your vet about trying a thundershirt or a calming pheromone spray/room plug in? When she travels in the car does she think she's always going to the vet/back to the shelter? Sometimes short trips to fun places like the park can break the assumption that car = going to a "bad" place.

Give each dog a small towel or blanket with the other ones scent, it will help them get to know more about each other without feeling threatened. this might help with the separation anxiety as well give them something sofr with your scent on it.

I'm the same way when it comes to seasonal depression. I wouldn't say I love winter (my favourite seasons are spring and fall) but I tolerate winter well. Summer on the other hand gets me down, makes me super cranky and all around not pleasant to be around. I HATE being hot not only because of my mood but I also get heat triggered migraine type headaches You're the first person who I've ever heard say they get seasonal depression in the summer and I feel so validated in my feelings now.
@buriichibakaimouto
@buriichibakaimouto 3 года назад
My therapist brought up seasonal depression in conjunction with major depression in our last session. He said that the shorter nights and longer days tie into it, but the big part is "others are out and doing fun things and it's bright and cheery so why am I still sad?" It's a frustrating thing to deal with.

For the separation anxiety, yes - leave her alone for a few moments, while you are home... just stepping out of the room for a minute or so and extending the time you spend away over time building up till you are stepping out of the house for a few minutes, then building that up over time too.

I have introduced cats to young dogs, and Posie sounds a lot like cats I have had in personality so maybe the advice will help? I basically found that the young dog always wanted a positive interaction, but was usually too amped up to realise that the cat wanted something more chill, so I would try to make sure the puppy was a bit exhausted or tired when hanging out with the cat. A long walk or intense bit of fetch would sort of calm them down enough to interact in a low energy way, and then the more positive response from the cat would mean that they would realise over time, oh, yeah, this animal likes me more when I don't jump at them, and therefore would be less annoying to the cat. Maybe seeing if one of your parents would be able to tire Minnie out a bit before she hangs out with Posie and you would help? [I LOVE the fabric you chose, the chartreuse and blue bring out those two tones in your green hair and the print works so well for the dress!]
@KraccatiusManor
@KraccatiusManor 3 года назад
I know it sounds counterintuitive but leaving Posie alone for extended periods of time while you're still HOME is really key (but since there is now a younger dog in the house make sure the puppy isn't with you but with Posie during these "tolerance breaks" instead. Posie won't bond with a dog so much younger until she see's/comprehends that it isn't her replacement which is often why older dogs dont bond with younger dogs, NOT because of difference in temperament/age, its often shown in studies/other situations that dogs of any age can play and bond just fine. its all about the circumstances). My advice is to do these tolerance breaks WHILE you are home so Posie can still hear and smell you and she's given ample time to adjust. She might cry and it will be really hard (emotionally and when it comes to filming) but I recommend starting with 30 minutes each day for a week... Move up to an hour for 2-3 weeks... move up to 2 hours for 2-4 weeks... etc etc etc. I went through this with my mothers dog, she had 2 shih-tzus, one of which was honestly so co-dependent on her it was DEBILITATING for him. My mum is gone now, she passed away in October last year..... So I'm the new "Mum" and I had to teach him distance first after losing HER and now I'm having to teach him it to some degree with me since naturally he is now trying to form the same behavior/attachement to me. Its really difficult, especially when you're BOTH grieving. You feel like you have a pick axe right through your chest even just leaving the house when you look at their sad eyes or hear that desperation in their howl/whine/bark. But it hurts them so much more when they're dependent... They make themselves sick and deprive themselves of simple mindless joys like playing with toys or laying around chewing a bone like dogs SHOULD be able to do! Relax and have fun and enjoy their simple lives... Their entire life force becomes the owner they're dependent on and it really does poison them and the short (when you look at the big picture) life they have... Which is made even SHORTER by all the stress and anxiety that the co-dependence causes. And my mums dogs are older, the other one has health issues and I often think about how much time I even have with HER or either of them, being away from them feels like I'm wasting away the time I do have but its honestly like being a parent and making terribly difficult decisions for the great good for your child. I might be missing out on time but thats also time that these animals are learning to have true peace and calm, and I know that once it is time for them to move on, it will be a lot less terrifying for them because they wont be in a panic leaving me. They'll be able to focus on themselves and how they feel and being at peace. I might sound crazy to some people but animals are the most important thing to me, they're far more important and meaningful in this life than any human could ever be. So if I sound a bit "wooh-wooh" I hope that can be ignored and maybe you can take away something useful from my very long response here lol... Please give your puppers 14 kisses EACH from me and tell them some crazy lady in PA loves them very much!!

I second this. Worst thing you can do is seperate them and pander to the older dog's insecurity. When you walk them, walk them together, by hushing one to a seperate room you make them believe that their is something to fear. Dogs will get along fine even with a big age gap. I have an old labrador and a young cocker spaniel. She's mental and he's always been a super calm lazy thing. They get along fine, the older dog was unsure at first but walking them together, telling off the little one when she went too far. Alowing the older dog to tell her off too. An older dog may bark etc at a younger dog when the younger dog is misbehaving, this is normal and not to be discouraged, since the younger dog will learn from it. She's 4 now and he's 8 and they get along fine. I also agree that leaving the dogs alone is GOOD for them, not bad. If they're used to amusing themselves they'll be much more confident and less anxious. Then when you really need to leave (emergency hospital appointment etc) they'll cope just fine.

My family got a rescue dog at the beginning of the pandemic (yes the pup in my icon) and quite frankly it took the better part of a year for him to get used to us and to become comfortable with the idea that we weren't going to abandon him or give him up (he went through 2 or 3 foster homes before we adopted him) and while he was okay with being in the car and going to the vet he did get nervous when we brought him to a different house to visit but after a couple visits and one time where my parents stayed at the house and I took him home he seemed to get used to going to other houses to visit to wrap this rambling up my advice is sometimes dogs need time and a situation they may not enjoy being repeated for them to get used to it. Even if they get anxious in the moment in the long run its better for them to get used to the situation they don't like then have that anxiety

One thing we have done with our beagle, who is both anxious when we leave and when she’s in the car, is take her for a walk before we leave. It’s just a part of our routine that really helps. Plus it helps tire her out which helps he settle down and sleep.

I have to do this with my Maine Coon; she's rather like a dog in behavior, and she's become very codependent during the pandemic. I'm trying to do something fun with her (a walk, play) before I leave, and leave treats for her to find once I'm gone. Try to associate my leaving with her getting fun and food.

My cat is not happy about suddenly not being an "only child" and is quite grumpy. We're just trying to take it slow and keep the cat-obsessed dog somewhat distant lol

That dress is amazing, really inspired me to work on my own summer dress! It looks so beautiful on you. For dog advice: Dogs are like people and sometimes two of them will never get along, but you can do things to ease the tension. The crate is a great idea. I would get each of the dogs a crate that is their crate, make it nice and comfy for them and don't let the other one use it, it's *theirs*. Put them in separate areas so the dogs can each claim territory. Get them each their own special bowl and feed them together, but across the kitchen from each other so they don't fight over food. If this doesn't work, switch off which one gets fed first. When you feed one dog first, you're telling the other dog it's less important, so make sure not to consistently reinforce that or resentment will happen. Your first dog is showing anxiety because she is feeling threatened by the new dog. This can get bad over time. Our elderly dog had to be put on anxiety medicine (which actually helped him very much and wasn't expensive at all) when we got a new dog, but the other two dogs were able to adjust well to each other. Try to find activities they both like and do them together. Get someone else to walk the other dog on a leash and have them walk on the other side of the street so they can see each other, then graduate to walking them together. Teaching them tricks together will also work to get them comfortable with each other. Just get them to have good times and positively associate the other one with good times. It sounds like your first dog also has separation anxiety. That happens in dogs when they become too dependent on their human. We don't often think about it, but dogs tend to view us as their whole world, so it's difficult for them to be away from us or have to share us. You need to find your dog other outlets to relieve her boredom or loneliness, like chews, toys, puzzle toys, dog TV, etc. Just something that engages her so she's got something to do while you're gone. For my dog, it's toys and chewing. She's either carrying a toy or a chew in her mouth everywhere she goes. Hope this helps!

For countless people, you’ve made the pandemic bearable! The dress and Mini are both adorable. My rescue Poodles both have suffered from separation anxiety. The miniature poodle once ate a chair, while I was out. If Posy doesn’t suffer from car sickness, try occasional car rides to fast food drive throughs. Tasty treats, such as chicken nuggets or a hamburger minus the bun can be great motivators for loving car rides. When I brought my last rescue Poodle home, our first stop was at a drive through restaurant for a small hamburger. It’s great that Posey is better. You’re a wonderful woman for taking both Posey and Mini into your heart and home. I can’t wait for your next video! Till then, best wishes for everything bright and beautiful!

Sewing and dogs in one video is the absolute best combination! The dress turned out amazing and it goes with you hair perfectly. About the dogs: I saw in the comments leaving Posie alone while still home and I absolutely agree, depending on the severity of her separation anxiety you may need to start with only a few minutes a time. I'm pretty sure that if you looked for a solution for separation anxiety you already come across the Dog Liaison here on youtube or on Instagram. I think she made a class about it in the near past and she has a lot of great content on the issue. She breaks up the training plan really well and helped me to see where did I go wrong with my training. Another great trainer is Kikopup I learned from her so much about how to train and interact with dogs. I really like that both of them use positive reinforcment and managment rather than corrections or punishment. My puppy is just over a year old and improved greatly using their methods. While our issue is mainly with reactivity I still understand how challanging can it be to constantly manage a similar conditon and how hard is to see your dog in such distress. I really root for you to find a way to help her ❤️

Anxiety can be such a pain in the rear. (I was diagnosed with severe GAD 30 years ago) I have zero doubt that you will solve your doggo issues, though, as there is a huge amount of great advice in the comments. You’re also a pretty brilliant person, so I think your initial thoughts on adopting Minnie are correct, and Posey will be happier with a companion. The dress is FABULOUS and I love the red leather belt! As to your hair & makeup… You look gorgeous! You are also beautiful without makeup or your hair curled. Just thought you should know. Love, light, and blessings to you and yours.

When we accidentally acquired a second dog (rescued from the side of the road), we did training with both dogs side by side, both so our hound could see what we wanted and so our beagle could get used to being patient about sharing attentions

The dress is really lovely!! And the puppy is so very cute!!! I had to laugh when you mentioned the reason puppies were cute!!! I used to say that my kids were cute and angelic when asleep because they could be devilish when awake!!! Also that you should never underestimate the young! I’m afraid that there’s no easy solution to getting the two dogs together other than time. They will get there eventually

Our second dog is a rescue dog. We adopted him when he was 5 months old, and he's always had severe separation anxiety and is overall very stressed. We ended up hiring a behavioral specialist to help us, because he gets so anxious he'll even growl at us when we do something he does not expect. He's now on anti anxiety medication to calm him down enough to a point where we can train with him. Basically, when they're that anxious, they are too overwhelmed to even start training. It's gotten a bit better, and we're now starting to do some simple training. It starts with the tiniest things, like being able to walk to the door without him freaking out. But there is progress, and he doesn't imidiately start crying when we leave the room anymore. We've still got a road ahead of us, but we're a lot more hopeful. And the biggest tip the socialist gave us was to never feel sorry for him. Because they pick that up imidiately, and that will convince them something is really wrong and they should be even more scared. While if we just accept they are scared and don't pay it any attention, we show them there is nothing to be scared of, and that helps calm them down. As someone who was dealing with a massive burn out during ask this, I 100% understand it's not always possible, but seeing how much it helped him when we just ignore the stress and redirect his attention, does make it easier. And never ever feel guilty! You are doing all you can for her, and she knows and feels you love her. There is a reason she is attached to you, and you are her safe space. Good luck and all the best wishes! We're making progress and I'm sure so will you!

For separation anxiety start by leaving her in another room with a shirt or something you've worn for a long period of time. Go to another room for a few (5-10) minutes. Come back give her a treat and take the dirty shirt. This takes a while, if she's that anxious I'd only do this once a day at first. Eventually you can up the time you're in the other room. Once she's ok with you being in another room, leave her alone in the house while you wait outside for a few minutes. Repeat the same process of the dirty shirt and treating her when you come back. Consistency is the key to making this work! It WILL work eventually, but it's a long process that takes loads of patience and causes loads of frustration. Sorry I don't have a better/faster answer for you! MissMoodyMoony had a great suggestion for the car. Good luck, and best wishes!

The dress is gorgeous and looks so pretty on!!! I’ve recently had cat not getting along issues which turned out fine! They are best friends now and enjoy playing and cuddling with each other. All I really did was put them in the same room with me. When the slightly older but much larger cat got to picking on the smaller cat too much, I’d separate them, but gradually the smaller cat actually became the aggressor and then they just clicked. It just takes time.

It helps if you put an article of your clothing in the crate with them when you leave. Also, our Shepherd had separation anxiety and would tear something up when we left. So we used to practice leaving the house, gradually upping it from 1 min to 5, 10, etc, and each time we "came home" we would praise and give her a treat. She no longer destroys things and she is now 10. I think time too will help Posie, once she becomes more familiar with the new pup, she might not even realize you've left the house. Good luck and congrats on the new bebe

So glad you're back. The dress is beautiful and you look stunning in it. I used to have Irish Wolfhounds. I used treats when introducing a new puppy. Lots of fusses and treats will reinforce pleasure of being together. They will become firm pals. Posy may benefit from having an item of your used clothing in her crate. Your scent will reassure her. Hope this helps. Xxx

We had a Australian cattle dog that was very clingy and extremely upset when we left. One thing that suprisingly helped was looking her in the eyes on her level and addressing her when we left right before we walked out the door. "Dog, we are leaving and then we will come back back." Obviously she didn't know what we were saying, but she knew we were leaving. She'd bark and get her little fit out then, while we were still there, and be a lot less upset while we were gone. I think it's the equivalent of telling a kid "we are leaving in 5 minutes" instead of just grabbing them and going. Any new adjust period with a dog is going to be hard, but it won't always be like this. I love that print! Really enjoy seeing videos from you, good luck!

Hello Angela! Something to consider trying with sweet Posie is a thing called a Thundershirt. It’s made of a t-shirt like material and wraps around the dog nice and snug and can help them feel comforted. It works for my dogs when the thunder and fireworks come. Might be work that considering. Your hair with this dress are dreamy!!!

The best thing for getting an older dog to get along with a puppy is time. Their relationship will settle into a sort of mentor role as your older dog teaches her how to behave, and then when your puppy gets out of that stage they will probably get more friendly. Crate training is a really good idea! Having a crate being basically her safe place might help her stress levels. she should also be sleeping in her crate. (Our puppy will now go to her crate all by herself when she wants to nap!) Taking her places she likes like parks will help her associate the car with positive things. Our puppy also disliked the car at first, but positive association is a wonderful thing.

I have always done darts as you have shown. Recently however, I learned to start at the big end and backstitch, but then sew to the point and instead of backstitching, to knot the thread (like you are tying a shoe). The result is that my darts are so much more crisp on the point. Definately worth trying.

for the seperation anxiety, i think some dogs respond well to little weighted vests and calming music. of course training her to be alone for a few minutes, hours, etc at a time might help too. but every doggo is unique. i hope the two will become friends and enjoy their time together at some point! we have a german sheppie puppy (he looks like an adult but isnt even a year old..) and he had a lot of smaller issues that are slowly getting better. currently we are working on "not scaring the pizza delivery guy" ! also your sewing skills and eye for detail are amazing. thanks for sharing!

What a great tip with the gathering! I’ve always used 2 rows of thread, but both within the seam allowance. Doing one on either side is brilliant! You only need to make sure that 1cm or so is cooperating. Why is it the best tips are so obvious after someone points it out, but it never occurs to you otherwise 😝 That dress turned out lovely. The contrast facing really lifts it.

I had a beagle, basset, dachshund mix named Dublin who had pretty bad separation anxiety when I adopted her. Dogs with separation anxiety crave routine and reassurance. Every time I left the house, I would tell Dublin that I would be back shortly, it didn't matter if I was running a 10 minute errand or going to work for the day, I always told her the same thing and left the house. Upon my return, I would give her a few minutes of cuddle even if, as on one occasion, she chewed through the aluminum blinds or, on another occasion, chewed through a lamp cord while the lamp was on. It builds trust to focus on the being happy to see one another as opposed to the "bad thing" they might have done in a moment of panic.

We have a 10 yrs old beagle mix, Piper, who howled for the ENTIRE time my husband, who is a homemaker, would be gone unless I gave her constant attention and sometimes even that didn't work. Nothing would break her of this habit. Then we recently got a shepherd/American terrier/boxer mix (from the same rescue) named Casey they had some skittishness at first but we did get those plug in dog calming scent thing from the pet store and they slowly learned that they could share Dad and Mom. Such as both sitting on opposite sides of one of us and both getting attention at the same time. Now they are awesome together! Piper is more active with a pup to play with and she doesn't feel the need to howl the whole time my hubby is gone either. Casey just wants her to play and not sit there howling. So great for everyone.

When we got our new rescue pup she had TON of anxiety and had a lot of strange and worrying behaviors because of it. We really had no idea what to do but then we got her some thundershirts--basically a wearable swaddle for dogs--and put them on her for extended periods of time and her anxious behaviors drastically went down!! We kept them on her pretty regularly for a while but now she doesn't even need to wear them at all. It's honestly amazing, she's a completely different dog now. Thundershirts help dogs feel secure, especially in high anxiety inducing situations like being alone or in the car or during thunderstorms. I HIGHLY recommend trying one!!

The dress is gorgeous! You've inspired me to get my sewing room unpacked so I can hopefully sew up something breezy to help me deal with the sweltering Las Vegas summer. My husband and I have two corgis, the first is a few years older than our younger corgi, who we got as a puppy. We wanted a second dog for all the same reasons as you, and Marty had a very similar reaction as Posey! He loves other dogs, but I was so disappointed that he was immediately indifferent to his new brother. Seamus, the baby of the family, is going to be 5 this summer and they're best buddies now. It just took time for them to warm up to each other, and some maturity on Seamus' part I'm sure has helped! It sounds like you're doing all the right things - I think crate training Posey is a great step and should help her feel much more secure. We crate trained Marty because he would wreck our apartment out of separation anxiety whenever we left. He's a much happier dog for it, and now we can safely leave both dogs loose in the house because they were both crate trained. Congrats on your new baby. They are both gorgeous, adorable dogs, and with time you will have a happy little family. It is so sweet how much you care! Wish I could give you a hug and belly rubs for the pups.
