Making a perfect topwater walk-the-dog lure, Making a silicon mold for a fishing lure.

I have been making topwater fishing lures for many years, almost all have been unique one-off designs. Last time I was fishing with a walk-the-dog topwater fishing lure I realized I did not a have a l silicon lure mold of my favorite style of topwater fishing lure. In this video I design and make a fishing lure and create a silicon mold too, with some pretty puzzling results.

So here's what I think went wrong with the silicon mold I made in this video: The first disaster where the silicon stuck to the lure, you'll notice it stuck to the first pour of silicon. Of course I didn't notice at the time since I didn't try to move the lure. The next pour was perfect and separated leaving a nice glossy mold of that half of the lure. The only thing I did different was that I sprayed the clay bed, lure and mold box with Smooth-On mold release. I did that because I noticed the silicon was acting a bit past date and the last time I used old silicon it stuck to the mold box and the mixing cup. I had to throw away the mixing cup. But this time it only stuck to the lure! Why? I think there was a reaction between the epoxy clear, the mold release and the old silicon. On the second pour where the silicon stuck to the lure, it stuck much less. On closer examination it appeared to be stuck in lines that looked like the lines I was making as I removed the stuck-on silicon the first time. So I think I just did not clean the surface of the lure well enough and left some silicon residue. And silicon loves to stick to silicon...even residue apparently. I'm going to try to reproduce the problem so I know exactly what happened.

I just completed my first ever silicone mold today. I confirmed that silicone does stick to older silicone, and I did not use my mold release spray at all. I used no lubricant on the lure or clay bed before the first pour of silicone. Then I used vaseline on the first pour, before I poured the second half of the mold. After it was cured, neither side or the lure, stuck at all. Were those two different types of of silicones you used in the video?

Hey Franco! Good job persevering, sometimes things just happen mate. Been watching your vids non stop along with Marling baits and Solarfall baits, after finding you all about a month ago when i felt like I should give lure making a go. Just wanted to say thanks for all your helpful vids. Its because of your indepth explanations and especially the engineering principles that I really got sucked into this hobby. Ive made 3 different lures so far and went out a few nights ago for the first time with them and caught my first fish on one of them. So thanks again from an aussie living in nz. Hoping to catch much more. All the best

Hi Franco. I have never seen silicone do that! I would ask for refund. May I suggest that you put a polished layer of beeswax on the lures. Not only will it never stick, but it also will give a beautiful finish to any surface. Regards, Cam.

Thank you for posting your successes as well as your not so successes, LOL! Could the mould material be reacting with the clear coat on the lure? It's strange that the form material is only sticking to one side of the lure form.
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 2 года назад
Possibly!
@hankvana2149
@hankvana2149 2 года назад
Kinda looks like Murphy was looking over your shoulder on this one eh Franco! Strange that the first side came out fine and the two next pours didn't. Does that mold material generate any heat while curing? Maybe its not getting up to temp. I've "rapid cured" silicone using the heat from an incandescent bulb, that may help. Question... I've watched you find the center of gravity of a lure before and wonder if it would be better to float the lure to determine the center of buoyancy. Am I missing something?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 2 года назад
You could float the lure and then place temporary weights and shift them around until they give you the desired float angle. I find this method much easier.
@hankvana2149
@hankvana2149 2 года назад
@@EngineeredAnglerAgreed, balancing is easier than floating. So, for lure design, can we assume that the center of gravity and the center of buoyancy are close enough that we could consider them to be the same?

@@EngineeredAngler great! Will have a look at it. I use a set of six hooks with feathers placed in line and a lure at the end. This gives the impression of six small fishes running away from a predator and it calls the attention of the big fish. I think that a walk the door lure will even give more action to this set of lures.
