Making a Pottery Jar from Beginning to End

From beginning to end, (okay, admittedly I’ve skipped a few steps), of how one of my tall lidded jars is created.
The parts I’ve skipped are the bisque firing the jar to 1000ºC in my electric kiln prior to waxing and glazing, and then, not captured fully as it’s practically impossible to show in a video like this, is all the hours the pot spends drying how so that it can be trimmed, then the days it takes to turn bone dry and the long hours cooling in the kiln. A pot made in a minute like this never does justice to the time it actually takes to create handmade pottery. It’s a weeks or months long process, and this short video is really just a montage, snapshots from that time.
Made using a high-iron stoneware clay body, ES80, coated in a feldspathic crackle glaze and reduction fired to 1290ºC.

It's almost funny how my field has literally nothing to do with pottery and yet I come here when I'm stressed from writing code all day. Keep doing what you do Florian!

I also code and after work, I just want to do hands on activities. I took a pottery class recently and had an amazing time.

I love this short video showing the end result! Of course, I love your long-form videos too. It’s just so satisfying to see the end product and hear those beautiful crackles and pings from opening the kiln in the background!

Man I love your design. Its astaunishing how you come up with your characteristic design on all your pottery. You deserve every penny for your artistry and most importantly your ambition to make it as best a s possible, not trying to save every penny like big companies do. That makes your work valuable.

Question! With crackle glazes, how do you determine the difference btwn them and regular crazing? Love your work!

After reduction firing, are the little iron specks that form on the surface actually exposed to the air? Or are they covered with a thin layer of glass that seals them in? Btw, Loved your book. Bought it and read it completely within a week. Really enjoyed the way you wrote, had your voice in my head as I went through it similar to your narration videos =)

I'm curious why you glaze the outside first and the inside after. I've usually seen it done reversed. but I'm certain you have your reasons...
@Neopacket
@Neopacket Месяц назад
Is there a reason you glaze the outside first then the inside after? I assume it's in case you go too low with the dip and it flows inside so you can still recover without over glazing the inside... But I wonder if that is actually why or if there is another reason.
@lperwas
@lperwas Месяц назад
I think he’s said in one of his long form videos that, because of the way he holds the pot to glaze the outside (with his hand inside) if he glazed the inside first, the pressure needed to hold the inside of the pot and push it down into the glaze would mess up the glaze inside. (He said this all much more eloquently in his video lol)
