Making a Primitive Double Basket Fish Trap (episode 36)

Since ancient times primitive cultures around the world have made fish traps to gain an advantage in the daily struggle to survive. The design of these fish traps varies greatly depending on the materials available and the traditional techniques of the craftsmen who make them. In this video I use readily available materials consisting of seep willow (Baccharis salicifolia), desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) and cordage made of banana yucca (Yucca baccata) to build a fish trap to use in the stream near my camp. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

Camera: Nikon D7500 and GoPro Hero7 Black
Sound: Zoom H6
Editing: Final Cut Pro X on MacBook Air

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend, but that has been very rare.
Do you stay out there permanently?
No, I usually stay out in a wilderness area for about a week and then hike out and return to a city for editing and uploading. I have family and other obligations to take care of as well.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandals.com/?rfsn=102...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 49.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including RU-vid. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

Try soaking the willow switches for 24 to 36 hours. The ones you split in half to hold the straight ones together. Its said to "take the spite out". Also i winced at the rope you used to hold the lid on, that represets a huge time investment. You can use 4 or 5 "chop sticks" narrow to fatter straight sticks which pierce from the outer basket through the layers to the otherside. Coming from different angles they lock eachother and the lid together.
@ladyofthemasque
@ladyofthemasque 2 года назад
I'd agree with this. The pinning sticks can be less than perfectly straight, too, ideally with a few knots or knobs to help lock them in place if they're not a super-tight fit. Fast to get on, fast to get off. I'd think 3 would do okay, if they fit well, since the fish aren't going to be able to push the funnel out of the basket mouth, and if you pin them like a triangle, that leaves a good-sized hole in the middle for the fish to slip through on their way to the throat of the funnel in the top.
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 2 года назад
That's a very good tip for securing the funnel to the main basket. I still did want a rope for carrying the basket and lifting it out of the water although not essential the rope does help to more evenly distribute the weight of the basket when it is lifted out of the water.

You have to season the trap by putting rocks in it to keep it submerged under water for at least 3 days or it will float. And you will need some kind of bait like liver or something stinky for the cat fish. Worms packed into a mud ball will catch some game fish. normally a bait bag is used tied into the back area of the trap. You can make a small mesh bag out of the cordage you make. Like quarter inch holes or smaller for the mesh so the bait stays put. And fish swim up stream, so they face the direction of the current helps the breath better. The trap opening needs to face down stream for maximum usage. Fish will travel upstream following the scent of the bait. The current will keep them in the trap till you are ready to retrieve them. It's a great design. Hope you can make it work for you on the show. I had Really good luck with the ones I made. I always had a meal thanks to the fish trap.

Hello 👋, I was very impressed by your life in the wild. You may feel the true freedom that our ancestors once felt. After all, you cook yourself, looking for materials (water, berries or stones, sticks, clay) for different purposes (hunting, cooking, construction), which is commendable. Thank you Chad Zuber, you are a brave person who walks alone in nature and gives us a good mood. Good timing on the fishing because the trout in your stream should taste better since it’s been cooler. During hot weather in shallow streams like that they can taste grassy. The other species should be better too.

Yes, often I lose patience on projects that aren't working. This one was frustrating at times but I figured it out.

0:28 I would be so aggravated to be that close to the fish but not fast enough to grab one.

It was quite frustrating. So cool to observe them so close though.

I especially like Sigmund Froids quote. I wonder if making your rings that form the diameter of the trap first then weaving the willow through those would be easier. I especially appreciate your tenacity and follow through. Good day brother!

That's an idea. I think it would be more difficult that way though.
