I've been making this Dinock character and it's been going pretty well lol. Twitch: / thebestadam Discord: / discord Patreon: / adamcarra Twitter: / adam_carra #rivalsofaether #workshop
There’s a book called Art & Fear that talks about how when you X-ray some of the most beloved paintings you’ll find that there are some terrible first drafts hidden underneath the finished piece. The author brings this up to help the reader feel good about the process of creating work, which is often filled with trial and error.
@@genjy8635 hey, there's a chance, but if he really doesn't care about story fir the character then it seems like a free opportunity to goof with his fans
This is nota problem, since no one is going to make Rule 34 of the rock Yoshi... *RIGHT?* But seriously, I will be disgusted is someone makes R34 of this.
Tbh I like that his hurtbox is weird, it forces a unique kind of neutral where lows are less effective, encouraging more sweeping but unsafe moves. My recommendation (assuming it wasn't already your plan) is to make his knockback animation more vertical and rectangular to reward players who win that neutral against Dinok with more traditional combos
Here’s some lore: To the south of the rock wall and to the west of the Air Armada mountains lies a vast expanse of canyons and rocky deserts called “The Great Traversal.” This is the home of the Lithosaurs, silicon-based life forms that eat rare minerals, and use their unique anatomy to leap over long distances to traverse their canyons homes. Dinock is a Lithosaur who yearned to leap beyond the mountains to the east, beyond the rock wall, beyond any obstacle. Dinock wants to fly and explore just like the Air Armada’s members... and so he jumps, and jumps, and jumps all across Aether.
For your first time ever doing it, this is freaking amazing. most people would start with something with art similar to sandbert without the animations and just enough code to make a functional character. You did good!
@@pebblessyou I didn't mention in which way... And even though, who are you to judge dinosaurs' tastes? Dinock is based on Yoshi, who literally eat anything and everything!
Wait, this isn't Doom. Your problem about the character's lore is the same issue I have every video where I have to talk about a game's story. 99% of the time I just want to talk about the gameplay instead.
Different people play games for different reasons. If you'd rather something be designed more for the gameplay than the narrative, that's perfectly fine. Same goes for people who prioritize narrative over gameplay.
The thing is Will his colors have references Like a green and red palette based off yoshi A pokemon palette Basically will we have one or two palettes that have a neat reference
And an override: Up taunt: guaranteed tick Down taunt:guaranteed cross Right taunt: question mark Left taunt: thought bubble disappears, then Dinock laughs heartily
The 12 Principles of Animation is talked in depth in Richard Williams book, The Animator's Survival kit Ps: Richard Williams is like the guy who pioneered these principles
here is some lore Dinock is part of a group of dinosaurs that survived the meteor by hiding in caves. Dinocks species were trapped in caves for 300 years and have adapted to ther soroundings by using rocks as a defensive and offensive weapon during combat. years before the kingdoms attacked the forest the cave with dinock opened and now Dinock and his species lives near the mountains.
I'm kind of planning on making the teenage mutant ninja turtles, however i still need more practice with coding and pixel art, plus more time to see how characters in rivals work so it can feel more legit. But dinock looks extremely legit, he seems like an extremely interesting character so I can't wait to see more of your process.
Dinock's official lore: They are the meteorite that killed all the dinosaurs in the rivals universe and now they want to kill all the roster of rivals. End
I'm the same way with my characters. I put the absolute barest minimum of effort into a character's backstory/lore because all I REALLY care about are the mechanics. ...then again I still have yet to release a character and I've been doing this since day 1. Drawing just doesn't click for me.
Honestly, I'm genuinely curious about the moveset actually! I want to see more of it. For a first timer, you're tackling this a LOT better than most people. Your mindset makes me giddy, as that's what kind of expect if people want to make characters through the end. Makes me smile y'know? If I happen to catch you streaming, I'll stop by! In any case, good work!
I think your process of animation is interesting and unique to say the least. I definitely see room for improvement still, but you're doing a lot better than how I was starting off.
Just make dinock sleep for taunt. for lore he lived in the wall but the whole in the wall allowed him to crawl out of his cave and no he doesn't like apple's he likes to eat rocks.
are you thinking about adding any more mechanics or interactions between dinock's moves, or do you think you have a pretty concrete idea of what all this character is going to do by now?
I recently added more interactions with neutral b. It was just an up throw but now it interacts with armor points as well and will put enemies in a unique state that's sorta a mix between being frozen and yoshi egg
I totally get what you mean about the mechanics focus. I'm designing a fighting game and most of my character concepts have almost no thought towards the colors, lore, name, etc. There is focus on animations and poses, because they are pretty important for moveset design. But I really focus on what the character can add to the game from a gameplay perspective, and what the best methods to execute those concepts are. Some characters are fleshed out, and have visual designs, alt colors, lore and personalities, etc. Because that stuff is eventually necessary for a finished game. And I do really enjoy working on that stuff! But it's rarely where I start, and it's not what most important or even engaging to me.
Here's a backstory for you :) Dinock was a genetic experiment Jurassic Park style, but he was bred as a war machine. He wanted to live a peaceful life. maybe he likes apples? but the scientists forced him to fight other creatures (hint hint: the other creatures are the Rivals). I really love Dinock :) maybe when you've finish, you can write a backstory?
Another thing to consider is that discussion about character mechanics dies fast when those involved can't try them. Once you finish I'm sure you will be bombarded with balance ideas.
Me and my sister were actually planning in making a workshop character, so it's nice seeing input from someone who also knows nothing about making workshop characters
He looks like he runs just a smidge slow after the initial dash but if that fits with your vision of the character then im for it and i think it adds some cool uniqueness
This character better have the best written backstory of all time with multiple themes and story beats or you I will do something horrible. Do you here my plea Adam Carra?
Seeing Dinock's animations I can't help but notice they are much better than my character's animations and sprites. Maybe it's because the character I'm making is based on one of TerminalMontage's animations....
Dear Adam Carra, I have solved all of your problems. Firstly, you mentioned that due to Dinock's unconventional character model, that assigning a rectangular hurtbox would not make sense. I propose that if you were to give Dinock a massive, yet tasteful, schlong it would easily fill out the gap by his feet. Secondly you said that, to the disappointment of your fanbase, you were not interested in creating any Dinock lore. The solution for this is actually quite simple. In your past videos where you played indie games with Mr. Stefan Perez, while going through the character select screen, you would ask Stefan "who is this character, and what is their backstory?" Mr. Perez (who is a visionary director, and the gifted story teller behind timeless independent short films, such as 'Tough Case' and 'Poster Child') would, without hesitation, improvise and create an entire world for these characters and deliver it to you in as little as a single sentence. I am confidant that he would be willing to put forth the same effort towards creating lore for your character. Thank you for your time, and I hope you find these solutions to be helpful.
His taunt could jus say I don't care about apples in an 16 bit version of your voice lol and then plugs your youtube and twitch. I think I said that before on stream about Dinock plugging your stuff XD Anyway Adam thanks for the update. You're doing a great job for your first time and I've enjoyed watching this process on twitch dot teevee slash thebestadam P.S. he could have an alt color of an apple to shut the questions up. Rocks green and body red boom! Now they can be happy too. It is Yoshi, but not.
talking about the lore and look of characters, There is a stick figure Byleth that just plays like Byleth in ultimate but is a stick figure. 10/10 character to play.
