I wrap up the sawmill project in this last installment of the series. At the end of the video are rough plans with all the specific dimensions that I used in the building process. I did most of this kind of my head as I went, which isn't ideal, but drawing up the plans was fun. Message me if you want me to send them to you.

oh man there is something joyfully childish about that trap door. I mean childish in the way that like... this is exactly the sort of thing I'd dream about as a kid. Build a shed thing. Put a trapdoor thing in it, yeah, just cut a hole in it and put some string with a pulley, wicked. Yeaaah trap door! It's the grown adult version of that. Joy! :D

Not sure if suggested yet....might consider a dust collector tube suspended from ceiling...pulling all the sawdust out behind building....elevate it and have it dump into a trailer for ease of moving or selling.....great building!! Love it!!

Maybe add a heavy tarp out front to let roll down from top to keep the snow and rain off the mill when not using it. Nice mill, I have to get me one. 👍👍👍👍 Vinny 🇺🇸

I actually considered something very much like this, a heavy fabric that was on a roll, but after having worked in it through all the seasons now, including some very heavy snow storms, the dead air inside seems to keep the snow and rain from blowing in. it never really gets wet or snowy.

Nice neat work. Depending on your winters, you may want to consider adding a curtain on the front, like would be used on a livestock barn. Roll it up most of the time, but it would keep snow or rain from blowing in and keep the operator a little warmer. Nuisance to work around it when loading or unloading the mill, but a few days out of the year it would be a nice addition.
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 лет назад
That is a good suggestion and one that I puzzled over at great length last winter when I was building it, but after a few giant snow storms I determined that it doesn't need one, as for some reason, the snow and rain don't really blow into that space. I think it is a function of the mass of dead air trapped by the three sides.

If it ever does run a steel cable at the top right with turnbuckles and thread a heavy tarp through the holes on the cable. Weigh down the bottom with anything and slide it to the end like a shower curtain when in use. Works well.

Bus, I took your advice and checked out part 4 of the saw shed sequence. Yes, I see, if I squint a bit, the wire/cable you installed diagonally across your huge door. But I have another idea I'll put into your head, that your saw dust collection wall reminded me of. Now I have no idea of how much milling you do and thus how much sawdust you make, but I have seen videos of people who have Woodmizer mills who remove that plastic sawdust spout, clamp a C-clamp to the opening, and then hang a bucket to collect the dust. One person had a barrel into which he would pour the dust into. At which point, if you burn wood for heating, you could turn that dust into pellets and heat with it. Just a thought. Of course I don't know if you heat your house with wood, but it would seem like a shame for someone who has a saw mill to not use his scrapes to heat with. ;^)
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 лет назад
Yeah, I've seen that too. While I do heat with wood and I use the slabs to make maple syrup this mill is at the farm that I work at and we use the dust for livestock and chickens. I have thought about the pellet maker thingy.

Thanks a lot. I milled everything in the absolute dead of winter up here in Maine when there is relatively low moisture content in the wood to begin with. One of these days ill tuck into learning that program and just love it. If i can figure out editing software then i can do that, right? @MatHelm

Sketchup is very addictive. But that's only because with it, you can test any idea you've ever had. Personally, I've modeled my entire property as exactly as I could (laser level, etc.). Including underground pipping, wires, and drainage. Now I can look at, measure things to see if I have room for whatever. And then there's my tools. I don't have a saw mill, but if I did, I'd have it modeled up in as exact a detail as I could manage, so I could test mods and such. One piece of advice though, use groups and not components. You'll soon understand what this means in Sketchup, but components never seem to completely let go of their "group", which makes latter editing a real pain..

Sketchworks is good fun and useful but ultimately limited. The main issue is the difficulty in converting to CAD in the free version. As AutoCad is free, universal, more powerful and free I would take the effort to learn that instead. Less intuitive but much quicker when you get the knack. Thanks for posting, I could do with something similar for my mill but concrete is the biggest hassle/expense - how thick was you slab and does it have mesh/fibre. Cheers

How did you cut 26&27’ long beams on your mill? What is the length capacity of your mill. Nice building.
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 лет назад
The capacity is only 20' but yes I did mill that on the LT 35. It was a bit cumbersome, but not wholly impossible. The log i used was 27'" wide at the butt and 26'6" long. It was too heavy to lift with the forks, but the hydraulics on the mill hoisted it up onto the rails. I had the butt facing the engine side and had the 6 plus feet hanging off the far end. I would make a pass to the end of the rail and then with the running chainsaw, but the slab off and muckle it away. Then i would reset and roll the log and repeat until i had a 20' 10"x16" with a 6' round stock still on the end. I then ripped with a chainsaw one side of that flat. I then rolled the whole thing back towards the motor so the cut end stuck through the opening under the motor and over the levers. Then proceeded to mill that last 6' feet to the same dimension. then i cut off a few gigantic 1 by boards. i had the camera set up and rolling with a dead battery. of course. Show less

Love the building, excellent job. Is there anything you would do different?
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 лет назад
Thanks! That is a good question, and at this point, there really isn't anything i would do differently. I have milled many thousands of feet of lumber at this point and it has faced much weather of all sorts. I might make the rafters two more feet off the back to kick the snow farther, but thats about it.

How long is the big beam across the front and what species of wood is it. I had a tornado come through and ripped up my shed. It was a metal car port I had a 21 foot opening in on each side for loading and unloading the mill.
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 лет назад
It is clear Eastern White Pine and it is 26'4" long. 8" wide and 14" tall. It was a little bit of work to mill is out as we don't have that extra set of rails on the LT 35, but it was doable. Really shitty to hear about your shed being taken down by a tornado! Terrifying. I would like to think that this would hold up to a hurricane, but who knows. I anchored the posts with a bunch of concrete lags and the sheer weight of it! So I have a clear opening of 26' wide and 12' high. Very very little rain or snow gets into the shed, amazingly. Thanks for the comment.

@nemloc

did you make these true 8x8 or dimensional lumber sizes? (same for the rest of the items on the plans)
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 лет назад
Everything is true to the numbers on the plans, actual 8"x8", 2"4" so on, so forth. It is the only way I know how to build. Dimensional lumber is very confusing.

Just curious why you would cut a hole in the back wall when you got a friggin huge hole 10 ft away out the front?????? smh....lol
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 лет назад
Don Motz The sawdust exhausts on that side of the mill and can all be shoveled out and down the back wall. It’s quite a bit easier to shovel the sawdust into the bucket of the tractor right against that little door then up and over the mill. Thanks for the question.
@donmotz5528
@donmotz5528 6 лет назад
You mean the bucket of the tractor cant sit level with the mill and shovel it into it once instead of handling it 2 times.....ok.....just more time and work just for sawdust.....lol.

Hey hey! Glad to have you here. There is going to be quite a lot of saw milling coming up this winter, for the house that I am building. This mill does in fact not belong to me, but a friend who i work for. We do a work trade for my time on the mill. It is really great to be able to fabricate anything board wise that I can imagine within 22' long and 24" wide.

Bus, do you have a use for your saw dust? I have been thinking about turning mine into wood pellets and using them for a heat source. Possibly in my wood working shop. The mill however is producing more than I can burn in a year, so looking for something else to use them for to produce another income stream.
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 лет назад
That mill is at the farm that I work at and as you likely know, there is a near endless need for saw dust up there. Good idea though! I wondered the same thing. Making a hydraulic pellet maker!
