Making a Shop Stool out of Two 2x4s

When the Modern Maker Podcast put out the Two 2x4 challenge, I knew I wanted to try to build an entry. The constraint of using 70% of two 2x4s was really fun, and eventually led to this design that I demonstrate in this video. I was really happy with how the stool turned out, and am looking forward to making it again out of hardwood.

I also do everything on my phone, record, and edit. So I’d like to find some direction before I really start investing in it. I’m curious to know what someone else thinks. @DNHandcrafted
@DNHandcrafted 6 лет назад
Thank you Michael! It encouraged me when I read your comment earlier! I'll try to answer some of your questions, but you've made me think a blog post about my setup might be in order! I shoot most of my video with a Nikon D3200 and either a 50mm fixed 1.8ƒ or a 18-55mm lens. I love the look of the fixed with a fairly wide aperture, so I use that the most. My intro/outros are recorded with my camera AND a blue snowball microphone just off screen. I am in the process if getting a better setup to that is less tedious. I record my voiceover with the same blue snowball mic, and do all of my editing in Adobe Premier and Audition. 3D renderings are a combination of Fusion 360 and Blender 3D, and I composite them Premier. Some of my other graphics/animations are made in Adobe After Effects and Illustrator. Since I pay each month for the creative suite, I use many of the apps in my videos. Hope that helps. Happy to try to answer other questions, or if you want to know about specifics.

Really nice design. My rear is a lot bigger so I think I'll try this with more of a bicycle-seat look. Have you ever tried putting epoxy on the bottom of the legs. I've always wondered if that is as strong as they say it is.
@DNHandcrafted
@DNHandcrafted 5 лет назад
Thanks Bill! For sure, customize to suit! That’s why we build stuff. Well, and because it’s fun :) I’ve not tried epoxy on the legs. I imaging it would hold pretty well. Honestly, with the mortises, I imaging the only holding power needed is when picking up the stool by the seat. Otherwise gravity and force are in its favor. Thanks for watching!
@bmilhoan
@bmilhoan 5 лет назад
Thanks for the reply! I was speaking about a video I saw where the builder made a mold with blue tape around the bottom of the legs. He then poured in maybe .5 to 1 inch of epoxy. After it cured, he trimmed it up. He said this would make the bottom of the legs more stable and stronger. Just curious. I've never tried it. I have a very rough garage floor and thought this might help. Thanks for your awesome videos!
@DNHandcrafted
@DNHandcrafted 5 лет назад
Ah, ok! I’ve not used large amounts of epoxy for anything yet. I can see how that would add strength. I could also see just sealing the ends with epoxy to make them less likely to get moisture from the concrete floor. Thanks for explaining that more!

I'm interested to know what software you use for mockups? The CAD I've been working with isn't cutting it these days
@DNHandcrafted
@DNHandcrafted 6 лет назад
+Britt Layman hey man! I used Fusion 360 (Free for hobbyists) and Blender 3D (also free) for my models and animation. Fusion is nice because it can be exact measurements, and you can use it for the actual build as a reference. Blender has some more control over the process - but its a lot harder to get a nice wood texture there vs Fusion where the wood textures are awesome. What software were you using?
@blmus
@blmus 6 лет назад
DN Handcrafted thank you sir! I'll have to check them out! I've been using SketchUp predominantly, but while it's relatively simple to use the exactness is where it lacks man times. Great tool for basic mock ups, but not ideal if I have to still crank out the measurements and math. Great vids man!
@DNHandcrafted
@DNHandcrafted 6 лет назад
+Britt Layman SketchUp can be accurate, but you have to type in measurements while using certain tools. For instance the rectangle, if you click to start, then type 4’x8’ and hit enter, you’ll get a 4x8 rectangle. Then use push pull, click on the face, and type .75 and hit enter and you’ll have modeled a sheet of plywood accurately. Maybe you’ve already tried that, but I used to think Sketch Up was super inaccurate until I started doing that.

@DNHandcrafted
@DNHandcrafted 4 года назад
Hey Rob! That is from big gator tools. It’s around $24 on Amazon. I believe I have the 1/8 to 3/8 guide. In addition to drilling straight holes, I use it all the time as a gauge for how big a hole I need for a particular screw or bolt.

Oh, they call it the “v-drill” guide and there are several variations.

What tool were yoy using as a stop to drill your dowel holes

+washito422 I used a drill guide from Big Gator Tools. It’s about an inch thick, and helps keep the bit at 90 degrees when it enters the wood.

I'd love to try this. Is the 3D model available? I'm willing to purchase the model, please let me know if this is a possibility.

Hi, what is the actual measurements for a 2x4? I'm in Australia where we use different sizes. Can you help me, imperial dimensions are fine. 🌍 ☺

Hello! About 1½ x 3½. Would be easier for everyone if it were actually still 2” x 4” 😀

There are measurements and drawings here, but I believe you have to be an Instructables subscriber to view the PDF: www.instructables.com/id/Modern-Shop-Stool-From-Two-24s/
