Using readily available decorative silver wire or bezel wire can be useful for making stacker rings. The decoration adds interest with the minimal amount of effort.
Here, Andrew uses 2mm round beaded wire to create a silver stacker ring in less than 10 minutes from start to finish using the minimum amount of tools and equipment.
Andrew shows you many hints and tips that he has gained from his experience as a professional goldsmith.
Andrew Berry, a professional jeweller for 30 years, is the training director of www.AtTheBench.com, an award winning on line jewellery training website.

I am so grateful to have found your channel. I have been making jewellery for years but I really wanted to do a gold/silversmith course but they are so expensive if you are not a school leaver going into the business. I have been bouncing around all the 'proper' gold and silver smithing channels online but your channel seems to tick all the boxes and I can on say thanks again. I will pass on your name to any other jewellery makers because you do such a good job of teaching and you are not at all intimidating like some people are. I hope your channel is successful and you continue it for a long time. Cheers mate X

I just made some silver stacker rings with 14g half round wire. I wrapped the wire around a mandrel and cut them with flush cutter, the same way one might make jump rings. I used hard solder wire, since I will be adding petite bezel set stones to some. Sawing the wire likely would have been better, but the saw seems to shift on me, and I'm new to this, so I don't have control over the saw like you do. I also have never made jump rings! It was just my approach to save time. The half round wire did spring out, so that was another obstacle to keep it tight at the size I wanted. I'd love to see you do a video with this approach! And, would you use hard solder then if you were planning to add a bezel? Would the solder paste just melt away if you heated the stacker ring to add a bezel after? Thanks for your help! I'm delighted to find your channel, since I've taken a few metalsmithing classes, and your approach seems so much more logical and time saving than most of the methods I've been taught! BTW...I searched for a jump ring video on your channel too, and did not find one.

My supplier says most of these wires come dead soft and requires heat hardening in a kiln at 2 temperatures. Is there a way to do so with a torch? Such as the "old way" in a dark room and a torch?
@catzkeet4860
@catzkeet4860 3 года назад
I know this is an old comment but.....You can’t harden wire with a torch. You can “soften” (anneal) the wire with a torch. And most metal fabricators provide stock in dead soft, half hard or hard, your choice. Hard can be annealed to soften. To harden a wee ring like this, the best bet is a tumbler. Otherwise you can gently pound it with a rawhide/urethane/plastic mallet to work harden.

Andrew, why is my silver turning pinkish? Someone said to change the pickle which I did, but it didn’t make any difference. Thanks.
@alexyouknowwhoitis2169
@alexyouknowwhoitis2169 5 лет назад
This could be copper plating due to using iron/steel tongs to dip in the pickle. This is why true pickle tongs are made of copper instead.

It is a silver solder. There are tiny pieces of silver solder already mixed with a flux that are in the syringe.

Andrew Berry thanks! Connecting question, 1) what's the proposition of the silver and flux? 2) How is the metal in the syringe in a liquid form? Pardon my lack of knowledge... I'm a complete beginner!
@catzkeet4860
@catzkeet4860 7 лет назад
Ashima Sharma like he said, it's not metal. It's powdered solder mixed with flux. Instead of painting your joint with flux, then placing a pallion(or chip) of solder on then heating, you just squeeze out a little of the solder paste out onto the joint and heat till the solder flows.

how do u do the ring of balls?
@AbsentWithoutLeaving
@AbsentWithoutLeaving 5 лет назад
Brandonliin Silva - The video explains how to make the ring. If you mean how do you get the balls on the wire, you don't. As Andrew explained, it's a specialty wire you buy already made up. That's why it's such a quick job! This type of wire is used by metalsmiths as a design element that can be added on to other pieces, for example, at the base of a bezel, for added interest (a lot of Native American or southwestern style jewelry has this feature), or added anywhere you want a beaded detail. Once you order some, you'll find a million different ways to use it! In the US, I know Rio Grande carries it under the name "full bead wire" (they also carry a "half bead wire," which instead of being beaded all the way around would have a flat back). In the video, it looks like Andrew used 2mm full bead wire; Rio has one that measures in at 2.03mm. It's sterling silver, and it's dead soft, so you will need to do a bit of the gentle hammering on a softer surface (like wood) that Andrew shows, in order to harden your finished ring sufficiently. If you go to Rio's website and search for 'silver wire,' you'll see a lot of different types of specialty wires (called 'gallery wire' or 'pattern wire') you can use to make similar rings, again as Andrew noted. Have fun!

Question: Can I use solder chips and borax flux instead of solder paste as Andrew uses in this video to make this ring?
@catzkeet4860
@catzkeet4860 3 года назад
You can but the reason he’s using paste here is because it’s a TINY soldering area and it requires a TEENY amount of solder. That’s hard to do without flooding with pal lions. Paste will also stay put much more easily than pallions.But you CAN use them, paste is just easier.
