Making a Simple Lathe Dog from Scrap

I know making a lathe dog is not a large project, but I need a decent-sized lathe dog to make another couple projects that are on the go. Just used scrap bits from the pile, as they were there already to use. Not a super long nor complex video but I figured chips were being made, so you might find it even mildly interesting.

I like the challenge too, making stuff from scrap - it's a cool satisfaction to have made your own tooling, and the price of scrap is just right!

Good job on the lathe dog. I finally found my drive plate so I can go back to using the dogs that came with the lathe.

Thanks Harold, it's not pretty but it's functional. At some point I may need to either modify the commercial dogs or make another drive plate to work with them. Depends on time and what's above it on the to do list . . . Hope you're doing well.

@@EverettsWorkshop I have the same problem, with the dogs being too big for the slots in my face plate. I just bolt a piece of scrap to the face plate to drive against. OK for longer parts, doesn't work on short ones. Have cobbled together various solutions for short ones. 3/4" pl. drill & tape for a drive stud. Not nice like yours but worked.

Lol, hey Pierre, yeah, the tungsten isn't liking the swimming lessons it's getting - it complains after getting tossed into the deep end. Just finding I'm getting shakier as I'm getting older, hopefully with practice and technique it can be at least partially compensated for . . .

Even a little older eyesight is also going down the drain, things aren't getting better with age, at least for welding.... You get deals as a senior citizen for soft food and movies... lol

We didn't want to put him in day care, and my wife has a very good career so I did the stay at home Dad gig for over a year. Now I have a part time job but am still on primary child care duty. What's fun is that as he grows I see he is fascinated by tools, hopefully he'll want to play with me in the shop when he's older!

I pretty much worked a full-time job and taking care of her for the last I pretty much worked a full-time job and taking care of her for the for years. I quit hunting and pretty much spent every waking moment with her that I could. I think that's the most amazing thing we can do for our children. I've got a awesome kid!

Thanks Richard, we both try to use scrounged stuff as much as possible. After a suggestion further below I may modify it a bit to add more balancing weight down the road, we'll see. Hope you're doing well and your boundary issue is resolving well for you.

Thank you for the kind words, this one was just a simple piece so I could finish another job. As for the shop, it's totally different now, in a different house! Still a disaster here but at least functional enough to get some stuff done, lol.

Hi Brian, thanks for the support. We'll have to see about Little Man on the channel as time goes on, it's easy for little squirts to have a huge web presence before they even know what one is. It's one thing for me as an adult to show my face and enter the public view but I don't know how much he'll want to as he gets older. I just want to be respectful of his privacy for now, it's one thing to see his back but another to see his face. I do appreciate you joining in though, thanks for saying hello!

Thanks guys, it was just something I needed for another couple jobs, nothing fancy nor complicated. Nothing like the intricate stuff you guys build and fix. The spill proof cup is one of Jim Dedmon's, he gave it to me and it's a super handy little oil pot. As for the welding, I'm still developing TIG technique, if the tungsten stays out of the puddle I consider it a successful bead! Hope you fellas are doing well!

Thanks, my videos (especially the discussion portions) are far from perfect and I don't really script them. Thankfully most people who are into the same sorts of things as I am are hobbyists too and cut me some slack for mistakes. And believe me, I make a lot of them, lol . . .

I never have the ideal drive dog on hand - I really must make one or two more - one day! Love finding a purpose for 'scrap'. I ought to set up my 4-way toolpost for a parting tool - for sure it should be more rigid. The dog came out pretty good. :)

Thanks Chris, I just needed one and the scrap was there. The spring u-bolt was rather serendipitous in that it had a 90° bend in it and was the right diameter. As for the turret post, it's night and day for parting off, as my previous 'Murphy' demonstrated . . .

Nice clean work! I currently have zero lathe dogs. I did have to make one a couple of years ago, but I have since cut it up for some other usage.

Thanks John, it is a little rough as it really is repurposed scrap but it is functional. At some point may try to either make my commercial dogs functional with the drive plate or make another plate. We'll see.

Just so happened i had to make one today to. And you have to have something that works to get the job done . Although i was still working with the mini lathe.My Griz may finally get hooked up in March. I really need to get so lathe dogs. Real good and timely video. Great as always keep up the awesome work. Good little project, one thing you can do is drill and tap a series of holes so you can drive the dogs off of them, that or machine a T nut to fit in the slots in the face plate. That is why I made myself a drive dog plate. To get around that problem

Great job nice video. It should be obvious that the dog could be balanced by welding weight to the bolt side of dog. That would only be worthwhile if the dog was going to be used a lot. That is the nice thing about metal you can weld cut weld cut until you're happy.

Thanks, I just needed one and had some scrap available. The thing is that with this style of dog is that the larger the shaft the more out of balance it gets. What I got to doing is attaching a nut and bolt to the backing plate to balance the assembly when using this dog.

if you weld onto the other side a similar weighted lump of metal apposing the drive pickup bar you will balance the vibration out, or make thick wall tube to slide on the grip bolt . if you want it perfect sit a bearing inside and the heavy part goes to the bottom add washers to balance it out. i know its possible a waste of time, but its worth while.

Yeah, I've used this thing a few times since and added a bit of weight to balance it if the vibrations were getting annoying. Not a complex project, but it sure has come in handy.

Just a thought .... Why don't you move the locking bolt 90 degrees and add a second hook leg to your lathe dog. I think it will help balance your project and get you less vibration... Nicely made ... Thanks for sharing.

That is a thought, but if I do that it would require a lock bolt on both sides of the dog to keep it concentric. It would certainly work though, as long as one was careful enough to get the thing centered.

Everett, ditch the bolt on the dog and replace it with a set screw before it catches your hand. You might keep an eye out at yard sales for some cast iron weights from a bar-bell set and make a proper dog plate for you lathe so you can use your other large dogs. If the lathe is vibrating... slow it down or add counter weights as others have suggested. If you go to a tail stock dead center you'll have to slow it down anyway so you don't burn the dead center or the work piece.

I hadn't thought about a set screw, that is a good thought. Will watch for a good deal on them in M10x1.5. I'm thinking some bob weights will be made up as well, to offset the imbalance issues when it's on a larger diameter shaft. Again, just making improvements on the basic idea, all in time. Dead center lube can be had from most auto parts stores as "engine assembly lube". CRC "Stalube" extreme pressure anti-seize with moly-graphite blah, blah, blah. It comes in a black toothpaste style tube.

Thanks for the video. You may want to think about bolting on some sort of counterbalance to your faceplate on the bolt side to try and reduce the vibration. I have also been toying with the idea of mounting a "back box" to my crosslide and mount a parting tool upside down. Something solid.

Another couple viewers suggested adding nuts to the bolt side, and I like that idea - thinking some slugs with M10 threads in them to put near the head of the bolt. If that doesn't work then adding weight to the face plate is the next step. Just trying to minimize flailing objects . . . Thanks for coming by!

There are always a couple of "right" ways to set something up... usually the "right" way depends on what you have available. It costs money to have the perfect set up. If you run a die down your bolt you can use a donut style piece (no thread) and an M10 nut to hold it in place. You can add washers for more counterbalance as required. Either that or buy a Timmies and see if you can roll up and win a donut. :)

I'm a bit late to the project here, but had a thought. If you put a couple nuts on the clamping screw, would that help add some counter balance, thus reducing some of the vibration? Liked the outcome from using scrap parts :)

Good job, to make it a little better you can add some weight to the lock bolt opposite the dog leg to counter balance against the vibration.

Nice work. Being lazy, I would have opened up at least one of the slots on drive plate to accept the tang on the dogs I already had. A non-destructive and useful modification. Of course, then I'd miss out on the fun of tool making.

Thanks Todd, I'm lazy too but also cheap - I'd rather mess up a piece of scrap than accidentally mess up my drive plate that actually cost money. Maybe some day I'll make a drive plate that will work with the dogs, but got a few more things needed first. Thanks for joining in.

Concerning the off centre mass (and consqeuent lathe vibration) you could weld a couple of counter weights opposite the tail, twinned around the bolt?

After getting the tail stock alignment bar finished, I was going to get on to another project that needed to be done between centers but that got pushed back. Some family projects needed doing, then the shaper arrived, but at some point I will need to use this dog again, on that piece it was holding in the thumbnail picture. What I was thinking of doing was using the backplate itself and bolting some pieces of metal to it on the opposite side of the tail to balance it. We'll have to see when it comes to that point.

What type of drill bits do you use to drill through the thick steel? I had to drill a 3/4" hole through a 4" schedule 40 drill pipe. it took me forever and I went through 6 bits drilling 4 holes. The bits stated they were COBALT for hardened steel, but they spun and smoked: low speed, high speed, no speed LOL it was frustrating. Can you please recommend some bits for my application?

Honestly I just use whatever drill bits I have gotten from auctions, but I have invested in a few cobalt bits for certain things. The big thing is sharpness, but even with that I know my sharpening skills are not Abom-level, lol!

To balance the dog just add some lock-nuts to the clamp screw until it runs smooth.

I think I'll be doing that, perhaps even with some adjustable bob weights - at some point there will be a "little bits and updates" video where a number of projects will be reviewed and perhaps improved, and messing with the dog will be part of it. Thanks for coming by!

Good vid. Why didn’t you just grind the tails down on your store bought lathe dogs? I think most are just weak cast, they crack if you get mean on them. Cheers

Thanks, I just needed one big enough to work on both that alignment bar and on another project that is sadly now sitting idle since the shaper and a number of hurried friend/family projects have come along. Will get back to it when a bit more caught up. I just didn't feel right grinding on them when a couple of them wouldn't even reach the drive plate slot. I may use them down the road against the chuck jaws using a sacrificial center should the need arise. The thing is that I haven't seen an old South Bend/Atlas-type old school one-slot driveplate in D1-4 so figured this was the most expedient for the purpose I needed.

Thanks! I've never used a Bolton but they look similar to standard Asian lathes of other makes. Probably average to them as well regarding quality but you might get clearer answers on the hobby machining forums - as I say I have never used a Bolton.

I don't know how much difference it makes but your lathe dog only touches your part tangentially? in two small places...would that not increase the chance for the part to slip?

You're right, it could increase the risk, but after giving it a try using reasonable depth of cuts it seems to hold. At some point I might put a small groove with a plunging end mill cut on the tail side inside the ring if it's needed. I hear you though, and will have to watch for any potential slippage. Nice work. Can you add metal to the other side to balance out the tool so it doesn't vibrate? Just wondering if that is why the other tools have the heavier point to one side.

Thanks Craig, I may just do as you suggest at some point and weld a bit of metal to the screw side of the dog, we'll see. I'm sure you would be right about the commercial dogs and how they're shaped.

Maybe add a couple of nuts on the threaded bolt as counter weight.

That's a good idea - might even make up some threaded wide sleeves similar to the bob weights used when balancing crankshafts. I think I'll do that, seems to be the easiest solution, thanks for the idea.

I would have milled a couple of opposing slots out of the faceplate to keep it balanced, then the original dogs will fit.

I had thought about modifying the factory face plate but they don't put a whole lot of iron in them. That and the one piece that needs doing wouldn't fit in the biggest commercial one in the stack. I need practice doing D1-4 nose tapers anyway, so will make a face plate to fit the factory dogs at that point. Thanks for joining in!

Great job Everett! That'll come in handy :) I was all about to collect a set of traditional dogs off eBay or wherever when I figured out the first one wasn't going to work and ended up making a separate drive plate instead of using the faceplate. It's small and easy to mount and I just use a stud or bolt for a "carrier pin". I got the idea from Charlie Pace here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xVNJvHp6lwM.html The plate is light and can be small, near the size of work you do and dogs can be made out of flat plate with a slot to engage the carrier pin. Anyway, one other approach if you need more later. On your current dog, maybe you can put some nuts on the bolt end or a hunk of 1" rod with a threaded hole to act as a counterweight against the dog arm. Turning between centers will be most accurate when you have a reasonably balanced setup, for when you really, really need it concentric and a smooth finish :)

Hi there may i ask wath type and brand your lathe is ,i think i got the same but mine is green and by the brand name FERM and there is almost nothing to find over it ,even on the brand 's homepage ,they stopped selling them some years ago. They never produced those themselves and ordered them somewhere in the color they wanted and the logo's they wanted to be on them.Hoping to hear from you greetings Danny

Lube for dead tail stock center... Dutch Boy white lead mixed with machine oil.. Just don't eat it....

Hi Mike, I had heard of using white lead, but didn't have any. Will need to look around to try finding it as here in Canada there seems to be a hate on for lead stuff. Thanks for joining in!
