I was thinking about a step stool for my workshop and I like the ingenuity of the slide out. Might have to copy that 😉 As for a furniture channel, yes, I'd go for that too!
Nice clever design with the stool, Stu. About the 2nd channel, I am with Ben (hewawe) on this. I also think 2 channels is a headache, unless the 2nd channel was something completely different, like a channel about cars or watches or dogs 😁

Morning. Great build! I've had an old stool that I've been planning - for years - to add a step to. I was planning a fold-up sort of affair but your version is a far more sensible and, to my mind anyway. pleasing way of doing it... As to your furniture builds... For myself, I enjoy all your content. Should you start a second channel I'd happily watch that too. The idea is to learn - right...? Keep truckin'...!
Thanks mate. Think I probably would've preferred something that folded up but, couldn't think of a way to make it work - strength wise - with the offcuts I had. The sliding step is a nice simple way to do it though. Would be perfect for a retro-fit I think.👍

It looks great Dude. If I were you, I might replace the limit stops with vertical members that are a hair above ground level. These should allow the sliding step to move as it currently does, but under load, would bear against the ground. I’m sure that your design is structurally sound, but adding a vertical member either side at the back would assuage my concern about the loading at the rear of the step pulling / shearing / fatiguing screws over time.
Cheers mate. Yeah, i considered an extra set of legs but I think it'll be alright. It'd have to sheer 8 screws to give. An extra square below the step runners inside each front leg would add extra support when extended. I'll add something like that if it feels like it needs it after a while 👍
@@BischBaschBosch I agree. My concern, which is only mild, is that in a screwed connection, one screw is always loaded a bit more than the others. I was mainly thinking about fatigue failure. I’ve investigated a good few lorry wheel detachments and they (nearly) always go the same way. You get a loss of clamping force, which fatigues one wheel stud, eventually to failure. That failure mode cascades around the other wheel studs. If you had wood glue on the load bearing connections, which is a surrogate for clamping force, I’d have no concern at all. I’m probably overthinking a non-problem.
@@dwalsh3469 I always appreciate the input and engagement my friend. I have now added a couple of little squares on the front legs of the stool to support the back of the step when extended. It's been fine (video is about 2 weeks behind the actual buuld) but my missus has taken to using it often. I'm fine using myself as a guinea pig but not others.😉👍

I have access to a massive American red oak which was brought down in a storm. How did you plank your elm? I am firewood converting 130 year old oak tree and I would love to at least make something from it In a few years time once dry
Cheers bud. So because my bandsaw is pathetic, i chipped some bark off a quarter of the log then planed it a little to create 2 flat spots perpendicular to each other. I then ran em through the table saw to create board widths, then finished the cut on the bandsaw. Much easier if you have a decent bandsaw with a 4 tpi 1/2" or 1" blade with power to run it.
@@BischBaschBosch thanks mate. My band saw as one stage up from pathetic… the tree is 26 inches on the crotch and 36 inches on the main trunk. So massive. I just want to save part of it
@@dougsaunders8109 They width measurements? That is quite big if so. My advice there would be to chainsaw or split them down the centre/length to make it more manageable. I selected logs that would be no more than 200mm diameter inside the bark. I'd have no hop of processing otherwise.
