Making a Tanto from an Old Steel Angle | Knife Making

Welcome to my first video!
Making a Japanese Tanto from an old steel angle I had lying around. I also used wood leftovers for the knife. The handle is made out of limewood and blood wood (wich is a tropical tree so I wouldn't buy it again, but I wanted to completly use the piece I had from years ago).
Thanks for watching!

Awesome job. It was nice seeing someone spend as much time on the handle and sheath as the blade. I’m working on a similar project right now. I’m making two fantasy scimitars from angle iron. I don’t intend for them to be anything more than that all hangars, and they are really too small to be swords. It’s nice seeing someone use easy to obtain, common materials, and tools to make something so nice.

Cool none the less. To actually achieve a sori or blade curve, one must heat treat with the differential method and water quench resulting in the blade drawing itsself upwards as the blade edge cools and hardens faster than the spine.

Or you can just cut monosteel into a curved shape. Either method, though Tanto are not classically differentially heat treated or at least not to the same degree as longer blades.
@johnwirk

@@jonathanchark5291True that. I made a couple tantos for christmas gifts and it was amazing how much they curved just being about 13 inches. I did have one crack once when I moved it too much quenching. If one does venture into knife making, water quenching and differentially hardening is a must try.

Structural, fabrication, known as Mild steel will not hold an edge. Heat treating will not do anything to it as far as hardening it. Get a piece of 1075 or 1080 steel. There easy to heat treat.

Pretty much all structural steel shapes are made of low carbon steel (also called mild carbon steel) . It's quite tough, but doesn't hold a sharp edge for very long under hard use. For a Tanto, it is fine, since this type of blade is primarily for self defense and not utility.

@@ANprojects Thanks for understanding. Nice to hear it. I think O1 steel(most typical knives steel) has already been recommended to you. I can add that O2 steel is also very good (a little more difficult to process, but like O1 very good for chisels, carving knives, planers and other things that must be extremely sharp long time like japanese tools). RWL 34 - very good knife steel(especially to chemical engraved knife). D2 good too. Also many crafters use flat files and disks saws for knife making(need tempering first and relatively difficult hardening). Hardening, yeah. Tools like knife really need it. Gas balloon torch blow is enough in simple case. You need two iteration. First heat to orange-yellow glowing and quick cold in water\oil for hardening. Next is tempering heating for removing fragility(~200-400C). You can use color tempering list from here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempering_(metallurgy) Usually process like this - make shape, start polish, hardening\tempering, finish polish, sharpening. With files and other hardened things - add tempering with slow cold in air at start point. I hope you future tools will be not only pretty looks but pretty usable too.
