Making a TWIN RC Wankel Rotary Engine - The Crankshaft (Eccentric Shaft)

Ever since I made the video with the starter modification on my O.S Wankel engine, I wanted to make a multiple rotor assembly. Last year, I found a second one, new on ebay and I didn't lose the chance to buy it. I know many of you will ask me why not a 3 or a 4 rotor engine? It would be absolutely crazy and beautiful, but the cost is really high (almost a grand each) and the complexity is much higher for my skills. We'll start with the 2 rotor and if it works we can dream. Making this crankshaft was quite the task, because due to it's thickness, when the diameter started decreasing on machining, it kept bending slighlty. I was constantly checking with the dial indicator, and the best I could do was to finish the part with 0.02 runout. I could have used a steady rest, but I don't have one at the moment. Also one of my concerns is that I won't heat treat it as it would bent to the point that it'd be unusable. Heat treating is not an option for me unless there is some secret I don't know.

Wankel... not Rotary
@averagecarguy420
@averagecarguy420 3 года назад
@@sandervanderkammen9230 it is a rotary engine. It has a dorito. All Wankel engines are rotary. They’re called wankels because that’s the inventors last name.
@sandervanderkammen9230
@sandervanderkammen9230 3 года назад
@@averagecarguy420 I'm going to assume you are novice on this topic, and amateur fan perhaps. There are TWO TYPES of Wankel engines... one designed by Felix Wankel and one designed by Hanns Paschke and Walter Freode. Only one of the two different types is a ROTARY TYPE engine and this is not that type... this is easy to determine because it has a rotating eccentric-crankshaft. Any questions son?
@averagecarguy420
@averagecarguy420 3 года назад
@@sandervanderkammen9230 no questions and I’m not an amateur. I build engines for fun. I’ve been watching him for over 2 years. I also experiment in machining and fabrication. These engines are known as wankel rotaries and have triangle shaped rotors. True rotaries are airplane engines with pistons and cylinders, but a stationary crankshaft. There are two types of rotary, the dorito type and piston type.
@sandervanderkammen9230
@sandervanderkammen9230 3 года назад
@@averagecarguy420 Thanks for confirming my suspicions. Any expert on the Wankel is aware of the two different types. Only the DKM-54 is a ROTARY TYPE engine. The engine in this video is a Wankel KKM-57, this is the non-rotary version and is clearly distinguished by the rotating eccentric-crankshaft. The Rotary version of the Wankel has no crankshaft or flywheel. Any questions?

Awesome video! You know roller bearings require an Rc60 hardened surface. Since you started with 1045 steel, you could heat just the eccentrics red, then spray with water to quench, all while spinning in the lathe. Then, straighten any distortion, and polish the eccentrics.

Hand manufacturing is not economically feasible. But, if you get a eccentric shaft designed in Fusion 360, you could probably get a CNC shop to bid on making you multiple quantity for a reasonable price. Probably a minimum of 10 for about $5,000 USD including setup fees and materials.

Well to be true it isn't that hard (the most exhausting part is to make no screw-up and to keep up the attention) I have learned all the skills too during my apprenticeship (in the German system which is really good especially in any craftsmanship) I mean i have learned to work by hand (file) in a tolerance of 0.1mm, to use a Milling machine and lathe also I did lern how to MAG and oxy-fuel welding as well as soldering oh and basic heat treatments I had also courses in pneumatic, e-pneumatic and hydraulics that all just to be caster/Foundry smelter
@TheLtVoss

@Cory Gill the only reason I don't do same thing similar is purely I leak fundings for tools and materials (also film equipment) But the work behind that what u see Is the hard part really the planing of the steps and oder of operation is the most exhausting part Also I have seen his video for quite a long time (before he had the lathe) and man I haven't sayed I could it do better I'm just saying it takes less than a year to have an huge amount of skills In craftsmanship if u have a apprenticeship in Germany (if u learn for a job that has to do with any craftsmanship) And to ur grandpa well after many years he know many tricks as machine operator but if u show him that he will say same thing similar the "skill" needed to operate a lathe is not very high but the knowledge needed for the planing is a huge part also I have casted multi million dollar parts to but u probably don't know anything about alloys and the property's of molten metals or there classifications

The part would require grinding after heat treatment. You def won't get the results you want machining to final dimensions and heat treat after. Would need to machine the part to larger than final, heat treat, then finally grind down to exact dimensions. Not sure if you have a grinder setup, usually pretty specialized. I'm sure though that there is someone or some company out there that could do it ezpz. But yeah, not easy, not straight forward to heat treat AND have good tolerances. Also a side note, most/all? crankshafts are forged not cast or from bar stock. The re-arranging of the crystal structure from forging helps significantly in the part's strength and durability.

@@xenonram as little as that? I thought you just pay for the process and size dosn't matter (unless ia huge ofc).

He’d said something about the first part bending like crazy because he put too much heat into it while machining and that he was worried about sending this one to be heat treated and it warping, as well
@DaftFader
@DaftFader 3 года назад
@@cj15941 he said he was worried about heat treating it himself. If you send it off to get done properly then bending should be negligable.

Awesome tooling. Love the eccentrically machined crank lobes. They looked freaky when spinning in the lathe. Well done.
