Making a Vertical Leather Card Wallet By Hand
This has been our MOST REQUESTED project to date, so we made up a nice vertical leather card wallet pattern and made it up in two different types of leather exteriors. This vertical leather card wallet is handmade using natural vegetable tanned leather with some interesting scraps we had laying around for the exterior shell. The vertical leather card wallet is saddle stitched by hand using waxed poly threads. This leather card wallet is a fun diy leather crafting project, and can be made with about 1 sq ft of leather using the pattern we've made available!
Make sure to keep the leather wallet edges nice and straight using a ruler, then some sand paper mounted on your workbench once you've trimmed the final design. You can fit a whole bunch of credit cards and folded up cash in this vertical card wallet design.

I bought the pattern and the template to mark the top of the pocket A, you cut it above the line that is on the pattern to cut out, which makes sense… But the pattern the only cut line will make it the same size as pocket B, and it should be the size (height) so you can mark where the top of pocket A goes?? Right?? So it’s basically a guessing game as to where to place pocket A

@Corter

Thanks! We don't thin it down at all, but we use the small bottles because we toss them the minute they get too thick (which happens in probably 5 days of using a bottle with the opening and closing).

@Corter

Thanks! I think it all depends on your materials - thread type, thickness, needle and hole size, etc will all effect how easy/hard it is to sew. Finding a combo that works for you is a lot of trial and error

Late to this party... but still relevant question. When I use my chisel like that to make the stitching holes after about 2 layers, it is almost impossible to remove the chisel, the friction in the leather holds it so firmly I can barely remove it with pliers. All the movement just destroys the shape of the holes. I have given up on some pieces as I had to cut the chisel out and throw the work piece away. I have tried sharpening, and waxing them. The only way I have been able to work is to make holes in one layer of leather, and then push an awl through the rest of the way, but it doesnt look very nice.
@ephraim9332
@ephraim9332 Год назад
If your using leather thicker than 3-4 oz its too thick especially for wallets. You might also want to try a different chisel set like KemonCrafts pricking irons.

@SteveGarelick

I have the exact same problem. One side is nice and straight and the other side can get wavy. I think it's the fact that I may not be keeping the stitching chisel perfectly vertical. Would love to hear how does it; my guess is that it's just practice.

Awesome video, going to purchase the pattern right now! Got a quick question for you. Does doubling up on the back panel piece serve any function other than aesthetics? It seems like it makes the wallet stronger, but also more difficult to fold/close. Is this step optional? Thanks!
@Corter
@Corter 5 лет назад
Thanks! Doing a liner means the entire piece is grain side, there's no flesh showing - it's aesthetically super nice, but longevity wise it's a bonus because the flesh side will degrade faster than the grain side if you're taking cards in and out often. If you use thick leather you'll risk the piece being hard to close, but if you use thin leather you'l be fine - we use 3oz leather throughout, so doubling up with a good solid glue job means the body is 6oz which is just thick enough for some structure without being bulky :)
@xderiwx
@xderiwx 5 лет назад
Corter Leather Hi! Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it! I purchased the pattern and I have some natural veg tan ready to go. Just about perfect, it’s 3/4oz. So with the grain side being folded back on itself (inside liner), should I do anything as far as conditioning or oil? I’ve never made a lined piece yet, so I’m just curious if something like that ever starts cracking or requires anything to help with wear n’ tear. I’ll put them together with contact cement. 👍🏿 Thanks!
@Corter
@Corter 5 лет назад
It'll behave just like any other piece made from natural veg, I'd condition it as you normally would other pieces
@xderiwx
@xderiwx 5 лет назад
Corter Leather Corter Leather Hi guys! I have one more question if you don’t mind. I’m about half way through, and ready for the final stitching. For a project like this where you are stitching in one continuous run, do you start your stitching run with a back stitch or only finish the run with back stitching? If so, how many back stitches would you typically do on a wallet like this? I couldn’t really tell from the video. I’m familiar with stitching things like card wallets, where you can back stitch at the beginning and the end of the run since there’s a break in the run. But for something like this where you’ll be starting and ending at the same hole, it seems like that first/last hole would be really full if you started with a back stitch? Thanks!

this might be a stupid question, i don't know anything about leather craft, but can things like this be made without the rubber cement or contact cement or whatever the bonding adhesive is?
@Corter
@Corter 5 лет назад
Not a stupid question! You could in theory pre-punch all the holes on the individual pieces and line them up to stitch them together, but it would be adding a very unnecessary level of difficulty to the process when a bit of glue makes the whole thing go 10x faster (and makes for a much more tidy final result). There are eco-friendly leather glues that can be used, you can even use Elmer's school glue to act as a third hand if fumes are an issue.

Question: are you reusing the leather on which you wrote the sponsor information? If not, wouldn’t it be cool to make some very minimalistic wallets and do giveaways once in a while.? I mean if the leather doesn’t do anything than laying around that would be a cool alternative to „recycle“ that leather and give it a new life! Just a thinking from me! ;)
@Corter
@Corter 5 лет назад
the leather with the sponsor info has been the same piece the whole time :) but we do make what we call "scrap wallets" from time to time, which is wallets made from the branded sections of hides or pieces of partially dyed/printed leather. In Japan the branded part of the hide is often times considered the most special/lucky, as there is only one per hide!
