Making a Walnut Bowl

Two years ago, I cut up a black walnut log into slabs with my friend Gabe. We cut up part of the tree into smaller chunks that I made into bowl blanks. Those blanks are now dry. I have turned one of them into a finished piece. The bowl blank I chose to use for this project had a big hole in it and had cracked. I cut out the defects and made a striped pattern wood piece to replace the parts of the bowl that I removed. I then turned the glued up new and old pieces into a finished bowl and gave it to Gabe as a gift.

Yes me too. I love when the thumbnail is a segmented bowl like this. Franks way of cutting and piecing them together with such style is unlike anyone else I've seen! Gotta say there is something so calming about his voice too!

I felt the heartbreak when you almost went through the bowl. It's funny how as a maker you feel compelled to mention how you had to add in the bottom piece. I've done similar things. You almost feel down because you know the gift could've come out better. It's cool to see it from an outside perspective and realize that your friend was still touched by your thoughtfulness. It became a footnote in the story of the piece and not a blemish on your record. Love your videos Frank!

They don't even understand what he means when he says I had to add a piece xD they're just stunned by how wonderful the craftsmanship is. I'm like that one guy: "you turned that yourself?", "yeah" "MAN! :O"

I've been watching your videos for a couple months now. I don't know anything about this craft at all. But it's been a rough couple of months and going through your videos, watching you make these amazing pieces of art as well as the calming way you narrate your work has really helped me. Thank you so much

Amazing work Frank. I'm sure you can relate when I say that I got so much more out of gifting my turnings than selling them. You inspired me to start wood turning 4 years ago. I owe a lot to you for sharing your talents. I hope one day to meet you and shake your hand.

This video brought back awesome memories for me with my great grandpa. He had a truck identical to yours that he’d take me to check cows in every summer when I was younger. My grandma had to sell it to cover costs whenever he passed and I haven’t seen it since. Wish I could find it now!

I watched the CNC cut the rebate and thought,"Wow, he went really deep." I was right. Next time, cut a circle and leave the bottom as thick as you can. Nice save. Lots of work, but great job. I have been trying for years to make a bowl that is bigger on the inside than the outside. Now I know how.

That last part was great! It’s funny to think that to your subscribers you’re a famous woodwork/woodturner, but to many of your friends and acquaintances, you’re just Frank, and they might not even know you can turn wood. :) glad you salvaged the bowl. I’ve cut into the tenon on most of my bowls. Your save is a lot more elegant than most of my attempts.
