Making a woodcarving knife - start to finish

I wanted to make a woodcarving knife after seeing some beautiful carvings on Instagram. A quick google search pointed me in the direction of the Mora 106 knife by Morakniv® as one of the most reputable knifes in the craft. I decided to take this example as my inspiration for the making of my knife. I opted to give a little more flair to my knife by making a faceted handle with a brass ferrule and buttcap. The blade was made from an old hedge shear by the stock removal method and personalized by electro etching my logo into the blade.
FAQ:
How did you do the etching?:
it is called electro-etching. This is a technique where you apply a resist to a (metal) surface (in this case I used elektrical tape), then apply a current through an electrolyte (in this case salt (NaCl) dissolved in tap water). I used a 9 volt battery, and used alligator clips to connect one end (plus or minus, don't remember) to the knife metal and the other end i put in contact with the electrolyte absorbed in a cotton swab, which closed the circuit when applied to the metal surface. so it reacts with the metal and extracts the metal from the surface, dissolving it in to the elktrolyte,. This is what I think is happening. You would need to google it if you want to be sure.
Thanks for watching,
Marcel

Wait what... can you explain what on earth is going on there when you did the logo with that battery and solution? the result is awesome i really want to try it out
@MarcelTeugels
@MarcelTeugels 4 года назад
Hey! You should definitely try it out! It is very easy, cheap and gives great results. The sollution is just kitchen salt desolved in water. Sending the current from the battery through it makes the metal corrode away rapidly there where the bare metal and the sollution touch. THe hardest part is getting a clean and crisp "mask" (that what protects the metal you don't want to be etched), I used electrical tape for this. Good luck! Marcel

Lose the gloves when using a belt/disc sander. They can get caught on the rough sandpaper and pull your hands or fingers into the machine. Same goes for grinders. Better to be scuffed while barehanded than have a catastrophic injury.

What does the heat treatment do?
@MarcelTeugels
@MarcelTeugels 5 лет назад
You need it to make the steel hard enough to hold and edge and flexible/tough enough not to break under stress. If you don't do a heat treatment the metal blade will either be too soft and go blunt very quick or too hard and shatter under stress. Hope this helps. Their are some great video's on RU-vid explaning this proces. Thanks for watching
@johngoodall7097
@johngoodall7097 5 лет назад
Superb finished knife. I was a little concerned when you were fitting the handle to the blade early in the process, that you held the blade against your fingers edge first, without taping the blade, The blade must not have been too sharp then, but otherwise you have good skills in working metals, which I don`t have, although after watching Forged in Fire I have learnt a lot, but you have taught me more!!! Regards from John in England.
@MarcelTeugels
@MarcelTeugels 5 лет назад
Thank you John. It edge probably wasn't sharpend all the way at that point, luckily. 😀 Thanks for the kind words. I was my first time really working with metal. The blade you see here is the second one, after broke the first try in two during a bad set of heat treatments. So all you need to do is try and try again. Thanks Marcel
@johngoodall7097
@johngoodall7097 5 лет назад
You are right Marcel if I don`t get the result I want when I carve, I don`t worry about it I just get on and try again, its better for your piece of mind not to get upset if you make a mistake, keep trying, thanks for the reply so quickly.

It's a beautiful and nice Knife. Respect! But... The Morakniv (I own a Model 120) are so fair prized that I see no reason to make my own. Most notably that the Morakniv 120 has a blade of 3 layered laminate carbon steel that keeps sharpness long and is easy to re-sharp on a fine bank stone. The steele of the hedgeclipper is for sure not bad (nice idea!!) to make a carving knife, but compared to the steel of the Mora I guess there is a huge difference...
@MarcelTeugels
@MarcelTeugels 5 лет назад
I agree completely. I think i also mention that in the desceiption of the video. The morakniv knives seem very high quality and are very affordable, even cheap to be honest, for what you get. Therefore they are so popular. I made this knife just because i wanted to make a knife, for the fun and the practice of the making proces, and maybe be able to do some carving with it. So i copied the most popular and most effective bladeshape out there. Which happened to be the morakniv (106). I also linked to their website in the description for people who would be interested in buying one of them. Thanks for watching and the comment.

@MarcelTeugels 5 лет назад
Hi, I answered this question once before. I will copy and paste the answer I gave them here and post it in het description of the video. Thanks for watching and pointing out something was not clear in the video! The etching process in my understanding: it is called electro-etching. Have a nice day. Marcel

Is that handle bulky it seems really big for a carving knife
@MarcelTeugels
@MarcelTeugels 5 лет назад
I'm fairly sure it is a bit thicken than the mora 106 handle, the length is the same. The thickness is because i wanted to use the brass nuts. Thanks for watching.

Hi, i do not sell knives. This is the first and only knife i made to date. This knife is based on the Morakniv 106 which you can find here: morakniv.se/en/product/woodcarving-106/
