@balddicknosedasscanoe i don't know, i am just a student and one of the topic i need to review just focused on conversion rate and finding parameter that matter and how it affect it. While surfing through, either i forgot that it have been mentioned or it rarely ever be mentioned is how the proportion (or rather different vegetable oil) affect the actual quality of the biodiesel when it's used on the car. (My guess is that, just like many other production. You just compensate the pure biodiesel created by mixing it up with other chemical or treated in order to reach desired value. So... No idea for the home-made one. Or it's separated topic that are scrutinized independently of each other which i highly doubt).

@balddicknosedasscanoe um, just a little question just to make sure we're on the same page. When you said biodiesel, do you just mean vegetable oil or an alkyl esters which is biomass (including vegetable oil) that already went into conversion into biodiesel. I did't use the second flask with sodium chloride and i just took the receiving flask and used a vigreux columnfor second distillation. I also used potassium bisulfate instead of magnesium sulfate. In my first time my yield was just 17%, so next time I used twice more potassium bisulfate and that incrised my yield to 31%. I stored my acrolein in freezer but a week latter I also had just polymers.

Acrolein (systematic name: propenal) is the simplest unsaturated aldehyde. It is a colorless liquid with a piercing, acrid smell. The smell of burnt fat (as when cooking oil is heated to its smoke point) is caused by glycerol in the burning fat breaking down into acrolein. It is produced industrially from propylene and mainly used as a biocide and a building block to other chemical compounds, such as the amino acid methionine.

I took a single chemistry course in my high school career and we didn't learn a lot about the manufacturing of chemicals. I was just curious as to how people create this sort of stuff in mass. Are there just very large flasks that are used? Or is there a different process? Even though I am not into chemistry I still find these videos very entertaining, so thank you Nile for producing them!

They use a larger scale and always the cheapest way to manufacture chemicals and not always the lab method.

I would say that industrial production is definitely not done in glassware but some steel reactors with anti-corrosion coating and Wikipedia says that it is produced by oxidation of propene in presence of some catalyst.

In this case, acrolein is manufactured industrially in a completely different process, using different substrates and reaction. It starts with propene derived from petroleum. Propene is a gas and it is passed around a solid catalyst. Reaction takes place in gas phase. In simpler terms: industrial process is much more like burning a certain gas in a controllable manner than this reaction in a flask.

I've been waiting on Lithium Peroxide, I hope that one is done being edited soon. Also, for suggestions, Nitrous Oxide and Tylenol from Aspirin. As always, great job on the video and sorry about the Acrolein polymerizing, bit it's probably for the best.

It is sad because if i used it right away, everything would have been great. Oh well. The lithium peroxide will be next maybe. I just need a decent way to demonstrate it.

a few tips if you ever try this again. if you use a schlenk flask as the receiver to draw vacuum while its open you limit exposure dawg. lead the vacuum exhaust to a bubbler with concentrated base. add acetic acid and do NOT neutralize the acid or you shit will polymerize in a day or two as you observed. base catalyzes the polymerization. you use a low boiling chlorinated solvent to remove water then fractionally still that off. store in freezer protected from light with the HQ and acetic acid. the stuff should keep for longer than one week. we do all that when working with MVK and it keeps for 6 months but slowly inevitably polymerizes no matter what you do.

you should make MVK next. formaldehyde + acetone look up some patents. you got a great channel man very entertaining even for someone who works in the field like me. i don't have time to do all the cool little experiments you do haha.

Could you do a video where you separate aspartame into phenylalanine and methanol?
@NileRed

I think i looked into it and it wasnt super easy to do. Maybe I could make aspartame though.
@AwesomePower1234
@AwesomePower1234 8 лет назад
Aspartame is pretty hard to make from the research i have done. It involves culturing these 2 bacteria species, collecting their waste, and then fermenting them together. Nasty stuff.

Really interesting reaction. just a suggestion. All time we work with HNO3 and produce NO2/N2O4, is a waste of Nitric Acid, since is possible to condensate and mix nitrogen oxide with water and make more Nitric Acid, reducing losses. Would be interesting a video showing NO2/N2O4 recovery and liquefying it, like you did with NH3. Also, you can explore and show the hypergolic reaction with Aniline or furfuryl alcohol. :)

The salt works as an abrasive, so you don't really need to fully oxidize the material, just loosen it up enough to be removed by the coarse swirling salt.
