For those wondering yes Cody searched for Buddy a while and finally grieved him , and theorized he might have been taken by a bird of prey . This is a new fella , he is nice and I hope he won’t desapear like Buddy
Stray/feral cats unfortunately die quite often from other predators, vehicles, and diseases. (Always check your cars, trucks, and farm vehicles for cats trying to stay warm if you're in a cold area!) We can only hope that somehow Buddy found a new home somewhere else, wishful thinking I know but I hate thinking of the poor guy in pain, he was a sweet boy. I hope this new kitten will be around longer and hopefully it won't disappear without coming back.
Was there a cat in the thumbnail? I use RU-vid almost exclusively through RSS, showing titles only... because thumbnails are nearly entirely useless (when they're not misleading).
Cody, You're such a great educator! You acknowledge when you make a mistake and find a "solution" that corrects the mistakes. I also loved how you used the legos as an example, and the addition of cute kitty reactions is always a nice touch. Glad to see you uploading more frequently again!
Hey, currently building an algae bioreactor right now! Includes stirring, arbitrary gas/liquid inputs, peristaltic pumps, heat/temperature monitoring, turbidity sensor (to monitor growth rate) and more. Will post a demo of it when I finish.
@@theCodyReeder thanks, only about 1.5L. I’d like to play around with a flexible grow bag (using some 4 year greenhouse plastic), but got to finish the small version first.
Have you considered frequently transferring small amounts of the algae to a new container with fresh media? In theory this would select for fast growth which could be beneficial since it sounds like the plan is to just use the biomass.
To eliminate the crystallization, you could make a concentrated cation solution and anion solution separately. That's how we do scale inhibitor testing at work.
I have always loved your vids Cody, never have I taken any chemistry, most of the explanation videos like this are way over my head and I love them all the the same. You are just great at making vids and splanin stuff:) Thank you.
In the previous video you mentioned that you buy things in "small yet still too much containers", I believe for the coppersulphate, you can use it to do some etching in metal? Could be a fun project too if you haven't done too much of that? Anyway thanks for the video, good fun as always & nice to see a cool new cat!
I've been rewatching your mining series and honestly you're great! your content has been consistent (-ly awesome) throughout the years which makes rewatching older videos very enjoyable
As someone working in plant science… I want to see you try using coconut water as the base liquid rather than water(just a small test) there have been many studies showing the benefits for plant growth medias
Still feel horrible for you when I think of Buddy, but that little guy was so lucky to have the life he had with ya. The new baby is adorable though, hope we see more!
@@beauxgaloo9621 Of course, as far as Buddy is concerned! For Kanyon, though, I don't know either of them personally so I don't really have any idea whether that would be better than moving on. Either way, hope he's doing well, and hope his new kitty has a long and prosperous time with Cody :)
Most 1-2 part hydroponic nutrient solution has stuff settled. Just shake it, it won’t make a difference to the algae/plants. It would be interesting if you could re-create Ph perfect from Advance nutrients, but at a higher ph value for your algae. That way you won’t need to mess with ph up/down.
Cody. I absolutely love your videos. Thank you so much for sharing with us your projects. I know you don’t know me but I charrish our time together. I hope to one day have the courage you do to participate in the knowledge transfer that you do through RU-vid. A lot of stuff on this platform is so bad for people in so many ways but your videos are like a ray of sunshine in the fog. God bless you
Absolutely loved this, I need to go back in your videos and see why you’re doing all this(the first video I saw was of the panel, and it looked like you had a full project where you needed to eat the algae.) 10/10 keep up the good work.
Cody I've loved watching your videos since my teenage years... I remember cringing in horror when you put a magnet in your finger! Thanks for always being there Cody 🙂
You could just put the bottle of nutrient mix into a sonic cleaning device to remix the crystals gathered in the bottom. Note: you don’t need to take the solution out of the bottle, just put the whole bottle into the sonic cleaner and just add enough water to the device so that it works properly.
Primitive technology has done a couple videos on a bacteria that grows in water in the wild and generates iron oxide. He uses said bacteria to make small quantities of metal using hand made tools. I’d love to see what you could do with that bacteria.
I've had a lot of cat videos in my feed lately, so the thumbnail almost made me miss that this was one of your videos! Thankfully my eye caught your channel name, so I could click on it immediately rather than waiting for it to filter though to the top of my feed after I've watched a million other cat videos.
Yay! An algae vid! I was thinking about asking either yourself or NileRed about making/extracting Dimethyloctahydronaphthalen-4a(2H)-ol - aka Geosmin, which I believe is a large part of the smell of rain when it approaches. Interested?
I've never thought about what causes rain smell, that's really interesting. So I assume that when the rain falls it disturbs the dry soil and causes it to release aerosols, probably bacteria based but could be something else, and I'm guessing humans can detect it in tiny quantities because water is important for survival.
@@candyman9635you are literally spot on, and yes it's microbial. There is an Adam Ragusea video on the subject. What we smell and why is such a fascinating subject.
Hey Cody! I’m a potter who lives in Utah, and I’m trying to find some beeswax for waxing the feet on my pots, and leather treatment. Would you be interested in a couple honeypots, or some other ceramic goods in exchange for some beeswax? If not, do you know any other Utah beekeepers who might be interested?
Have you considered using citric acid to help dissolve metal ions? Citric acid is able to do chelation and is likely food for the algae later. It might be a good supplement to EDTA and might even replace it in some recipes.
I never made it to chemistry or any kind of advanced classes in school…. But I absolutely enjoy your videos man! Thank you for helping me learn a little bit at a time! What’s up with chicken hole base?
All you clever chemists here, can anyone with certainty answer what exactly the black layer that forms on copper is composed from when you treat bare copper with a warm aqueous solution of liver of sulphur (K2Sx / potassium polysulfide). All I'm finding is websites that repeat the others calling it "oxide" and "patina". I'd also like to know if it is stable under heat and UV. Trying to refurbish a solar heat collector and the soldering "burns" off the black coating so I need to reapply something and this looks like a good chemical process for that. (Paint insulates too much). It's behind glass so there won't be much UV but it needs to last a long long time.
I'd have probably just left out copper entirely because the first batch of algae would carry over enough for several expansions. Don't forget you can buy waterglass or potassium silicate , or disolve the silica with lye.
Apparently this is the year for orange tabby cats because I adopted one that was abandoned, a friend of mine adopted a different one that had no home, we've seen a new orange stray in my neighborhood, and now Cody has an orange kitten Lol Thanks for the new upload, Cody, I never get tired of your curiosity and love of science!
@@Iroquois_Pliskin that's so cool! I've always loved orange tabbies, they're so sweet and affectionate, ours has become best friends with our older black tabby :)
I got a very very fat old man tabby this last year as well. He was on a farm and lived with a pig for a couple years and I’m almost positive he thinks he is one himself. Good guy
Wtf... Yeah. An orange tabby kitten (5 or 6 months old) showed up at my house. We asked around trying to find an owner, but no luck. We decided to keep him.
I'm interested in trying algae farming on a small scale, what would be the possibility of you selling the dry components ready to mix? I'm really enjoying the algae videos.
Mate I believe you don't partake of drink but I appreciate your method of thinking and the depth you go into your hobbies. Iwish you had a brewing series along with your other video endeavors.
Would it not be more convenient to mix everything together and store it as a dry powder? Obviously you'd have to dissolve it before use, but I can't imagine anything crystalizing in a dry form.
I swear I could listen/watch you talk about algea and expanding cultures and building algea panels all day long. Just something Immensely interesting about that idk
Cody, i have an important question, I'm not sure if you ever tested the mineral content of your product but if you haven't i would implore you to do so with great concern as it might slow which forms of which nutrients are actually taken up and how much of them are within the food that this algae can be. I'm not asking for a personal answer from you, only for everyone's better health.
Why not make dry my mixes that are pre-portioned for convenient final “wet” volume? For example weight out enough for 100L final volume then divide it into 10 and store dry. Then if you need to make a 10L solution you just add one bag or jar of the dry to the wet. Do you think there’s any issues storing all the additives together dry? The advantage is theres less to get wrong, no measuring, no chance of crystalizing, less shelf space, lite weight… seems like all good things
If you can't use minty toothpaste, try the cloves variant. I discovered it in Thailand and it was an amazing new take on toothpaste for me. Cloves containes augenol I believe, which is what the dentist smelles like. Great work and video again Cody!
Enjoy your videos. Any updates on the algae? It appears that many researchers are giving up on algae as a viable source for biofuels. Several years ago, I experimented with Chloropsis because it has a relatively high amount of lipids. Mixed results because of inability to scale up in Wyoming. I decided to try again with lights, so I bought another culture. Thanks, Jerry
I love all your video. But definitely video regarding plants intrest me the most (I love plants) but it did remind me. How are the trees coming along in your reforestation of the ranch?
Other than hypothetical possibilities, what do you actually use the algae for? Have you used it as a nutritional supplement, or fish food? Also, what sort of lighting environment do you put the cultures in? Do you use natural light or artificial light?
So what about algae's air needs? Is it necessary to monitor the air and just circulate, or do you want to measure O2, N2, CO2 to ensure you're not getting a capnophobic environment etc?
Yes, when I tried potassium ferricyanide 1 g per 1 L it did not work since the iron and cyanide had a tight bond. Just wanted to try that. However EDTA and Iron salts that is interesting.
The solutions you made look a lot like Masterblend part A and B for hydroponics. It would probably be cheaper and easier to switch to that. It does grow algae too.
I was soldering new electronics into my guitar last night and my cat almost stepped on a 500C soldering iron. I almost had a heart attack. Now I’ve learned to shut the door when soldering with Cats in the house.
Our cats always used to brush up agsinst the glass of the fireplace and singe their tails. Sometimes i think they only have a single brain cell bouncing around in their head 😂😂
