I think his sub count is a tribute to his personality, rather than his filmographic skills. He's so charming while he shares his interests that it's hard not to smile along as he pursues them. There's a lot of stuff he's done that I've watched with joy, despite having no interest in the subject, and come away having learned something!

One thing to bear in mind with these Kintsugi-style repairs is that the traditional technique puts the gold just on the surface--as you found, mixing it in doesn't produce a good visual effect, and it's expensive too. What you really want is to fill the gap, and then essentially "gild" the repair with a layer of high gold concentration.
@shadowtheimpure
@shadowtheimpure 2 года назад
Plus having the material mixed throughout can compromise the actual integrity of the repair itself as the aggregate material can sometimes prevent a good bond.

Interestingly enough, Clay is the name of a Particle Size for geological sediment. Clay, silt, sand, gravel, etcetera are all the size names of sediment particles. The colloquial use of these words is used less precisely than the actual correct usage, so it can be confusing. :-)

Just a suggestion. Try paperclay. It's easy to make. Take toilet paper, add it to the clay slurry and stir with a paint mixer. The paper quickly breaks down to pulp. The green strength of the clay increases by several orders of magnitude. In fact it would take a hammer and several strong blows to even dent the clay. The paper burns out in the firing and there is almost no visible signs of it unless you use massive amounts of paper.

@PotionsMaster666

Cody, I absolutely love your channel, I watch (almost) every video but watching you do this is one of the most painful things I have seen you do. This is so much more difficult than it needs to be, and I am so sorry you had a hard time making this. finding information on ceramics is not very easy because you either find tutorials meant for kids, artsy videos that do not tell you anything, or they are very overcomplicated jargon-full over the top discussions of very specific clay things. I hope that this does not put you off of making more ceramics in the future! I would love to watch you make more. I love this channel and I love ceramics. I do not mean to be rude but here is how you could have made this differently so that it would have been easier for you, and hopefully easier the next time you make ceramics! - at the start when you crushed the clay, this is both unnecessarily tiring and also dangerous if you are not wearing a dust mask (silicosis over a very large amount of exposure, but still is not that great for the short term who wants clay in their lungs?) To avoid the hard work and clay dust, you could allow the chunks of clay to completely dry and fully dry and then add them into a bucket of water, water first then the clay. leave the mix for a couple hours or so or just feel the clay to check. when the clay chunks are completely bone dry and added to water they will kind of disintegrate into the water and mix in really easily, unlike when they are still wetish (leather hard) where they will just sit in the water and not change much. to get the water out yeah either let the mix settle and tip it off or you could put the clay on plaster. the plaster sucks up the water and the clay very easily peels off after it drys a bit. if you're concerned about rocks yea you could sieve it through a very very very wide sieve or just leave them I guess. - in the video you left all the sandy stuff both at the bottom of the bucket and the fish tank. because of this your clay is a LOT less suited to sculptural things like you did with the M. if you were making thin plates or something thin and delicate and small it would be ok maybe, but anything that you're going to be moving around and sculpting will break really easily. just like when you mix rocks and whatever into concrete? I assume idk. if you are going to make sculptural pieces with your clay please leave the sand and that sort of stuff in, it will make your clay stronger. if you are concerned the clay is not clay-y enough then you can take some sand out. to test how plastic/clay-y it is you can take a piece of the clay that is about the wet-ness of playdough, roll it into a skinny log shape and see how well it bends in half and around without cracking. - when you made the M you did not make it hollow, because of this its going to be really heavy and I sort of think that it will crack easier but I am not 100% sure about that. its just not great to have a big solid chunk of clay, and if you must have a big solid chunk of clay then fire it slow af. if its solid then make sure it is incredibly 100% certain it is dry. I am not certain about the specific temperatures that you should fire the work a lot slower for because i'm a bit iffy about that, but maybe look up a kiln graph/chart thing for temperatures, or how people fire work that they're a bit concerned about cracking. ( you could have hollowed it out by getting a spoon and scooping out a bunch of clay out of the back of it) - I think you did a good job kneading the clay that looked nice, if you're concerned about air pockets like I saw in the second piece but I think that is from when you joined the two colours together, but anyway if you have clay that you think has a lot of air pockets then slam it really hard onto your table a few times with the aim of kinda flattening it out, the air pockets come to the surface when you do this. - you smoothed the work and drilled holes into them both after they had dried??? why????? just smooth them and put the holes in while they're still wet haha because then they wont crack so easily and you can change it. idk I have put holes into already fired works before but its a lot easier before the clay is dry/fired. - when you put the work into the kiln you were concerned about it cracking (i am assuming) maybe put the work in a part of the kiln where the temperature is going to be even, like laying flat on the floor. also I would not ever put work into a kiln leaning like that. when the clay sinters and whatnot into ceramic it stresses it out, leaning like that is putting stress on the legs making them even more likely to crack into pieces and warp. - last thing, when you mixed the colouring stuff into the clay at the end, that stuff is expensive so you could keep the idea in mind that some people will create a colourful slip from these mix ins stuff and dip a leather hard work into the slip ( make the slip out of the exact clay you are using, maybe take some sand out and it will stick a whole lot easier than some random clay that will probably shrinks at a different rate. -one thing I forgot, when you joined the broken leg onto the original M, you didn't scratch it up a lot and make lots of scratches into the original two pieces that cracked apart. think of all the little grain structures and stuff that's mixed across a normal piece of clay, that is kind of what is holding it together. it doesn't matter if you wet the two halfs and put slip onto them if you don't score a lot where the crack is and smoosh them together. an example of this is say, if you got to pieces of hardish clay, made two balls or two smooth surfaces, and then stuck them together. it would be really easy to break them apart from the original join again because there is no grain structure holding them together. if you scored/cross hatched/ scratched up the two surfaces a lot before you stuck them together they would stick a lot easier. - this isn't an improvement or anything but the stuff you made is a very very not really but kind of-ish form of terra sigillata. its the stuff that they put over the top of greek vases to make them shiny, they didn't use glazes. a very rough terra sigillata would be to mix up clay in a bucket really well, let it sit for about three days, then siphon/tip off the water, then siphon/tip off the suspended clay particles into a separate container then after some water has evaporated off and its a consistency you like, you can put it onto works made out of the same clay and get the back of a spoon or something nice and shiny like a tumbled rock or gemstone and softly rub it onto the clay surface to make it really shiny, then you fire it quite low i think just normal bisque maybe 1000c? dunno. but otherwise I'm pretty sure the burnishing just goes away when the structure on the surface changes. I'm sorry you had such a rough time with this, please don't let this put you off making more clay works. you could have also made a plaster mould out of mixing water and plaster and stuff but that will just make this kinda essay lol longer. I made ceramic bottles and other stuff for my uni stuff, out of clay that i had dug up from my grandmas farm. haha. anyway have a good day:)

There are two type of chemistry RU-vidrs: 1. Cody 2. NileRed Gotta love both of them. I love Cody's way as it really feels homemade and almost doable in spite of the being extremely complicated at times. NileRed seems like what you would like to do if you were working at a research laboratory - Very interesting but not accessible by everyone

So Cody (and to be clear, this is NOT a criticism of you and your work!) I would speculate that the reason the clay warped on the second attempt was due to having 3 differing clays. Each one probably shrunk at slightly different rates causing the warping. Also, if you are sticking large surfaces of clay together, you may want to score the surfaces you are joining. This will give you better joints and prevent it from seperating (such as with the repair...). But it sure looks cool! Good job on that!
@slverskull

I was so worried when he wasn't scoring the surfaces of those long strips of clay, I've had a few pieces fall apart because I forgot to score and slip. His final piece still looks really good though!

Something that used to work really well for me to help dry the clay is to take some pieces of drywall, even scrap, and wrap it in canvas. Dries the clay fast, and makes wedging really nice and easy if the canvas is drawn tight. I've been watching your videos for years now, love your channel. Keep up the great content!

This does not work well with real clay since it shrinks and cracks if there's something solid inside. North of the border uses polymer clay which is quite different.

Cody, it would have been better to form the holes when it was in its soft state, however the repair would have been solid had you wet it back as much as possible and inserted some sort of rod like coat hanger cut into strips 👍
@christopher-
@christopher- 2 года назад
Adding solid pieces into clay is rarely a good idea. Since the clay shrinks while drying, and again while firing it's going to compress around the solid parts and likely crack.
@Amac-uz9hm
@Amac-uz9hm 2 года назад
@@christopher- I’ve actually done this more than a dozen times and ended up with one cracking but it was easy enough to fill and dress it up with a touch up the point being that it would be solid 👍

In japan there is a repairing method called kintsugi also known as kintsukuroi. They repair the broken pottery with lacquer and cover it with silver or gold or platinum. This add a little bit of characteristic to the pottery and from that moment it has more sentimental value, because it show the pottery has a history. I think what you did is you added a little bit of you in that "m" letter.

Those swirls from the different clays were actually making me hungry! Especially the bit when you first applied the epoxy and we could see the pristine interior. I think my brain associated it with chocolate or a mousse. Great work Cody. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat with style! That's the first i've seen of your clay deposit. Clay is fascinating stuff. Changing it's crystalline structure depending upon the elements it contains. So it has memory of it's past exposures. Put a blob of one clay with another & the blob combines with the new clay to make a new type with qualities from both "parents". Hard, rocky clays don't move about much at all. And fine clay either dries out & blows away or gets diluted in water & is washed away. But lumpy clays, with a fine clay matrix that washes away letting the hard lumps tumble along the stream bed to join with other clays. Their crystal structures changing as the new information is passed on. There was some work that got quite far in looking at clays as the first replicator. I think it was dropped s while ago but what we learned about clays & how it's crystal structure records and passes on information about what elements it has been exposed to is fascinating.

Nice gesture and project! Their recent ice episode was brutal, but they seem to be recovering well... xD Cody, wouldn't it have been better to add a bit of skeletal support there? Like a thick copper wire or something, to keep with the theme... xD Not sure if different rates of expansion meshes well with this though... even different types of clay, I was expecting it to crack in line with the different layers. :P
