Making an Anvil from Railroad Track 

In this video, I am making an anvil from some old railroad track - a classic RU-vid project. No nonsense, no sponsors just getting outside and making a cool thing from a piece of scrap metal. Hope you enjoy it!

Really nice filming and editing on this. You should try Diablo brand grinder wheels. No joke you could have done all this cutting with maybe 3 discs. They last 10x longer than the cheap ones.

Nice job and looks great. But for those who wish to make one, I strongly suggest that you take your piece of railroad track to any welding shop, after marking out the cuts you want, and have them torch or plasma cut the rough shape. I will bet that the cost will be less than the cost of all the grinder disks that you used.

Look out for discarded disks that are used as weights to tension overhead cables on the rail network. Maybe some can be found in station car parks. They are very heavy too.

You ought to take the rest of the railroad track and use it as a striking face for a homemade power hammer. That would be cool

Really nice work! A wee tip if you don't mind. Sharp corners tend to make cold shut when forging and should therefore be rounded over more. The more one increases the radius the less chance of cold shuts. I recommend getting at least a 4 mm radius. Except for the corners you use for scoring or cutting materials with ofc

♥ lovely anvil! Perhaps you can use the other material for a "hardy hole" unit with a bunch of the most common inserts. If you make it to the dimensions of existing anvil hardy holes, it's compatible with existing tooling. It would also work as anvil for driving punches through your workpiece.

Looks real good considering you don't think your weld are very good looks wise, but as you say as long as it's functional and done to a sufficient standard thats all that matters. It looks like a ton of work though, burning out a brand new 9 inch Makita is no joke (as well as a cheapy grinder) if you were to price it if you wanted to sell it you'd have to get tens of 1000's to cover costs of material, tools, electricity on top of an hourly labor cost. You'd never get anywhere near enough to cover costs and thats considering the railway line was free. I thought I'd mention that in case some dummy out there thinks they could make money out of anvil making. Anyway you've ended up with a great looking anvil that will be around for centuries to come

I think everyone has a secret yearning to make a rail track anvil one day. Few people actually realise the dream though. I just make do with a cast iron 56 lb weight but maybe just one day...

It's not hardened now but the more you use it the harder it'll get.

Cut out a square hole for tool holding

Rail road track makes literally the worst anvils. There is no mass to them and the work surface is small as hell. You would be better off getting a giant thick chunk of steal from a scrap yard and use that as a anvil.
