In this video I am CNC machining a brass utility knife holder, that I designed using Fusion 360 generative design.
I designed this handle to test out the new Carvera Air CNC machine, sent to me by Makera.
This new machine is a more budget-friendly version of the original Carvera which I have made a video on previously.
The Kickstarter for this machine has just launched! Check it out here:

Not only is brass a lot more aesthetically pleasing, it feels a lot better than the really lightweight aluminium.

The slower shots of the 4th axis turning the brass handle caught the light so beautifully! Oh, and this is some excellent technical work, whatever ;)

Wow this was a brilliant show case for the Air! I loved the thread cutting into acrylic :o and the contours being cut into both the ali and brass looked awesome with all 4 axis being put to use! I've always wanted a CNC mill, but I just wasn't going to commit to a cheap router. I really do believe Carvera has made the right move here and will definitely be on the front line with bringing premium small scale CNC to hobbyists garages!

This part could have definitely been done on a 3 axis very easily. Cool to see these desk top mills coming along with their technology. A misting system would greatly help out in place of a flood coolant system. If you klnecked up tighter on your tools so there isn't as much stick out and increased your feed rate and reduced your woc and doc and use more hsm style of milling you can greatly increase your chances of less broken tools and less machining time. Slotting isn't your friend with low rigidity machines high feed endmills are.

True, could be easily done in multiple 3 axis setups, was fun to use the rotational axis tho

I think you could probably throw this handle into a vibratory tumbler with some polishing grit and take the tool marks off.

Could you have a jigsaw blade in one of the bit holders and then use the CNC as a power hacksaw instead of milling all the cutouts to chips?

Something tells me the z-axis isn't that fast, and the x/y gantry isn't strong enough either.

This looks like a good part to sand cast first and then finish mill so you're not removing so much material. I'm commenting halfway through, so if you did that, great.

Thank you for Air review. Great skills on 4axis. I'm little bit worried now because you said original Carvera is more rigid, accurate and better finishing. Can you please comment or make video where you compare how big difference is between them? I'm watchmaker, it's important to me Always thank you TAOW for you time.
@taow
@taow 3 месяца назад
Thanks! Yes to clarify those comments a bit further, the Air has unsupported 20mm rods on the x-axis where the original Carvera uses supported square linear rails, that leads to more rigidity at the tool head. This leads to better surface finish, and quieter cuts on the original Carvera. Both machines have the same ballscrews from what I can tell so the positional accuracy should be nearly identical. I do want to do a test quantifying the and comparing surface finish but have not yet done it directly, I think it should be possible to get very similar results with the air by using more conservative speeds and finishing passes.
@Asnovich
@Asnovich 3 месяца назад
@@taow Seems logical. I thought Air new cast frame will fix rigidity but seems not that close to linear rails. As always lower feed will fix it :D Can't wait for comparing Thank you for reply!
@raydavis6245
@raydavis6245 3 месяца назад
Had you considered the exact same knife handle/files in the original Carvera to do a side by side comparison? I have backed the Carvera Air, and this would be my first CNC, so surface finish to me is important, but if slowing down the feed rates can improve the finish then I am happy for the milling to take longer.

@@taow I got in on the air as backer #24, but I'm strongly considering getting the OG Carvera. You mentioned that the OG machine is not made redundant, but I'm curious, if money wasn't really an issue, would you buy the OG machine and also keep the Air when it arrived, or would you personally cancel the Air and just stick with the OG? At first I was mostly concerned with the ATC, but the more I dig deeper, it seems the rigidity is going to be the main issue.

They will never be able to sell the original at $6000 after releasing this. No one wants to pay $4000 for an ATC and a inch of more working area
@taow
@taow 3 месяца назад
The original machine also uses fully supported square rails on the x-axis so is more rigid, results in quieter cutting and better surface finish/ dimensional accuracy. But yes $4000 is still a lot more to pay when ~60% of the functionality can be achieved with this machine.
