very cool video! i would not have expected the awesome results that you got. well done experiment! one minor thing is that a laser doesn't make a plane wave, they are typically gaussian waves which look like a spherical wave when you aren't close to the aperture. i hate coyotes too lol. keep up the awesome vids!!

Cody, get a Sony A7s and use the extreme(but still usable) ISO of 409,600. You could have a must shorter shutter and measure way more light.
@matty9460

SeanHodgins I have an a7s and I wouldn't call 409,600 usable, maybe 80,000 but you're pushing it
@SeanHodgins
@SeanHodgins 7 лет назад
Usable in the sense that he would achieve much better video quality than from his Canon at whatever ISO he was using in this, but with much more light. But yeah he could lower it, and still vastly improve the amount of light he could take in with the a7s and have good quality.
@HollywoodGreenFresh

@TheRealMafoo

I think the point is, if you are using the limits of your sensor in low light to capture an image, the result on the a7s will be better then on his Canon. Sure, it will be a poor image. But a less poor image.

Cougars scare me more than wolves or bears or anything in the wilderness really. If a cougar wanted to kill you, you would most likely be mauled before you ever heard or saw it. I had one following me for almost a half mile through the woods before and never noticed it at all, and it was right behind me, like less than 50 feet. And I was hunting, trying to walk quietly and paying close attention to my surroundings. The only reason I know it was there is because there was snow on the ground and when I turned around to head back the way I came there were cougar tracks right on top of mine all over the place. Scared the crap outta me. I could just shoot some wolves or a bear, but you can't shoot a cougar if you're dead before you see it.

Light is never truly a particle, until the wave function collapses, and it then only behaves like a particle for the instant energy is transferred for an interaction. The particle behavior is emergent and is simply a definition of the way light transfers energy when interacting.

I'm not really qualified to say this, so take this with a grain of salt. However, I think it would be more accurate to say that light behaves like a wave *most of the time*, and only collapses to a particle when it's measured.

I'd love to see a follow up video where you try to make some sort of gear where you can put the theory in concept . i can imagine it to be a difficult thing to make. just saying i believe you could :) if not i'd appreciate if you let me know why not. As footer just wanted to say i enjoyed your video's so much i really like physics but the school i went to didn't had the subject available(no teacher or enough students to fill a physics class). so this way i still learn why and how things work. hope you your channel keeps growing. best of wishes, Erin. personally, it would be a big hand pushing me away if he started playing crappy techno in the background the whole video, had constant panning shots of holding something as the crappy music gets louder to fill the gap of not talking, and have clickbait video titles and thumbnails. i think one of the big reasons codys channel is growing is because people are getting sick of that from other channels. i know personally, if i hear added music playing in the background as they are talking, i just leave the video. cody has a charm to his videos that make them greater than other youtubers, and it has a home made feel just like everything he does, so please, please dont push him to change that.

@raykent3211
@raykent3211 7 лет назад
I've looked thru dozens of comments and seem to be the odd one out. Whenever you said "you can clearly see..." I couldn't. This is interesting because it seems to be the converse of a pinhole camera, which is a "wide angle lens". It's very easy to get clear fairly detailed images from that. Will you follow this up to get easily visible images from this, cos all I've seen here is a very low contrast blur which other commenters seem very impressed by and leave me thinking there must be something wrong with my eyesight?
@theCodyReeder
@theCodyReeder 7 лет назад
The "clearly see", It is not referencing the clarity of the image but rather the inscrutableness of the fact that there are 4 fuzzy dots. I guess I should have made that more clear. (bu dum tis) Making a sharp image with a set up like this would be very difficult, not impossible, but I would have to do something about the air currents or maybe get a more sensitive camera.

the problem with that is that the sensor would have to be way out in the middle of nowhere between earth's and mars' orbits
@shauhame6364
@shauhame6364 7 лет назад
that'll be possible tho. You could envision lunching a somewhat small (and cheap! ) camera, let it travel a bit and then take some piclture whenever the moon align. That might not be the best idea for a real high res telescope but i don't see why a cheapo one cound't. Tho i'm not an expert and their might be better solution for cheap space telescope design to see far away.

in fact you could even use jupiter i guess. travel time would be long tho.
@gavinoaw
@gavinoaw 7 лет назад
I also thought of using Mars or Jupiter, but I think the atmosphere of those bodies would distort the light way too much. Remember, the edges of the circle need to be as smooth as possible, so I think having atmosphere at the edges would make it pretty much unusable. I might be wrong though, in which case someone should definitely do that! :)

As a electroptics student i must say this is simply the most impressive demonstration of light diffraction I've ever seen!No hard Maths involved, just plain old physics!

I'll try my odds with a coyote than a cougar any day of the week. I had the privilege of being chased by a cougar about 8 years ago while I was at work on night in the TX panhandle
@mitch3064
@mitch3064 5 лет назад
Guess it depends on where you are. Out where I live, the Cougars and other cats stay away from humans, but the coyotes will come right up to you and try to find some food. Buddy of mine was walking from the parking lot swinging his fast food bag of lunch when a coyote ran up and grabbed it from him. Didnt attack him but they are not afraid of humans so more chance of problems.

Mark Rainey marxists reject religion but still run around citing a madman's ravings as gospel and treating his writing as the holy book.
@Mark-dc1su
@Mark-dc1su 7 лет назад
migkillerphantom marx's analysis of Capitalism was a materialist analysis. Just because something is correct, and someone has convictions, doesn't make it wrong. If you want to expand that logic to all scientific thinkers, then you should in order to maintain your own consistency. Otherwise, we should understand that a scientific analysis isn't rooted in idealism or other mythical religious concepts but in observations of reality.

AnatoleH1 Eisenhower dollars, Susan B Anthony dollars, Sacagawea dollars, and presidential dollar coins are all still common and in current circulation- just ask your local bank and trade for a few. Old Morgan and Liberty silver dollars aren't found anymore except in the hands of collectors.

Okay, so usually Cody's videos are about things I know at least something about and already kiiind of understand, but I really like to see applied practically. (Either that, or I cringe and hope he doesn't lose a finger, or worse). This was completely new to me and, other than the double slit experiment, even the basic theory is something I've never even read about. I love that. Thanks Cody. (Also, thanks for not endangering any digits in the making of this video).
