We go on a journey to look at the ASUS Pro B660M-C D4-CSM motherboard designed for corporate desktop PCs. We take a look at the hardware, then turn it into a cool system with over 100TB of storage and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 12GB GPU, and 128GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i5 Alder Lake CPU. We also talk about the differences between today's CSM motherboards and the ones we reviewed from ASUS in 2013 in an earlier era of STH.

That's a very old school approach to OEM parts, kinda looks like an alien in a world where OEMs like Dell/HP/Lenovo make 100% custom and non-interchangeable motherboards and power supplies even in tower PCs

I love the Idea of making a Machine that looks OEM on steroids. I wish it offered a subtle heatsink for the VRM. I would also love to find a raw/OEM looking graphics card to match. Would be willing to make it on the AM4/B550 platform as well.

@Jeymez

@@RyTrapp0 well each manufacturer does a lower priced version of the 4 main board series low H, intermediate B, midrange H, and finally Z which is the only board on Intel you can overclock, that might not have as much rgb and other goodies as the top board, but unfortunately not having rgb isn't the thing they remove. often times they strip out other things like fewer ports, people to this day still use a mouse and keyboard combo, but some boards eliminate that. now i can do without wifi, but if someone doesn't want rgb and a extra bling but you want a few more ports, unfortunately you have to pay more to get more. now i don't necessarily need a green board, but i do like a simple layout. i think if you want rgb and extra bling, that should be a separate board for people that want one, but they don't do it that way.

I‘m using an ASUS B460M-C CSM Motherboard. I‘m using it mostly for gaming. But I love it. Because it has a LPT port. And RS232 ports. And it has no RGB which is a huge benefit. And it‘s green. My next mobo will definitely also be a CSM motherboard.

Honestly, haven't built a computer in 20 years so wouldn't know this kind of thing still existed outside of the big vendors. It's nice to see this sort of thing and to have it reviewed. The next time, in another 20 years I need to build a PC, if we are still using them, I'll remember this video and look them up! :)

It's nice to see products like this being reviewed, this could be the same price as a gaming board and some of my clients would still say better value for money - they don't need the RGB ect ect, long term function with minimal downtime is the value they are after.

I'd say they are perfect for 24x7 systems for home user. I have 7th generation Intel version which is rock solid still to this day. Works fine as NAS and media server. This was also the only MB back then that worked fine with older PCIe gen 1 card i have. Gaming mobos were refusing to identify it.
@Jeymez

i don't know why but i prefer a simple barebones motherboard like this, that's how they all looked back in the day. i had a board like that in my 99 PC with Windows 98, the first PC i got for my 11th birthday. i had an AMD build later on in 2003 with a Athlon 64, and the motherboard was green as well. manufacturers after awhile started designing boards a little differently by 2008, even then they still had a simple look about them. 2010 is where they started adding bling and rgb lighting.

That's a really nice little motherboard, the one complaint I have about it would be the lack of a second x16 physical port for adding a 4 port nic etc. I built my home server into the Fractal 804, and it is a fantastic case, the highlight for me, besides all the space for storage was the cap thing for installing the motherboard standoffs, that was quality of life I never knew I needed until I used it.

This ASUS mobo is perfect as it is - no need for wifi (if you need it you can add it), no need for more fan headers. This is micro ATX, so will end up in SFF boxes which hardly have one intake fan at the front, and if you are lucky there may be another exhaust one but this is it. I have built recently rigs with i7 12700k (for work and gaming) and i5 12600 for our business. You appreciate these CSM solutions, once of gimmick such as 2.5Gbit NIC such as I225V starts to cause you problems. I spent 2 hours trouble shooting why my PC would not wake up at specific time, even though everything was set up correctly in BIOS/UEFI. And then further trouble shoot I225-V to learn it has some bad habits. You can live with some hiccops on your gaming rig but last thing you want issues with your business solution. So after playing and testing Gigabyte B660I Aorus Pro DDR4 I can definately say that this ASUS mobo seems like a dream for a business. Still need to test it. Just one question - my TFX has only single 12V x4, whereas this one I can see is 12V 2x4 - can you test it with a single 12V x4 plug? Thanks

I ended up picking up the B365m C/CSM version awhile ago with an i5-9400 and have been looking to rehome it in a new chassis vs the very corporate case I was forced to purchase. It seems they added some neat features in the few generations, but it's a shame they don't have additional fan headers. It's a bit of a shame you lose out on some things while the cost of the motherboard is higher than similarly spec'ed models. Even another x16 slot wired in x4 would have been nice to have for 10GbE when the primary slot could be occupied by a GPU.

On the point about WiFi, there's probably many corporate markets where they specifically cannot buy a device with WiFi because of security considerations. In a laptop that's accepted, but for a desktop or industrial machine they might want security isolation.

Interesting. I've got a B550 based CSM (Pro B550M-C/CSM) board and it's also pretty interesting. It has Thunderbolt support via an add on card that connects to an header on the board. Saved me the trouble of buying an Intel based board and CPU just to get Thunderbolt, when I had a spare Ryzen on hand. I plan to use the system for media ingest & export, probably adding a small RAID array of 1TB SSDs. A little surprised the B660 version doesn't support Thunderbolt at all, but for a standardized office build it wouldn't likely need it in most use cases. I like the clean layout and having the option of legacy connectors is nice to have, and it wasn't that expensive either.

A great thing of latest itx gaming motherboards is that they have so many heat sinks, an integrated back panel, a thick Aluminum back plate, RAM also shielded with its own heat sinks, and other taugh stuff that you don't really need a case to protect it. I have just bought a Z690i + low profile cooler, a GPU, some itx backets and a PSU, and I have wrapped around all the excess cables to protect the few unprotected components. As it has no case it fits in my old 17" laptop bag, and everything is very accesible as a test bench. PC cases create a cooling problem that doesn't exist in an open frame, and that makes mini PCs much bigger and more expensive than they should. In Elon style, best case is no case!

Just did this with a WiFi card on an mATX B450 board. Took a few purchases to get the exact right riser, but found the perfect one with a 90° and a reverse 90°, plugged it in, and everything has worked great. Only downside is that I lost an intake fan(InWin 303) because the WiFi card hangs JUST too low, but I may replace it with a low profile fan(hasn't been an issue though). Really clean look with the mATX board though, no excess board hanging off the bottom. That said, it'll be nice to have on board WiFi with my next motherboard though lol.

refurbs with gpu, fast net, nvme - the perfect qemu node - the intel cpu fan mounting used to be good - it got worse. this is a great concept and a cue to builders - nvme scales which means cluster can get fast - more iops - smb needs cheap easy scale - first just spin up vms and then build out more nodes #use the index luke
@Lishtenbird
@Lishtenbird 2 года назад
16:00 When I saw the mATX board, I thought - if they're adding both a GPU and storage, they'll get kinda bottlenecked on PCIe bandwidth. Interestingly, this specific 6-port SATA card exists in both x1 and x4 variants, but for a motherboard like that, you won't be able to also use the x4 variant. Practically, sure, only a pretty specific task will bottleneck on like 4 drives simultaneously at the 1x limit of 1GB/s (and that ASM controller might overheat before that), but still a thing to consider if you'll be building something with NAS properties on a business board.

@@wsv8818 Are there actually boards that put a M.2 where a PCI-e would be though? I've only seen them fit M.2s in the space in between. My favorite layout is the one where the M.2 is on the back of the MB, that space is even more free real estate.

@@wsv8818 Oh I see what you mean. I forgot about the existence of 1-slot cards lol. Honestly from my perspective PCIe's most important job is to connect to a graphics card, and most of them are 2-slot these days so a M.2 fits right in between two of them. In addition to that I am probably biased because I am loathe to put additional PCIe cards immediately below my GPU due to it blocking the GPU intake airflow. So I prefer my M.2s either on the MB or have a PCIe above the GPU slot. This is further complicated by the fact that usually the fastest PCIe slot is the first one. The ones below it are older gen or less lanes. So I often end up choosing M.2 lanes on the MB because it's easier to find these than to find a board that has the GPU slot lower than usual and a PCIe for expansion above it. So you can see why MB manufacturers do this, I guess many people have the same set of preferences as I do. It's totally fair for you to want the choice of having your 7x 1-slots though.

For all that cost cutting, this mobo seems like it's 100$ too expenisve, it's super bare-bones.

I really want to get a 12600k, a ddr4 motherboard and a DDR5 motherboard. I've got some CHEAP as dirt DDR4 RAM that just overclocks like crazy on my 5700G, ALMOST 5000(4933MT/s) CL17-17-17-28. For samsung B dye at less than $100 at 16GB is a crazy deal. I'd like to see if this ram at stock (4400CL19-19-19-39) and overclocked, would be faster than DDR5. On my 5700G with 1:1:1 timings it is scoring over 73GB/s. For 2 sticks of single rank memory thats pretty darn good, and on par with other people's DDR5 5400CL38 which i believe is dual rank

I would like to highlight that ASUS is one of the companies that gets an F rating for flouting russian sactions according to Jeffrey Sonnenfeld from Yale. It might be nice to flog some gear by companies that don't intentionally provide Russia technological support.

The background music is very obnoxious, probably because of the screechy sax. I couldn't concentrate on the narration, it was so distracting :(
