Making an equestrian corseted waistcoat

I have developed the waistcoats to help me ride - as a regular costochondritis sufferer, sports bras for longer periods of time are not an issue - or any other bras than a soft bralette really.. :-( ) due to a painful pressure. The pain however was almost completely gone when I was wearing Victorian corsets - and the bout would pass quicker too, within weeks as opposed to months. As an equestrian with an ample bosom i do requite quite a lot to support the boobage while riding - and so I decided on a concept of merging our Victorian riding corset design with a more modern waistcoat.
The waistcoat worked very well - supported bits needing support, reduced bouncing bosom, and helped with long hours in the saddle - particulary sidesaddle. It has been our bestseller ever since...
This video shows how they are made - using classic corsetry techniques combined with modern solutions ( elastic, zip etc).
you can see more about them on my website!

I need to say that from a health and safety point of view. This needs an award. So, so, so helpful. All those women out there avoiding pain now. Well done.

I've never met anyone else who's suffered from costochondritis! I stay semi inactive for the most part, so I rarely get flair ups, but this has certainly made me want to finish making my corset much sooner. I hadn't thought about it being more comfortable than bras, but I certainly do get some pain with them.

I dont ride, but my bust is a 36G and finding sports bras that dont make me feel like I'm suffocating or breaking my back are hard to find. This might be a solution, and I'd love to use it while I go hiking with friends! Gonna have to go to that website...

I am immediately reminded of Richard III, his deformity and his harness helping him (or at least someone with the same condition who was guineapigged into trying it out): maybe it would be a good idea to look for more helping garments from the past!

This is a dream come true! I am a bra size 34G and once they said I was H! I can never find bras that fit right, the cups are too small or the band is too loose. I must have at least a few of these marvelous wonders!!
@mellymonster413
@mellymonster413 6 лет назад
Gosh I thought just the same thing! My bust is around an au size 22HH though most bras I've found are far too wide set for me and definitely too small in the cups, finding a regular bra to fit has been tedious and awful let alone something I can actually do activity in! So seeing someone succeed and in an ingenious sort of stays no less? It honestly just gives me so much hope~

Outstanding way to take care of yourself!!! I just Googled costochondritis and holy crap! Talk about incurable chronic-pain! All of these disorders get the same treatment by Doctors and the passive "patient" (makes ya wonder why we're called "patients"!) will only go down the pain-drain into complete non-functionality. Doctors can't experiment. Irony of all ironies, it's considered "unethical". But we can! And we must if we're going to gain any ground over these problems! Thank you for sharing your whole experience here! very generous! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

no problem - I have just recovered from the 3rd bout - and since i knew what it was and how to act, it took a week of corset wearing and a month later I am back to training. the previous bouts took 6 months! still a pain and a nuisance, but i can now deal with it:-)

I start the video out of interest and within seconds a text apprears possibly solving my problems OMG !!! I just cannot wear bras anymore, even the best brasiers make me nauseous, but giving my bust size I also cannot ride without support (even going on a little walk is uncomfortable at best) so I have to suffer, with the least uncomfortable/supportive sports bra I could find, if I want to ride. Now, hopefully, I just need to figure out how to make them.

I so need a dozen of these in many colors! I too am a girl with a larger bust who rides! I happen to like to chase cans and bend poles and I can honestly say theirs nothing in this world that’s more annoying than having the girls pop out of a bra in the middle of a run! I may have to give sewing one of these a go!

My mother was not the most patient teacher of her sewing skills. I taught myself on a treadle machine and started again in my late 20s. My goal is clothes that tailor fit my body--the time shopping is pretty much equal to prepping and sewing.

This looks really nice! I'm more flat chested (thankfully), so most of the time I rode with a normal bra, didn't even have to use a sports bra. But I totally would wear it, because it looks so beautiful. I could imagine it improves your posture while riding aus well. (I tend to slump over). Is there an easy way to clean it? I suppose the stiff parts won't do well in a washing machine...
@priorattire
@priorattire 7 лет назад
the workout ones are boned with synthetic whalebone and hand washable. the wool ones are dry clean - we do offer service on them when lower binding is replaced, damaged bones are replaced snd the waistcoat is washed by hand :-) but yes, no machine...

@rebeccabegnaud7017 7 лет назад
Do you/Will you ever sell the pattern for this? I'm in the USA and would love to be able to have a custom fit one, but obviously I can't make it to you guys for a fitting. Or do you have any tips for adjusting a normal waistcoat pattern to fit in the boning?
@priorattire
@priorattire 7 лет назад
not for forseable future. you can buy them of the peg from the website ( stock renewed regularly) or order made to measure ( available shortly). and we do ship abroad putting bones in a modern wasitcoat wont work - it is the cut that is important, as well as suitable corsetry fabrics. boning is there just to support the shape...

Would a corset help against lower back pain by riding
@priorattire
@priorattire 7 лет назад
depends on a lot of the what kind of pain, where, the cause etc - i strongly suggest getting a professional medical advice that would be pertinent to your back issue. In some cases it helps, in some cases however it can exacerbate an underlying problem, so better to check it our

What machine are you using in this video? Is it a Janome?
@Charlet96
@Charlet96 6 лет назад
She is using Janome machines, however Janome doesn't make their straight stitch machine any more. That's what she does most of her sewing on in the video. Juki makes a very nice straight stitch machine that works just the same. I believe the current model is TL-2010Q.
