I received an order for an IWB1 (inside the waistband) style leather holster and gun belt for the Sig P365 with the Crimson Trace LG-422 Laserguard attached, and the customer asked if I could film the process and post it to RU-vid. So, here ya' go! The entire build took roughly 4-5 hours, spread over several days.
► Snap Hardware:
T-Nut: 6-32 1/4" Barrel - I buy these from two different sources. I get 1/2" flange from McMaster, or 9/16" flange Black Oxide from Index Fasteners.
Snaps: Pull-the-DOT - I use the Cap, Socket and Stud, and I order them direct from DOT Fasteners
Leather Washer: I make them myself out of 8 ounce vegetable tanned leather, dyed black and dipped in sealer.

► LEATHER SUPPLIERS
Wickett & Craig - I typically order their "Tooling/Holster/Carving" vegetable tanned leather. I purchase their "Standard" grade, and I request that they split it down from a thicker hide so the back is as clean as possible. I normally order 7-8 ounce for holsters, 3-4 ounce if I'm lining a holster (I build the whole thing out of 3-4 ounce), and either 3-4 or 4-5 ounce for wallets, journal covers, etc... They will allow you to purchase individual hides
Herman Oak - While I love the leather I've gotten from Wickett & Craig, I prefer the warmer coloring of natural Herman Oak. Unfortunately, H.O. requires you to buy leather in bulk from the tannery, and buying from distributors can be hit & miss. Springfield Leather sells "Herman Oak Premium Belt Bend", so I’ve been using this lately.
The Leather Guy - I don't have a lot of experience with this leather, but the "Artisan's Choice" leather I've used has been very nice. The coloration is similar to Wickett & Craig. The thing I really like about The Leather Guy's website is that nearly every single hide shown on their site is a listing for the actual hide you'll be buying, complete with photos and a description of blemishes for that particular hide. Very cool that they do that!
District Leather - I've never personally ordered from them, but I've heard good things about their leather.
Acadia Leather - I've never purchased from here either, but I've also heard good things about their leather.
Horween Leather - At the risk of sounding repetitive, here's another I've never ordered from, but their leather is very well known.
Weaver Leathercraft - Most of what I order from weaver is buckles and tools, but they also sell leather.

I own one of Eric's fine creations for my S&W Shield. It is awesome! I liked it so much, I have one for my Glock 43 on his waiting list. You hear all the internet tactical guys downing leather due to its propensity for caving it on itself. True or not, Eric's holster will give you no such problem. His holsters click in with the authority of a kydex and still give you the comfort of leather. I have worn this thing through two summers of northern California triple digit heat with all the sweat that does bring. As well as through the humidity and heat that comes with my new home of Central Kentucky. It still looks like brand new except it is finely molded to my body. This is exceptional craftsmanship, built by someone who truly cares. I vote with my dollars. Which makes Adams my choice. Cant recommend him highly enough. I can't wait until my new one gets built. I'm wearing it in a kydex currently. Another beautiful creation Eric! Congrats to the new owner! I know you will be ecstatic!

Good video and explanations. Some crafters say the rougher side of leather, inside of holster, scratches the gun over time. (Your thoughts please.) Also, this brings up linging the holster. Do you line your holsters if requested? What lining material and weight do you use? How is lining attached to holster? Thanks for the help.

Why not rub the dyes on instead of spraying like every other leather worker video I have watched? Sure would cut down on the amount of pollution you send out your window
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 3 года назад
I use a dauber every now and then, but I get much more consistent results by spraying. I know a lot of professional makers that dip their products in dye (another alternative). The main reason I spray is because most of my customers request airbrushed accents around the edges, which is much more difficult to achieve by any other method. I actually find the fumes to be worse when using dauber or dipping methods because both of those methods consume a lot more dye during the application process. I might be wrong (probably am), but larger amounts of product being used equals larger amounts of harmful off-gassing during the evaporation and drying process.

Eric. Round knives really scare me. How long did it take you to get proficient with one? Is it worth learning the round knife? Now I just use an Olfa locking snap off utility blade. PS: Thanks for these videos. I made one holster based on another of your videos and need more practice. (the holster fits my little Walther PPK BB gun but my belt clip position is all messed up). Plus, I hand sew my leather. No machine.
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 3 года назад
Hi Bruce - I've been using a round knife pretty much since I first started playing with leather roughly 11 years ago. I found it was much easer to cut with and was much less tiring on the hands compared to something like an x-acto knife. Rotary blades are great, in straight lines, but round knives are pretty easy to cut straight lines too if you rock the blade forward. The only downside to round knives is really tight curves, but I use mine to cut all the way down to around 3/8" radius curves. I would definitely recommend trying one, but make sure you get one with high quality steel and keep it sharp with a high polish.
@bbrachman
@bbrachman 3 года назад
@@AdamsLeatherWorks Any brand of knife you recommend? I know all the US leather tool sellers and manufacturers. Weaver, Springfield Leather, Rocky Mountain. The biggies. Osborne and others.
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 3 года назад
I only have experience with the Weaver Master Tools knife that I own. I believe mine is an older version of the 4-7/8" that's currently listed at $96... Their price has gone up considerably - I think it's about $30 more than I seem to remember paying for it. If you like things a little more on the fancy side, check out Leather Wranglers. His are super fancy and from what I hear, very high quality. He also has a great sharpening vid floating around out there.

@nedsurf1876
@nedsurf1876 4 года назад
@@AdamsLeatherWorks I also use nylon thread, the thickest that is feasible for the application. Waxed button thread works well, is quite thicker than tiger thread and readily available. I don't know why but also don't like those staples.

It will cut into the mat, but just don’t press too hard. The mats are intended for rotary cutters, but if you don’t press too hard, it won’t dig in that deep. It’ll snap off the top of x-acto blades going around curves. Watch out for that.
