This video demonstrates my process of making an IWB (Inside the Waistband) style leather holster for a 3 inch 1911 .45 ACP.
I start off by making the pattern, including how I dissect the pattern into individual pattern pieces. Then I demonstrate the entire assembly process, from cutting out the leather, to burnishing, sewing, forming, and final finishing.
► Snap Hardware:
T-Nut: 6-32 1/4" Barrel - I buy these from two different sources. I get 1/2" flange from McMaster, or 9/16" flange Black Oxide from Index Fasteners.
Snaps: Pull-the-DOT - I use the Cap, Socket and Stud, and I order them direct from DOT Fasteners
Leather Washer: I make them myself out of 8 ounce vegetable tanned leather, dyed black and dipped in sealer.

► LEATHER SUPPLIERS
Wickett & Craig - I typically order their "Tooling/Holster/Carving" vegetable tanned leather. I purchase their "Standard" grade, and I request that they split it down from a thicker hide so the back is as clean as possible. I normally order 7-8 ounce for holsters, 3-4 ounce if I'm lining a holster (I build the whole thing out of 3-4 ounce), and either 3-4 or 4-5 ounce for wallets, journal covers, etc... They will allow you to purchase individual hides
Herman Oak - While I love the leather I've gotten from Wickett & Craig, I prefer the warmer coloring of natural Herman Oak. Unfortunately, H.O. requires you to buy leather in bulk from the tannery, and buying from distributors can be hit & miss. Springfield Leather sells "Herman Oak Premium Belt Bend", so I’ve been using this lately.
The Leather Guy - I don't have a lot of experience with this leather, but the "Artisan's Choice" leather I've used has been very nice. The coloration is similar to Wickett & Craig. The thing I really like about The Leather Guy's website is that nearly every single hide shown on their site is a listing for the actual hide you'll be buying, complete with photos and a description of blemishes for that particular hide. Very cool that they do that!
District Leather - I've never personally ordered from them, but I've heard good things about their leather.
Acadia Leather - I've never purchased from here either, but I've also heard good things about their leather.
Horween Leather - At the risk of sounding repetitive, here's another I've never ordered from, but their leather is very well known.
Weaver Leathercraft - Most of what I order from weaver is buckles and tools, but they also sell leather.

Thanks for watching! For better or worse, I went out on a limb and actually narrated this one!! I'm not sure I've ever posted a video that didn't have some sort of glitch (battery dies, camera settings wrong, forget a step in the build process (you know, the reason you're actually watching the video!!). Regardless, I hope my videos show you that even though you might make mistakes along the way, you can normally keep moving forward and come up with a workable final product. If you enjoyed this video, I'd love it if you'd Like & Subscribe - it really helps a lot! If you hated the video, I'd really like to know why - I truly try to please everyone and take everyone's (constructive) comments & criticisms to heart and will constantly try to improve my skills & techniques moving forward. Take care, Eric.

Narration was amazing: I learned so much more with it. Great work as always

I much prefer the narration, mostly because having to read subtitles or look at writing on the leather is a little distracting from what's going on in the video. Pausing/rewinding/scrubbing to read isn't an insurmountable problem or dealbreaker, it's just easier not to have to read while watching. Thanks for the video and feedback/criticism request, I love your videos!

Nicely done Adam. I have been an amateur and even semi-pro leatherworker for a couple decades now, but I have not done any leather work in several years now and am about to undertake making a custom hollster for my 1911, so I figured I would start scoping out ideas and tips-n-tricks... I think your video will prove helpful :) Production quality on the video was excellent. a how-to video should not be overly fancy like some of the videos out there I have watched, and sound quality for your voice over was about perfect.

Turned out awesome! I've been contesting adding holsters to my upholstery shop as little bonuses for slow times. These things are beautiful, and made me really want to incorporate one into a bike seat or something. Great video!

This is one of the best instructional videos in general that I've seen on YT, hands down. Your command of language and verbal skill in describing each step and decision points is excellent. Thank you for taking the time to document these steps and knowledge that can be applied to any leather product, and for many hobbies for that matter.

Thank you so much. This, and the 1911 double mag holster have answered questions I've had for the 2+ years I've been doing leatherwork. Double-stack mags have given me fits, but I believe you've solved my problems.
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching and glad the videos have been helpful. Take the measurements, then build a quick mock-up to see how much curve you get in the top edge of your pouch, then work the opposite of that curve into your pouch design. Your double-stack mag pockets may need to be slightly pie-shaped as well, tapering inward towards the bullet end of the pocket.

When I was learning this skill as a kid and then in my mid ‘20s we would use an antler from a deer to finish the edges before we put edge finisher on. Edge finisher was a thick substance typically a dark brown. I have not worked in leather in many many years. It was a skill I learned in high school. Ricky from IBM
