Updates: 1. Chris confirmed that he was on the Lotus account in their discord server, people pointed that he was not supposed to be but eventually just accepted it as 'okay well whatever'. Lotus customers are on a completely different level 2. He says I'm wrong about the delays because I'm no business owner 3. Honestly, just see this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--ZW_1fQzxs8.html NOTES AND FAQ HERE, EXPAND PLS Since I've pointed out some of the dumb mistakes Chris has done, it's likely that the lotus3k can be fixed if they actually paid attention (nevermind, they don't even wanna watch this video). So if the 3k suddenly is announced to be working, you know I helped them with that ;) Also if you're a customer who can't get a refund, honestly your best bet at this point is to try your luck calling your bank and asking them to forcibly reverse the transaction. Q: What song did you use at X? Intro: Laur - Viyella's Nightmare Gameplay: HiTECH NINJA - Modelista Second half: Akira Complex - Ether Strike ('Divine Mercy' Extended) Q: How much did this cost? Way too much, really not a project I'd recommend anyone on a budget at all. It was over $200+ for 5 of these (though I can only make 4, I only bought 4 MCUs). Low quantity units are expensive, and I had to buy the minimum amount for each component. I have 100 resistors and 1000 screws, I don't know what to do with them omg Other more technical jargon: I'm still very new to all of this. I wouldn't be surprised if my PCB design sucks still, but I'll keep learning in the future. Next time I wanna make a mini-IIDX con! Being open to learning is really important when it comes to making your own things (but honestly this is daunting as hell because you're basically learning stuff engineer students are being taught in school yourself) If you guys would like to make your own keypads but have no experience with any of these, I HIGHLY recommend buying a breadboard, parts and an arduino micro to start out. Jumping right into PCB designing is actually not a good idea, I did it anyway since qmk is an easy cop out for custom keyboards if you follow their guide and only plan to do that. I should have done this on a breadboard first and etc etc etc because later on when I tried learning some AVR programming, it was quite the nightmare to troubleshoot since... well, the PCB is already made, it doesn't have ICSP pins either. Though I do have a skeleton and extremely basic firmware written outside of qmk with the generous help of Thomazzz3, Xeal, lame and mon! Thank you guys so much for being patient with me. It's not mentioned anywhere in the video but wow, this is really fun and I want to try making more things than just 3 keys on a PCB.

This video is great! It goes into the basics of product design, points out issues that may come up when designing something like this, and shows clearly that something as simple as a keypad is possible even for a novice to design (I mean it's simple enough that it would make for a good project for an introduction class on electrical engineering.) I know that you're probably not interested in selling this, but I'd be willing to bet if you were to make and sell them in batches you could probably make decent money doing so. So, I have been both playing osu! for a while (4 years) and been doing electronics as a hobby for a long while (12+ years, not too sure since I started as a kid) and I've been watching from the sidelines as Lotus (mainly just Chris) has basically dug their own grave, hopped in, and dug their own grave again, every time they post an update. Seeing the video that undefined posted was just, from my perspective, so bad. It hurt to know that people were paying for something that, as you've proven, is not hard to make, and there's already enough resources out there, for FREE, to help anyone to make keypads successfully. It's almost like Lotus just wanted to make a rug-pull for money after they get fame! Anyways, enough about Lotus, now about my thoughts of your keypad! 1. The PCB layout and routing is really good and looks basically professional! I was honestly impressed with that alone while I was watching. 2. Your soldering was alright, but you likely weren't using the right solder and flux. If you are going to manufacture keypads in any quantity, get a stencil, solder paste, and a hot air station for SMD parts, and solder the bigger parts by hand with plenty of flux and good solder. You should always have smooth solder blobs, and if it isn't smooth, something's not right. 3. Not really a thought about your keypad, but if AutoCAD is giving you issues, exporting or money wise, there are plenty of free CAD alternatives like FreeCAD, OpenSCAD, etc. 4. How you change colors on your keypad is almost perfect, I was blown away to see that you used hue and saturation instead of preset colors like most things I've seen use. Adding a value control for the brightness (the V in HSV) would make it absolutely perfect, though. That's all of my thoughts in places where I feel like I can comment, since I know nothing about acrylic manufacturing. Over all, you did a pretty good job! If you did sell these, I'd definitely buy one, especially knowing that I'll be supporting you and that it was also fueled from spite against Lotus lmao
@tokaku
@tokaku 2 года назад
1. Aw, thank you! I think they could be better imo, I still have space to improve. But I'm glad they were presentable at the very least LOL 2. Ah, I didn't want to go with a stencil, hot air gun and solder paste since I would putting even more money into equipment for this. Maybe in the future if I do a lot of prototyping like this! Kinda wish my soldering iron was using a flat tip instead of pointed *sigh* 3. God thank you, I was gonna go get coreldraw instead of anything free 4. Ah, I take no credit for that, the ease of changing hue and saturation is because of qmk. From ground up, firmware writing would be a lot more impressive. There's actually a brightness setting but it wasn't shown in the video omg

Honestly, I can relate to the motivation xD I wanted to get into custom keyboards a bit over a year ago and was honestly terrified of spending +$100 on something I might not even like, so I took a risk and made my own from scratch, i.e. an arduino, key switches salvaged from an e-waste board (I got 105 cheap-but-okay cherryMX clones for $15, that's not terrible), and handwired… it's not pretty, but the materials were less than $30 and it was honestly far less complicated than I feared. I'm thinking of getting a real PCB for my next real attempt, but just as a starting point I'd say if anybody out there wants to give it a try, it's really not rocket science, I mean if I can do it then it can't be impossible xD Then again, looking at Lotus… 😬 Point is, I think it's cool that you're showing off that keyboard design isn't, like, a holy grail that only a select few can achieve, and while it may feel even more crappy now knowing how (comparatively) simple the process _can_ be and Lotus _still_ managed to fuck it up, maybe a few dissatisfied "customers" can take solace in the fact that they can just go and make their Osu-pad themselves.

small point, at 11:20, the box in your house's wiring uses breakers, not fuses. breakers simply break the circuit when they trip, whereas fuses are one-use only and burn through when they trip. probably not the best option for overcurrent protection because you'd have to open up the board and replace the fuse every time the current rating is exceeded
@tokaku
@tokaku 2 года назад
yeah, they're not the same, but I used the analogy because it's closest in function to something a layman could understand. Although for the PCBs I believe keyboards use polyfuses and not regular fuses so replacement is not necessary :)

also if traces are cut off you use the board as a prototype, look into how your traces are layed out and then solder a jumper wire between the start and end of the bad trace. You could post a picture of that working and tell your customers the next batch is on the way. Also ALWAYS PROTOTYPE.

I'm just leaving a comment because I have no idea how I got here. I have never heard of OSU in my life or lotus or 3k keypad, but YT algorithm amr? I was highly entertained by your content and I am now fully invested in this hahahaha. Awesome stuff and good on you for going forward and learning new stuff this way. Brava.

have to say, your keypad looks better. but seriously how can lotus fuck about like this? i make my own 3d printed boards and handwire my keys for fun, its not hard, how can they justify spending months on a simple 3 key board, I just finished handwiring a 24 key gaming pad, took me about a month to design and print, and most of that was designing the ergo for it

It's because they had no desire to make a working product in the first place. It's just another get rich quick crowd fund scam. Also big ups for hand wiring!

Got into this vidoe by algorithm, but let me say two things: 1.) Your custom build is freaking amazing and I don't play Otsu! But i would love to try to the other music type rhythm games And 2.) that line on the first intro, your motto fucking amazing! And i never heard this company Lotus but I'm glad that I'm not gonna buy their products if they keep treating their customers a shitty way. Good video and keep up the good work.

been in tech / working in tech for 20 years considering everything on the PCB to be pure magic. Thanks for blowing my mind on the accessibility of PCB design software & learning materials. Can't tell what I'm gonna make, but definitely looking forward to messing it up -- 5 parts minimum means 4 to blow up for free!

I don't play Osu!, I've never heard of this Chris guy or the companies he's been a part of, but as an Electronic Engineering Technologist that has made circuits of my own in the past, that guy should never claim to be an engineer. I doubt he even knows what the components do, let alone how they work. You did an amazing job for this being your first project (even if you did use a ruler app to measure your distances, lol). This Chris guy should never be given money by anyone ever, but I feel like you could totally sell your product (after fixing the LED issue, of course).

Oh boy an IEEE researcher in the wild! Quick question, do you have to still pay membership (and society) dues + access to the articles if you're a researcher? It's something I've always wondered, but never found out. Since apparently the IEEE charge a hefty price to get published with them already, so I wonder just how much you get back for it.
@bodecareca

@@Snakke40 yup, you still need to pay the membership, about 40-50 USD per year if I'm not mistaken, but it's cheaper for students

I legitimately love this video. I'm not that into osu! if I'm being honest, but I'm saving this video for later for sure, because part of me wants to mess around later and see about making my own stream deck sort of thing using something like this. And seeing the whole thing about there being a minimum order of 5 just made me think that if I can ever get around to this, and have the cash to burn, I could make extras and either just have backups, or the more likely option, make custom ones for each of my friends.
