Your videos remind me of chemistry at school 35 years ago, before 'health and safety" sucked the fun out of it... Never forget when my teacher "reconstructed" the Hindenberg disaster by filling a condom with hydrogen for one demonstration 😂

Yeah, i recommend getting a small oxy/acetylene torch for making ampules. The cost is fairly high compared to how much work they can actually do because the gas runs out very quick.
@TheFlacker99
@TheFlacker99 Год назад
If he got a MAPP gas or a powerful propane torch with a focused burner he could (potentially) do it for less.
@experimental_chemistry

On using melting glass ampoules instead of borosilicate test tubes a normal blow torch would be sufficient.

Iirc copper (II) ions react with Iodide in redox that gives off copper (I) iodide and free iodine in 2:1 ratio. It would mean using more iodide salt but one might be able to just skip that reduction by sulfite. Though, it's probably just a question of if you want to deal with some sulfut dioxide smell or iodine vapours. Might be an insteresting way to make some iodine crystals though.

CuI is the only completely air-stable Cu(I)-halogenide. CuI2 doesn't exist. If CuI becomes brownish then because of remaining KI impurities oxidized to iodine. You should have prepared the acidified sulfite solution at last. It fastly loses a lot of its SO2 content and therefore part of its reducing potential on longer standing. I would recomment mixing stoichiometric amounts of CuSO4, KI, sodium thiosulfate and sulfuric acidic (15 % is sufficient) instead. This works very well, which can be recognized by a perfectly white precipitate of CuI (the brownish color of the mixture is an indication for a not completely reduced excess of iodine).

As a fluorescent mineral collector, that aside about not wanting to spend a fortune on a filtered UV light hit close to home lmao I will note that glass is a very good UV filter, which will mute some of any fluorescent response!
