I recently made this but with glacial acetic acid instead of acetyl chloride. Your method seems way better since it avoids the equilibrium issue but I don't have the nerve to work with acetyl chloride or anhydride! Seems like you still get a good enough yield with GAA if using a strong acid catalyst. Cool to see your method though!
Glacial acetic acid + conc. sulfuric acid catalyst is a good method to acetylate many alcohols or amines. Just that it takes much longer than using the chloride or anhydride, and it requires heat.
What will be the formula if acetic acid is used? no burette, do I need a burette if I use acetic acid? If the burette is mandatory, what should be my alternative?
It is indeed! I decided to go for the route in the video though because the boiling point of this compound is really high and I didn’t want to distill. Also this Route is quicker. But if you don’t have access to acetyl chloride the basic ester reaction will be the way to go.
